Wonky house? Back when Playtime was a glint in the eye of its parents Big Daddy and Mike Monday, there was no wonky, no where. No Claude von Stroke and no Dirtybird Records. No stupid noises in house tracks.
Furry boots and glowsticks were everywhere.
And men never, ever called each other princess.
Well, we fixed that, didn’t we? For a while there it was all wonky all night long in London, everyone with that look in their eye – until it got serious again, and the giggling stopped on the nation’s dancefloor.
Well, princess, screw that particular deathly boring hush. It’s time to get off-kilter. Sat Dec 8 Playtime is back, with John Acquaviva’s new touring night Electronic in tow. Throw away the furry boots and get your hoedown wonk on - freak out at our Xmas warehouse party…
PLAYTIME VERSUS ELECTRONIC – THE XMAS PARTY
(Wonk on. Tune in. Freak out.)
JOHN ACQUAVIVA
He's one of the world's 100 biggest DJs, says DJ mag. An untouchable technical innovator, producer and DJ, he's one of the founders of Beatport, Final Scratch, and Plus8, and he released the first records of a set of techno luminaries from Richie Hawtin to Speedy J. But the last two years he's also focused on his own music, with six Beatport top tens in the last two years with tracks like "Bungee/Ethanol," his collaboration with Tommie Sunshine and Maddox, "Running", and key remixes of new artists like Damon Gee and Greg Kobe/Robots Need Oil. And next year, 08, he’s giving up touring alone to take his new touring club Electronic on the road – one of the best eyes for talent in the business bringing the best new European producers to the best European clubs…
MIKE MONDAY
Usually we start with the reviews. His debut album, Smorgasbord was "album of the month, and one of the albums of the year" (IDJ), "One of the finest electronic albums this side of Playgroup [..] a classic" (One Week to Live), "One of the 100 reasons dance music still rules" (IDJ), and "an LP we just can't put down" (DJ). He's the only UK DJ to regularly be invited to play with Claude von Stroke and friends at the Dirtybird parties in San Francisco. He's the key European signing for Om Records, headlining their Sonar gigs with an exclusive set with Jesse Rose. This is a relatively rare London gig for Monday, and the first time the Playtime residents he and Big Daddy have played together in about four months.
OLIVIER GIACOMOTTO
His new EP, "Japan", is out next month - the followup to "Gail in the O" (Beatport#1), his remix of Robots Need Oil's Volta (Beatport#1), "Walking on the Moog" (Beatport top 10) and his remix of "Swimming with Sharks" (another Beatport top 10). Are you seeing a theme here? Giacomotto is one of the top selling electro artists of this year, throwing down a clean, melodic sound that's drawn in equal parts from his traditional techno roots and new electro sounds - the reason he's rated by DJs from as wide a range as Vath, Rios, and Bug to Misstress Barbara, Carl Cox, and Green Velvet. And he's also a key act for Electronic - appearing at every one of the parties so far...
BIG DADDY
He's the man who built an entire club, Playtime, around the idea that straight men like to be called "princess" - and weirdly, it turned out to be true. But he was also the first person to bring DJs like Claude von Stroke and Abe Duque to London, and his nights Playtime and GEEK have helped create a scene that continues to push amazing DJs like Justin Martin, the Catz and Tommy Four Seven. Then there's Big Daddy's new label, GEEK records, whose first release - King Roc's Tirades of Env - will be out December, as well as the return of Playtime proper next year...
