Timeless III - Review

Reported by tom / Submitted 15-01-02 22:15

Frantic have created a monster: after just three parties Timeless has become one of those parties that you just cannot miss, unless you're on some sort of New Year's resolution 'month off clubbing over January' type thing, you know who you all are Wink . Also, as they're planning to run Timeless just 3 times a year they're safeguarding that 'special event' feeling that only other infrequent parties like Match Made in Heaven and Hard House Academy can generate.

The music policy advertised for Timeless is to play anthems from the last 2 years alongside today's most bangingest tracks, and to quote that particularly bad TV advert 'It does exactly what it says on the tin'. Steve Hill's 3hr back to back set with the Knuckleheadz set the tone of the evening - like being wrenched about in a continuous timewarp, tunes piling in dating back all the way to the good ol' 20th century - I can still hear the 'Doctor Who' police box sounds ringing in my ears now.... at least I think that's what's making them ring.

I find there's usually a point in the night when things just come together for me - the energy of the crowd is just there, the lighting is perfect and the body and mind are ticking along pretty sweetly. Then there comes a moment when the DJ drops that tune and I just completely lose the plot. This time it was around the changeover between Steve Hill's set and Spencer Freeland's when they played Phlash's Frantic Theme, the one that breaks down with the vocal 'Get a life you drug addict'. The crowd roared, the lights flared, we sprinted in from the bar and the dancefloor just started raging.

All that was needed at that point was someone to pick up that atmosphere and run with it - step forward Spencer Freeland who played one of those sets that I'll be talking about for years (and winding up people who didn't hear it), just absolutely blindingly brilliant. Now Spencer's DJ'd at every single Frantic since they started so he's perfectly placed to know what's worked for clubbers over the years and it showed in his set. Just as you'd caught your breath from one anthem, the next floor shaker would roll in straight behind it and set the dancefloor alight again. Perfect stuff and indeed everyone I spoke to about the night thought he played a standout set.

A difficult act to follow for Nick Sentience ? You could say that. But instead of trying to match the hard driving pace of the end of Spencer's set he started by playing a stunning classical piano interlude which he'd created that Saturday afternoon in the studio. Have a listen to it here and see if it takes you back Smile This lead into the first half of his set which was 45 minutes of trance anthems perfectly pieced together. Here's another short sound clip as he played 'Born Slippy' shortly after the intro, just listen to that crowd lapping it up Smile . It's no coincidence that I took more photos of the crowd in poses like this than at any other event we've been to so far:

Halfway through his hour and a half behind the decks, Nick changed up a gear when he dropped instruMENTAL. The rest of his set was then unleashed on the crowd and composed of banging hard uplifting anthems all the way to the end and delivered in the same flawless manner as Spencer's set.

Phil Reynolds took over the DJ box for the final set of the night, I thought taking things easier on us than his usual cranking sets but bringing things back to the boil as his final few track selections came out. His set culminated with the awesome tunes Wippenberg's 'Neuro Dancer' and the encore track, Parker & Clind's 'Generator'. Here's a short movie clip showing the Palace as Generator breaks, sends shivers down your spine, doesn't it ? Big grin

I've never heard a crowd in a club beg for an encore louder, longer or more enthusiastically than they did at the end of Timeless, and with good reason. A great club, an amazing crowd and some of the finest music to be heard anywhere. Bring on the next one...

I should mention though one of the only negatives of the night for me, which was the number of people that were allowed into the Palace - while the Frantic XMas Ball and Timeless II were nicely full, Timeless III was absolutely rammed. Consequently, it was also seriously hot in there as the Palace's air conditioning system struggled to cope and this had knock on effects on the queueing for entry and cloakrooms. I'd like to see the promoters implement the same policy on deliberately reduced numbers for Timeless as they have for the regular Frantics.

Your next opportunity to catch a Frantic will be at the Valentine's Ball on the 9th February - for details click here. Timeless itself will happen 3 times a year from now onwards and we'll bring you details of the next one just as soon as we get them.

Since writing this review I've heard from Frantic that the actual numbers through the doors was actually only 20 people more than at the XMas Ball.

What can make a big difference at these events is where people are in the venue at any one time - for instance when things are really going off on the main dancefloor then the rest of the venue becomes comparatively empty and the dancefloor very busy.

It's certainly true at Timeless III that there seemed to be fewer people in the smaller dancefloor at the top of the Palace when we went up there - everyone just wanted to be on the main floor. To help ease this, at all future events Frantic will be reducing numbers by a further 50 places to make this kind of situation even less likely to occur Smile
