X-Static Back to Back - Review

Once again another blinding X-Static! As always the boys bring the best out of the DJs and knock together a pukka night of banging beats and uplifting floor fillers. That’s why I love X-Static, its always good, its one of the most reliable nights I have been to; every time I step onto the premises it has been quality. Mostly this is because they do keep to a strict policy of who plays there, due to the fact that they don’t book names, they book talent.
This time it was not only a back to back special but also a battle of the nights, with the X-Static boys, Wayne Burgess & Joel B sharing the booth. Xlr8 had Skol & Roosta representing, Riot had Danny Gilligan & Jon Rundell. Frantic’s popular player Spencer Freeland was working with Tara Reynolds to supply the best track selections they could. Others involved were DJ Cruz & Birdy from Cheek and Steve Spectrum & Vivian Marky from Gatecrasher. Now if that doesn’t read as quality line up with plenty of variation in style, I can certainly tell you it was.
Now from the first half of the night you could tell that German Hard Trance is certainly making an impact on blighty. Although the start to the night was excellent and I must admit my mates and the crowd were getting into it more than me. It just wasn’t as X-Static like as usual, coming across slightly less full on from the start than I had become used to. Please don’t think for a second that the tunes weren’t kicking it, with Organ Donors’ 99.9 and the Hard House remix of the Prodigy’s Voodoo People blaring devastatingly across a packed dance floor the track selection was superb. It was more the fact that normally you’d walk in to the full on effect of most night’s latter hours. The night then progressed nicely building with each back to back set, getting a bit faster as it went until Joel B & Wayne Burgess were having the crowd begging with blinding belters and stomach churning basslines.
To follow up their set the DJ was gonna have to be good and Tara Reynolds did the job nicely playing alone for the first half an hour and then for the next hour back to back with Spencer Freeland. This was the first time I had heard Tara play & I have to admit I spent most of the her set sat up on the balconies appreciating the superb array of uplifting anthems she squeezed in. I love my Hard Trance and Uplifting Hard House and both came thick and fast from the speakers, arriving at the perfect time in the night for me to appreciate it most. Spencer Freeland arrived shortly and things continued to flow with ease and excellence and I was left with little choice but to dance my arse off for the last forty-five minutes they had left.
To be honest I wasn’t sure I could get much more impressed but Danny Gilligan & Jon Rundell really did do well. After Danny’s brilliant set with Shaun Hull at Insomnia the week before I was looking forward to this and to seeing Jon Rundell for the first time. Both brought the pace down a touch to just the right speed so that all us knackered rave monkeys could comfortably keep up. But although speed dropped the intensity and ‘Hardness’ of the tunes increased with the best bit for me being when Rundell dropped 4 Tribes by the Organ Donors, oh my god what a fucking awesome track! Between them Danny and Jon blew me away and kept me dancing right to the end even though my legs had jellied and my heart was doing overtime. Then ‘when you thought it was over’ they continued to chuck out tunage until 6:20 am… ahhh joy!
The next X-Static will be on the 23rd August at Heaven... details on here when we get them.
