Hardhouse Anthems 4 Launch - Interview with Rob Tissera

Reported by kafalicious / Submitted 20-05-03 22:22

With a career spanning over a decade some would say that Rob Tissera has seen it all! From partying and djing at the first acid house parties at warehouses in the north to banging out tunes to massive crowds at Love Parade and Sundissential. Rob took a few moments out to chat so we could find out more...

kaf You have quite a colourful and extensive history in the dance music scene in the UK which has seen you travel the world - in some cases many times over - and even land in jail! Care to give us a bit of a re-cap on what you’ve seen and done?!

Rob Tissera Wow – I wouldn’t know where to start! I’ve been a VERY lucky boy. I’ve fulfilled so many burning ambitions and things just get better every day. I’m still as hungry for success as the day I started and very little gets me down. Going to jail was the lowest point in my life but if anyone’s looking for inspiration on how to bounce back then look no further!

kaf From what you’ve seen, is there a great deal of difference between clubbers and the clubbing scene globally? Do you have a fave club? Anywhere you’d like to play?

RT It really doesn’t matter where you go in the world, all clubbers have a very similar mentality and the music is the common bond. I have loads of favourite clubs. The top five are SUNDISSENTIAL, GARLANDS, GOOD GREEF, FRANTIC & FUNKISSENTIAL. I’ve played at most decent clubs in the world but I’d dearly love to play funky on the terrace at SPACE.

kaf Your style has been described as ‘blending deep and progressive trance, through to the downright hard and pumping house’. Anything you’d like to add to that?

RT I’m very versatile and that is what gives a dj longevity. I love to nail it out good and hard at sundissential but there are times I like to play more trancey if I feel it’s appropriate. I also love house so playing at FUNKISSENTIAL is all about pleasure for me.

kaf I like your website www.robtissera.com. Was the design your idea? Do you maintain it?

RT it was designed by 2 friends of mine who run a company called SOLSTONE , they are wicked and it’s been a great way to keep in touch with my audience. I try my best to keep it up to date but I’m a very busy boy!

kaf Soon to be released is Nukleuz’ Hard House Anthems 4 of which you mixed CD 2 – your first compilation. What was that experience like? Can we look forward to seeing more?

RT It was quite a tough job as I was given a total of 3 days to choose the tracks and then work out the mixes. I normally spend up to a week putting together an ordinary set so the limited time was a bit of an issue but I’m really happy with the end product. I’m going to do a double album with sundissential after the summer. It’s going to be hard on 1 cd and funky on the other which’ll be blinding!!

kaf Tell us a bit about R.T. Project and Queue Records? What future releases have you got in store?

RT I’m going to put both projects on hold over the summer as I’ve got loads more material that I want to release under my own name. ROWLAND & WRIGHT have just remixed ‘THE DAY WILL COME’ and they’ve done a belting job!! I’m just in discussions with several labels about this and I’ve also got a new track that I’ve done with Y2K called ‘bring the lights down’ which is a collaberation with Nathan d’mour who’s a good friend of mine.

kaf What producers out there are doing it for you? Who would you most like to collaborate with?

RT I really like what BK does – he is the daddy. I’ve just collaborated with him on a track called ‘zulu nation’ which is rock solid. ROWLAND & WRIGHT are also on fire at the moment. I love what SHARKBOY does and james Lawson is the bomb.

kaf Residencies: where can people catch you play?

RT Sundissential is my main residency and I LOVE IT! I’m also playing regularly for frantic, good greef, funkissential, all the big god’s kitchen tours, slinky and tons of others. I’m going to be in Ibiza all summer for GARLANDS @ PINUP. please Check my site for more details.

kaf Career highlights?

RT Playing on radio 1 recently, hardhouse academy, the love parade, global gathering, homelands, slinky’s sixth birthday, all the tidy weekender’s.all the new year’s day bashes we’ve done at sundissential the list is endless!!!

kaf Any lows?

RT Going to jail wasn’t too clever but I used it as a source of inspiration to get out and make it as a dj – which doesn’t seem to have done me too much harm!

kaf To MC or not MC, what’s your stance?

RT I think there is a place for someone to introduce dj’s. it gives the night a lift and makes people cheer even more. It’s also nice to be able to thank an audience for their massive support – how can that be a bad thing??

kaf What do you feel makes a dj ‘great’?

RT Understanding what a crowd is feeling and being able to change direction if they’re not responding. Being able to talk to people has helped me enormously. You have to be on the same wavelength otherwise you just become boring ,fat, overpaid and out of touch.

kaf What do you want to see happen for you in 2003?

RT I’m doing so much good stuff at the moment so I couldn’t really wish for too much more. I’d love to do an essential mix on radio 1 and I’d love to have another big club anthem so those are the things that I’m working on right now. I’d also like to see funkissential go from strength to strength as it’s the freshest vibe that I’ve felt for a very long time.

kaf Final words for the HarderFaster readers?!

RT Please, please, please don’t ever stop doing what you love. Oh and come and say hello whenever you see me – I always stop to chat!

ta much to Rob for his time! Blush
