Tasty 3 - Review

Reported by Cosmic / Submitted 03-04-02 08:44

"Can it be number three already?" These words whispered amongst clubbers and industry alike regarding London’s newest Superclub. In the build up to the hugely successful move to the Mass, Tasty Promoter Billy 'Daniel' Bunter pulled out all the stops and flooded the UK wide dance industry armed with flyers big enough and bold enough to please those who like to decorate their walls; you can find him being boisterous in any flying team after a night out. Dan also showed the clubbing nation his determination to succeed, with his hands on approach and attention to detail.

We headed down to The Mass in Brixton for around 11-30, walking up from the station Tasty flyer teams were getting in some last minute flyering, spreading the good word and generally pointing people in the right direction. On the door the Legend, 'Die Hard Dave' stood sporting a pair of rose tinted sunglasses and a smile for all, that is until he saw that I skipped the queue and asked me to join the back. As usual I almost took him seriously, but stood my ground and swiftly gained entry. Once I had done 'the stairs thing' and got into the main room, it was clear that it was to be another success story. On the decks the 3rd of the b2b sessions, the bright green laser firing off Dj names Skol and what I can only guess to be, newcomer Max Clarke. Battling through the dancefloor for a closer look, the pit in front of the Dj box was rammed full! of Complete Party Nutters jumping around to an equally nuts Dj, Oh look... Matt Clarke Big grin The boys were certainly popular with this crowd. A huge selection of classics were dug out and banged out, always know that Skols responsible when it comes to complete dancefloor meltdown thanks to Steve Morley’s 'Reincarnations!'

Finishing to a rapturous applause and some waxing lyrical from Bunter, the PA advertised as a world exclusive was set to kick. Scratchmaster Lee James performed flawlessly throughout the hour long set, Jon Doe pieced together the music and Bunter applied all the effects. The Bunter/Doe PA had been anticipated by friends of mine who last caught this act last year at a Pickle in Brixton Academy. They rocked it then, they rocked it again! Awesome stuff. Having already both played at Tasty 1, Phil Reynolds and b2b partner for the evening Nick Sentience knew what to expect. Taking over from the last dying riffs of the PA, these two are really something! It’s been a while since I've heard Nick and Phil do a b2b and having both found such individual styles it could have gone any way. Not at all. How can it go any way but their way? Absolutely blinding!!! Loved it.

After much bouncing around and the end of that 'Oh yeah, that’s why we club' set, I took off for a walk around the club to check out the 2nd room and to meet some people. As I left, Karim had taken things on a different tip, a harder tip. Needed a break. The 2nd room had picked up from when I had arrived, which must have been a relief for al those concerned. Billed as another main room, the 2nd room at the Mass is big enough to be just that. Inside the dancefloor was moving nicely to some Slower, Chunkier beats and basslines. It’s good to see a clear crossover of musical preference, rather than a hidden away room with the music played just an excuse to open it. All chill out areas as full as the dancefloors, people lounging out, receiving massage and just generally chillin. Fantastic atmosphere wherever I ended up, people just happy to be..

Back in the main room, Karim had given the crowd what I soon learned to have been 'a bit of a rollercoaster.' Having gone so deep and hard initially, the man behind 'Do Not Bend' had curved his set up into a fast paced hard NRG sound which tore its way out of the speakers and assaulted each person at once! Fantastic! Cried out the crowd slowly coming to terms with what was happening and why! Unique, only Karim could have played that set and did. Last set of the night fell into the more than capable hands of Tasty resident DJ Roosta and to everyone’s obvious approval Steve Hill. From the very first tune the whole night’s master plan fitted together like a 2 piece jigsaw that had seemed like a thousand. The word that describes what happened from then till the last tune can only be 'Euphoria!' The feeling took the roof clean off, or was that the cork from the Champagne! that Bunter was crackin open? Djs and promoters jumpin around like bigger loons than all us put together sealed the bond between host and guests forever. Tasty 3, breaking down barriers, rewriting the rules.

The next Tasty called, wait for it, Tasty 4, is on Friday 3rd May again at The Mass. For full details click here.
