Glastonbury 2003, the year that stole our hearts and left our belongings alone!

Up at 9 and eagerly awaiting my friends, I finally finish packing at 3.30pm and we’re on our way. After much deviation we land at Glastonbury at 10pm. Daf turned up and helped me to the site, and with a mile of walking the party didn’t begin until roughly midnight. The king of Sketch was the first to hand me a beer, and the fire was already underway, the first cries of Bollox and Timmeey echoing through the night like eerie beasts.
The next morning, My main enjoyment came from watching others struggling in with their camping equipment, and as the weekend progresses it becomes harder and harder to work your way through the crowds with all your stuff (there’s a tip, get there early in order to relax and fully enjoy the festivities). I headed to the Energy 24 rig to grace the decks for the first time. I started with Stomping System JS:16 (Camisra remix) (a nice break house track) and quickly ran out of that genre, although the crowd were loving it, looking in my bag I had only two options. Hard or Ambient. Having played all my middle ground stuff, I opted for Ambient as that was what I had been booked to play by the rig and well it being 6am they were all pretty tired and I had to respect that even if a few of the crowd REALLY disapproved. By the end of the last hour of ambient I was bored and tired, so I hooked up with my fire eating friend from Texas (who got straight off the plane, into a car and went directly to Glasto) and the rest of her crew I was on my way to the healing field, but the opportunity to play with my friends minds was just too enticing ( I was still completely straight at this point) so they lead me to see the best band of the whole weekend ‘The Darkness’, I wasn’t expecting metal before breakfast and certainly not with an operatic singer / front man dressed in white sequins! Laugh I nearly had an orgasm.
Healing field trip next and straight into the sauna, followed by a half hour reiki session, half hour reflexology and half hour aromatherapy massage. Bumping into the owners of the purple turtle and Ed Reals brother in the healing field came as a pleasant surprise. Back to the tent, on with the makeup and the electric blue cocktail dress and the time had come for the first indulgences. Katie and I held hands and skipped merrily into the Dance tent and watched a little of Seb Fontane, I know I didn’t stay long, but what happened between that and falling asleep backstage at Energy 24 is anyone’s guess (please fill me in contact@theting.net!) being woken up by Naomi and told that I was on in an hour. WHAT! I thought I was playing Saturday night. BOOOO L Desperately trying to text everyone to let them know but to no avail I went on and played a good traditional ‘AAAAAAAAARD as you like *Ting* set to a most appreciative crowd, lifting my dress and slapping my ass towards the audience on recognition of a couple of ARSE mixes. So impressed were the crew, that I got an extra half hour and Ed Real, stood by the side and supported me all the way. I spent a goodly amount of time dancing on stage with my new fluro umbrella (Requested back by popular demand!) at the Energy 24 rig that morning, really enjoying the sounds of MC Ribbz, and Sonar Luminescence.
Heading back to the camp site afterwards in order to sleep and failing miserably as the bands started up for the day. I got up and insisted that somebody take me somewhere. Daf lead me to the Pyramid stage and we watched Jools Holland. Excellent piano duo to finish! Over to the circus field and enjoyed the delights of ‘the white box’, a Capoera hoda, lots of interesting stilt walkers, and saw Allen TG for the first time (he had arrived straight after Torture Garden the night before with no sleep) looking like he’d been there for a week! No offence Allen but you were funny (he was also frying as he’d not got any sun cream on) LOL.
Saturday nights memory was of Ed’s set at Energy 24, a full crowd out front going wild, and so I took it upon myself to chuck glo-sticks out to the many outstretched arms. It was at this point that I got my camera out, managed to get the crowd all bigged up and waving, and at that point my camera said, sorry luv memory full, and it was not to be. Damn.
At this point I have to admit that I went back to the tent and got some well deserved sleep, before arriving at the rig for 8am Sunday morning. I was more than a little concerned that I had not brought the right tunage. (even though I had 60 records, and 100 CD’s, you can never have enough tunes!) thinking I was gonna have to play more ambient, following Pat Hurley who was playing dirty techno, Louise asked jokingly if I would play Trip masters vinyl, “HELL YES” was the reply, what does he play. Funky house came the reply and having not played it before I asked Chris if he was up for back to back. Needless to say it was the best 2 hours of the whole festival. It was liberating playing something different and a damn site slower than what I normally play but without being boring ambient stuff. 135bpm and I even recognised some of the records. The sun was shining and it was perfect. Louise danced on stage to the whole thing and my mates (all dying from lack of sleep) were just relaxing out front. Thank you so much to both Chris and Louise for making my Glasto.
I’m not sure quite what happened after that, but I unfortunately never made it back to the rig to play the finale with everyone else of top notch old school. Walked past a couple of times and everyone looked like they were having fun and for the first time they turned the rig up (big environmental issues!) and there was a HUGE crowd out front.
That evening I was off over to Lost Vagueness to watch my flatmate Empress Stah perform her ‘Little Miss Stah’ show in the church, for which she was awarded an official complaint! Then over to the casino where Allen TG was working as a croupier (You MUST be dressed in evening attire in order to gain entry!) Empress Stah showed up here later and performed her static trapeze act over the heads of a most adoring crowd of ball gowns and black ties.
Monday came around all too quickly and Stah needed to leave early in order to be home to perform at the Royal Opera house that night! (Nutter woman) The party backstage at lost vagueness I had a feeling was only just beginning as we all hopped in the van and headed home.
Beautiful weather, fantastic company, (not sure about the bands, not much I really wanted see), the energy 24 rig was fantastic fun and really made me feel welcome, can’t wait until next year. Big love to all that were there especially: Ru, Ilsa, Clare, daf, Sketch, Sarah, Malcolm, Katie, Tim, Lynda, Phil, Steph, Ed, Stah, Allen, David, Naomi, Stix, Chris (Tripmaster) + Louise, Sean (MC Ribbz), Magnus, Dogdoor and everyone else.
