Kaos - Review

Kaos takes place down at the Southside Bar off Cleveland st which is about 5 minutes walk from either Great Portland St or Warren st tubes. As you walk in through the front door you could be forgiven for thinking you've walked into the wrong place as there's just a small bar area at ground level but it's soon obvious that it all takes place down the set of stairs to the side as the first hint of tuneage wafts up as people pass through the doors. Downstairs is a very nice clean bar, seating area and decent dancefloor area, it's definitely a step up from the most common hard house venues which are (mentioning no names ) usually just one step away from being condemned.
As promoter Steven T says, "we were looking for something intimate, small, personal and most importantly, clean. Because we were targetting Sunday clubbing, we felt we needed a place to relax after canning it all weekend or a place to go have a quiet drink with friends and if you felt like it, go for a stomp downstairs! We felt that clubbing has become impersonal over last few months, the fun was missing. It also has a sound-proof cocktail bar that we play ambient, chill-out music in, It's a total contrast to the club downstairs so people can socialise and get away from the club if they want too without having to go home. The cocktails are cheap so it's affordable to anyone."
It's immediately apparent that things are going the right way as by the time I arrived the b2b pairing of Simon Field and Simon Rutherford had already kicked off proceedings in style. Both these DJs are already breaking into the main rooms at some of London's biggest events including Fevah, Logic, Endorphin and Fahrenhite. These two play regularly together and it shows, knocking out some transparently mixed tunes which perfectly set the tone for the rest of the afternoon, dipping back in time dragging out classics from the last couple of years and strapping them down alongside this week's stormers, nice
Taking us from here was a b2b pairing from Kaos promoters and residents Abs and Steven T, this time Steven taking a lot of help from the continent bringing in some fine hard trance numbers with Abs bringing out the classics again. There's no formal music policy at Kaos but Steven says "we do try to be different. We We try not to sound like all other clubs but it's difficult as a lot of the dj's play the same music." With lots of comments around the chat forums recently that nights are sounding too samey, dipping back into the past seems to work by making a set sound fresh and up to date especially when there seem to be so few decent tracks being released; although is this going to have the effect of reducing innovation and production on new tracks even further
Next up Tara Reynolds winding things up a gear with a set packed with all the best most recent and upcoming tracks including the excellent Stimulant DJs latest offerings and the awesome RR Fierce / Nick Sentience remix of Neurone X which has in my opinion the finest bassline after the break of any tune ever - although BK's Revolution runs it a close second place. Then Danny Gilligan showing why he's resident at that other sunday superclub Riot, churning things up even more with some even harder faster offerings. Great progression of sets but by this stage my memory is starting to look a little bit on the hazy side as I'm taking advantage of the evil cocktails dispensed by the friendly barstaff and at £3 a go it would be mad not to Sunday afternoon drinking is both one of life's worst ideas and greatest pleasures... you know you're going to regret it come Monday morning but damn it if it isn't tempting
With so many other Sunday clubs competing for the afternoon slot, I wanted to know what the promoters hoped to achieve with yet another new party - "We started Kaos because there are so many dj's out there that just don't get the opportunity to play out so our policy is to book promising dj's to give them a chance. We are not trying to compete with anyone else, just offering an alternative to lazying around at home on a Sunday. I think what we have is kinda unique to what everyone else offers. Sunday clubbing is a strange phenomenon, it could be good because you stay in on a Saturday night and get your clubbing 'fix' the next day and you are fresh for work on Monday or it can be bad, as you go out Saturday night and only come home Monday morning and you are ringing the boss with the poorest excuse possible !"
Next month's lineup on the 18th August will be as follows:
James Lawson
Tara Reynolds
Jon Rundell
Abs
Steven T
Craig Paxton
Donna Birt

From: Rosaleen on 5th Jul 2002 10:21.16 Didn't make it to this Kaos, but was at previous one - agree bigtime with all that's been said. Looking forward to it becoming established; great little venue, friendly crowd - blinding music - oh yes - and the cocktails...!
