Tolerance 1st Birthday - Review

Rather than be the creature of habit I am known to be, on Saturday night I decided to try something different and headed down to Tolerance in Tulse Hill with some good friends to have a look see at what they had to offer as a club night. I have to be honest, I had not heard much about this night, except that it had a small and loyal following and was situated ‘down near Brixton somewhere’...
We arrived rather later than expected, around 12.30am and were surprised to see a large queue formed outside. We waited around for a while, expecting the queue to move quickly, but to our dismay we ended up waiting around an hour just to be let in !!! Nothing to do with the promoters I’m told, but rather the venue bouncers operating a door policy of ‘One in, one out’ but what was more like ‘One in, ten out’. Just as we were thinking of heading back to a mates house, a couple of us were let in. We dropped our coats in the cloakroom and turned around to survey the scene, and this was what I saw…..
Tolerance is situated in what looks like a dirty, old pub from the outside (the pub's called the Telegraph), but is far from that on the inside. Once we were past the bouncers, you are directly into a large lounge type room with several comfortable couches all around with a large bar in the middle. The decoration is modern and funky and the room has a good, easy feel to it. There were Funky House tunes being played in here with what seemed like a very relaxed and easy going crowd milling about, chilling on the chairs and a few dancers shaking it about near the dance floor.
After getting a drink from the bar (which had run out of ice!!!  ) we decided to head into the dance room to see just what was being played.
As I walked up the stairs, I was physically assaulted by a heat wave coming from the dance floor, and as we entered into the dance room, it was so hot, we literally could not breathe ! All I can say is that it was by FAR the hottest club I have ever been to. I made a fast exit to catch my breath and was told by one of the promoters, Nathan, that the air conditioning was due to be fixed in a week’s time, and there was nothing they could do about it. They had already handed out icy poles, and taken water guns into the crowd to spray the dancers to try and lower the temp just a little – good move if you ask me as it was looking dangerous in there!! I decided to take a deep breath, and head back in to the dance room mainly because the tunes that were being played in there sounded great and I didn’t want to miss any more of it!
We headed to the far corner where they had a large fan churning out hot air, and managed to squeeze in with the rest of the crowd who had the same idea of at least getting some air and am pleased to say the music being pumped out by DJ ketec was a brilliant set of hard uplifting house and trance. The crowd were well and truly up for it and dancing away like mad with smiles all round and plenty of appreciation for the music. Within minutes I had worked up a nice ‘glowing’ sweat  but was thoroughly enjoying the music and the crowd who were friendly and happy.
The choice of music was mostly all the old favourites which got the crowd into a frenzy of whooping lunatics! Soon after ketec the next DJ Marc Salamanda came on and continued to play along the same vein to the crowd who showed no signs of slowing down! By now we had left the dance floor to catch a breather and chilled out in the lounge room where the tunes where relaxing and easy going, just what was needed!! I have to admit after the long wait to get in to the club and the heat on the dance floor, we had all settled in and were enjoying ourselves a lot. The club had a nice intimate feel without being too small and by the time we left (after popping back in for a final stomp to DJ’s Rox and Tags ) we were all satisfied with the night out.
All in all, the night was good if a little different. I think the crowd and the music made the evening what it was and once the venue have their air con sorted out and some ice behind the bar (!!) it is worth going down to Tolerance for the night with some friends for a good uplifting stomp.
