Future Dance vs. Frantic - Review

Future Dance vs. Frantic
@ Bagleys Film Studios
The 12th of April 2002

Well what do I say? You see I am not a fan of the famous Bagleys Film Studios, in fact I have managed to avoid entering the building in the past three years I have been raving purely because of its reputation. I had just heard enough about the place to put me off, but I decided seeing as it was Future Dance that I would finally break my rules and go. Now that in itself says a lot about Future Dance, I can be an extremely stubborn person when I want to be but Future Dance is something special so I ditched my policy for one night to enter the much talked about Bagleys.

After a fairly brief search I moved upstairs and straight into Preacher’s set, he was belting out ‘heaven’s cry’ as I stepped through the doors and I began bounding around immediately. The boy didn’t mess about, chucking out top quality tunes from the start. Eventually though I realised that this is Bagleys and I had four other rooms to check out. So slipping into the Hardcore room to be battered with baselines was next on the agenda. I bowled into the room and was immediately impressed by the atmosphere, this was very early in the evening and the room was filling up rapidly. Everyone was grinning, dancing, laughing, joking etc… basically the room was going off from the start. Down stairs next and into the Trance room, now either I missed the Trance set Wink or really this was another excuse to do things in a Future Dance fashion. The boys down here were belting out steaming hard dance and it certainly put a smile on my face so after I had, had my listen I wondered into the Techno room. Now for those who haven’t been to Bagleys room five is a very small cavernous room. I walked into said cavernous dark room in the bottom of Bagleys to be had by a searing selection of Acid Techno for those of you thinking along the lines of Mauro Picotto you would be very scared. This was real Techno, hammering out of the speakers at speed that rivalled the Hardcore room. I wasn’t really in the mood for this at the time though so back up to the Old Skool room to have a listen. Now this did grab me nicely, one of my mates has suddenly got well into his Old Skool and is pretty much refusing to play anything else. This is fine by me but I hadn’t really clicked with it until now, But when I stepped into that room it just kicked me off, playing some absolutely awesome material. The most memorable for me was when they dropped the classic ‘4am’ this set me straight off and the rest of the night flowed freely from there.

The problem is I can’t really go into massive detail on each room, because there where five rooms I spent most of my time chopping and changing the music as soon as my mood did. I know the Hardcore room went off all night long, with DJs like Sharkey & Energy, Kaos and Vibes all playing superb sets, belting out the Hardcore sounds with style and precision. The flow of the music being aided by MCs like Ethos & Wizzkid, laying down lyrics that sent the crowd wild. This room was the busiest of the night and it was understandable as to why, everyone was having it, loving it, giving it, it just had an atmosphere that left you feeling elated. You couldn’t stop grinning and bursting into action as the beats pummelled out of the speakers every time you wandered in there.

The Old Skool room was kicking throughout the night, and the DJ’s in here were really squeezing every last drip of energy out of the music and spreading it over the crowd with each new tune. I heard numerous classics from ‘valley of the shadows’ to ‘out of space’ being played, each and everyone gaining the reaction it deserved.

The Frantic room at Future Dance was going off in the usual Frantic style, with a eye catching line up of Preacher, Spencer Freeland, Ed Real, BK and Phil Reynolds. All of which brought a different style to the decks, Preacher pumped out a superb range of tunes, Spencer Freeland took a tougher groovier edge to the night. Ed Real stepped up and slammed out some banging Hard House, until BK took things in a very tribal direction leaving Phil Reynolds to rip the roof off with some uplifting belters.

In conclusion, this was an absolutely amazing night, each room bringing out the best in its DJs and because it was their second birthday they were giving it some on top. It's one of those nights the most diverse group of mates could go to, because each person can find something they love across the five rooms. Definitely worth a visit, at least once so that you can realise how good it is and go back again. I’ll be at the next one at Bagleys, no doubt about it. Stomping Smile
