Three is the magic number or so they say. Well, it’s certainly true for UP^^ and we will be hosting our third party of the year at Turnmills on Saturday, September 22nd and, guess what, it’s also our third birthday! The last UP^^ back in July featured some of our favourite guests so far including StoneBridge and Herd & Fitz making a welcome return. For the third birthday we have something very special lined-up with a truly diverse and exciting pair of headliners for your dancing pleasure. It’s a tale of two cities too as we take over Turnmills with our infectious brand of fiercely funky house across four rooms of music.
We’ve been after him for a while now and we’re very proud to have Norman Jay MBE onboard for the UP^^ third birthday. London legend, king of the carnival and a true gentleman, there’s no one who lays down the funk quite like Norman Jay – they just had to make him an MBE for giving us all such a damn good time. From his early days on the London warehouse scene through till his residency with Dusted and global DJ travels, there’s a special magic when Norman’s at the controls and he’s been a firm favourite at Turnmills over the years, so it’ll be great to have him back behind the decks there. It also comes hot on the heels of the release of his latest compilation, ‘Good Times 7’, so let the good times roll!
For our second guest we’ll be travelling across the Atlantic to New York as we welcome Sammy Jo (Scissor Sisters Tour DJ) to the party. Since 1997 Sammy Jo has been a regular fixture on the New York club scene playing at nights like Messy and Click + Drag where he met Jake Shears of soon-to-be-formed Scissor Sisters. In 2004 Shears asked Sammy Jo to join them on the Scissor Sisters Crevice Canyon Tour, a union that worked so well that the band recruited him as their official tour DJ. Since then Sammy Jo has been playing clubs throughout Europe creating a name for himself while also supporting the Scissor Sisters whenever they call on him. His unique style blending electro, house, and dark disco sounds just perfect for UP^^ too and we’re expecting a real treat from Sammy Jo.
Joining our two very special guests in the main room will be resident Ben Dela-Peña with his customary closing set and two young guns in the shape of Carl Johnston from clubbing website beenseen – check out www.beenseen.com – and Jack Michaels. Over in the second room, meanwhile, Innuendo will be your hosts. It’s exactly a year to the very day that Welfare For The Digital, the guys behind the Innuendo parties, made their UP^^ debut – they impressed us so much that night that we’ve invited them back to take over T2 for themselves and they’ll be bringing along the full Innuendo crew. These guys have been making some serious waves across London recently and will be celebrating their first birthday by taking over the bar at the Ministry of Sound just three weeks before UP^^. Expect the very best in underground tough and progressive house with a proper party atmosphere.
R U Dirty? are another young London crew who have been showing the big boys a few new tricks recently. With residents Filth&Splendour at the helm they’ll be bringing their trademark brand of big room electro, rollin’ house, warehouse raves and dancefloor slaves to the third space. No prisoners will be taken!
Finally, StudentRave are your hosts upstairs in Topfloor. These guys have been putting on some great new events recently and will be treating us to a fine selection of all things house tonight. With the smoking ban now in force, Turnmills will also be opening the doors to the Anexo bar upstairs to create a small but comfortable outside smoking area on Turnmill Street complete with seating and shrubbery – we’ll be providing some musical accompaniment too.
So there you have it – UP^^ is back for our third birthday and we’re going to party just the way we like to with a superb night of musical entertainment featuring only the freshest, sexiest and downright fiercest funky house around. With a line-up like this you just know it’s going to rock. Let’s not forget the stylish and sophisticated UP^^ crowd too who like dress up to get down and party like there’s no tomorrow. Join us at our spiritual home of Turnmills as we prepare to dance till dawn and maybe have a little birthday drink along the way. Saturday, 22nd September 2007 and the only way is UP^^, baby… dress to flirt!
