Over the last 11 years, the label has grown bigger than ever, hosting an impressive roster of international talents like Polar/K, Calyx, Future Prophecies, DJ Abstract, Angel Zero and more.
Having originally broken through on the legendary Rugged Vinyl label in early 1997, the space age sound mechanics of Teebee - Torgeir Byrnes - tore through a plethora of drum & bass luminaries including Juice, Audio Couture and Creative Source before finally settling at Paul Arnold’s Certificate 18 imprint for his debut solo album ‘Black Science Labs.’
In early 2001, Teebee established the Subtitles label with fellow Norwegian Kjetil Saagstad. Coming complete with solemn graphics and unusual track titles, the basslines of the Teebee produced debut ‘Gathering’ drifted like smoke thrown up from a swirling percussive dervish with heavily reverbed key sequences underpinning Photek-like beat touches.
The label has continued to outmaneuver its contemporaries, Byrnes focusing towards the floor as Saagstad provided the abstraction. Though his second album for Certificate 18, ‘Through The Eye Of A Scorpion,’ proved virtually indistinguishable from his debut – his expertise in contrasting eerie orchestration with heavily reverbed melodic tones which twist amongst crisp rhythmic architecture attracted yet more followers to his sound.
Next up tonight is Cause 4 Concern (C4C) , a drum and bass recording and production group consisting of Ed Holmes, Mark Clements, Stuart Perkins, and Tobie Burrows. Founded in 1999, the group initially signed with Moving Shadow label under the alias nCode. Soon, however, the group changed its name to Cause 4 Concern and started their own record label, Cause 4 Concern Recordings, primarily for releasing their own material. Since 1999, Cause 4 Concern have produced over 30 releases. Their debut full length album ‘Pandemic’ was released in ‘09. They have remixed and collaborated with Matrix, Deep Blue, Raiden, Usual Suspects and Teebee, and released under the aliases Nomis and Troubled Mindz.
Surround Sound boss Lethal is influenced by early hardcore and Detroit techno. Around late ’96, the tech-step boom in drum n bass broke in a big way and Lethal found himself hooked. He has released on a variety of labels including Position Chrome, Ohm Resistance and Offkey. Expect intense, tight mixing and dirty double drops.
Rude FM’s DJ E is one of the guys responsible for the international, dark drum n bass party Therapy Sessions. He has dropped his bass heavy industrial tech for nights including Autopsy, Hardware, Prospect, Ill Moot, Tech:nology and Pirate Sessions. Today, E has got releases coming on Vampire Records, Broken Audio, Freak and Revolution, to name a few.
Stapleton commands immense respect as an MC in the drum n bass scene. Having been asked to demo for Trouble On Vinyl back in ’04, he’s knuckled down and firmly established himself as a Renegade Hardware MC internationally. He currently has residencies with Therapy Sessions, W10 Records, Hospitality Brighton, Breakneck and Intent2Supply.
Stapleton’s style is a combination of original wordplay, intelligence, versatility, presence and crowd control.
28 year old Fokus is a new breed of MC whose lyrics have rhythm and substance. Considered by many to be a relatively fresh face in the world of drum and bass, he’s earned his stripes on the pirate radio and club circuit in the Home Counties. Emerging onto the London scene in ’04, he hosted a weekly show on Origin FM, where he caught the attention of the city’s promoters and won a residency at the award-winning Traffic. He has gone on to play at events including Intrigue, Renegade Hardware, Fabric Live, Therapy Sessions, Dezibel and Atmosphere. Performances on Drum and Bass Arena’s ‘DNBTV’ and other radio stations, including Ministry Of Sound and Kool FM, have reached the ears of audiences around the world.
Room 2 is taken over by Broken Audio Recordings, who will be representing the deeper, musical side of drum n bass. They have grown in a short space of time and have already signed artists including DBR UK, Skeptical, Genotype, Meth, Kodo, Flatliners, MindMapper and more, with the likes of Fabio, Doc Scott and Dbridge supporting the label.
