Heat - Review

Reported by littlemissgenki / Submitted 04-11-02 00:28

You have to hand it to the Southern Hemisphere, their trees may bear strange fruit but boy does that fruit taste sweet. For many this was no pre-party but the main event, with many choosing to end their Friday nights at one of the capital’s finest venues. But far from seeing jaded faces and glazed eyes, the world renowned Turnmills — so used to hosting the stars of clubland — not only had stars in the DJ boxes, but the place was full to the rafters with Southern stars and starlets, their lights so bright that many had to flip sunnies over their eyes. On chatting to punters at the door I discovered many couldn’t get down to the Hard House Academy, but were still smiling as some of the line-up were at the pre-party. As one happy chappie put it, ‘The same DJs for half the price, that rocks’ and rock it did, for money wasn’t the object for these hell-raisers.

In the back room, DJ Uto got the early birds flapping their wings with his hard fast industrial beats. Like a little Lucifer fire starter Uto ignited things with a roar, and the back room was alight. Those hardcore clubbers still going from the previous night had their embers well blasted, while those of us stone cold sober after a morning cleaning the flat felt our cockles start to warm. Decked out like a tribal meeting room with two huge pillars of fire burning either side of the DJ, Uto was heating the place like a kiln, showing why he’s not only one of Japan’s hottest hard dance exports, but a perfect opener for both Heat and the evening’s Hard House Academy.

Our day's clubbing had indeed started with a bang, but it was still early Saturday afternoon and the cinema room called. Detoured by the main room I was forced to have a groove to Tubbs’ euphoric beats, but managed to pull myself away—oh the life of a reviewer isn’t always an easy one! In the cinema room Dead Man Walking was an appropriate backdrop for some chilled out funky beats and despite the welcoming invitation for us to sit and get absorbed in the big screen there were already a good few happy faces grooving away. Dallas lay down the foundations for a lovely dynasty of rhythm and the crowd were loving it. Sadly Dallas will be flying back to New Zealand to chase the sun for a couple of months—you will be sorely missed, and make sure that you bring that kung fu back soon now ya hear!

The main room was alight to the last of Tubbs’ energizing set and Bronson Vieira just added to the fire. The lazers were doing their magic and already clubbers were going hot and heavy on the main dancefloor. It could easily have been 3am not 3pm, with everyone around havin’ it hard.

Meanwhile Dave Lochrie had the back room filling up and coming up. His grin got broader as he slowly cranked up the temperature, until the classic moment when he lit the bass rip and those who’d been chatting to their mates over a few quiets were finally forced to acknowledge that this wasn’t brunch at a bar/café but one of the best clubs in London, and they’re at Heat—the hottest day clubbing event the city has seen in a long time.

Back in the cinema room the smoldering funky house was building up a smokestorm as Brad 212 Finlay played classic anthems to an appreciative crowd. Again, we had to drag ourselves away from the dancefloor, back to the blasting back room where the flaming pyrogenics really made you feel like you really were in the heart of a wide open fireplace. Shaun Hull was burning the place up and the furnace was pumping.

In the mainroom, we joined a packed crowd erupting to the last of Bronson Vieira’s volcanic set, then Marc French let a blow torch to the decks and the result was dazzling. We returned to the back room to see the end of Shaun’s raging red hot set and Steve Blake begin his onslaught. Then there was just time for some of Funky Mike sultry latino beats before it was time to head south for HHA.

Depressed about being in London for winter? Then get yourself down to the next Heat—it’ll do more than warm the souls of your feet but will take you to a tropical furnace of pure unadulterated dance music and hard out good times, forcing you to leave the dead people walking to the DJ bars and rejoin the clubland of the living.

See ya at Supernova on Friday 9 November—where Heat takes on Frantic at The Fridge for an incredible night out with London’s two hottest clubs.
