Review – Frantic vs Goodgreef, 11 October 2003

Reported by Els / Submitted 15-10-03 21:56

If you’ve been to Camden Palace before you’ll know that it’s one of those places that starts hard, gets harder and stays hard ‘til 6am. The first thing I noticed when I walked through the tunnel was the little Goodgreef face squinting at me from above the stage and the not-so-empty dance floor. It was just gone 10 and crazy clubbers were already stomping to Alex Kidd’s set. There’s definitely no breaking you in gently at Camden and it’s obviously the same at Goodgreef! You could tell their original resident was aiming to fill the dance floor quickly – and succeeding. Pretty good going for the first hour!

Frantic’s newest resident, Guffy, stepped up to cheers, whistles and the odd horn. The highlight of his set for me was a remix of Little Louis Vega’s French Kiss and the crowd went wild so they obviously agreed! I’ve seen Guffy a few times at Camden now and he never fails to deliver the goods. The poor guy had to make the six hour drive to the Tidy Weekender on Sunday so he zipped off not long after his set.

Phil Reynolds took over the decks at midnight, pumping out some old favourites and a lot of stuff that I didn’t recognise but sounded wicked all the same. Besides being London’s No1 DJ, Phil is also a top bloke. I had a quick chat with him and he reckons the atmosphere at Camden is better than anywhere else. I’m inclined to agree!

Steve Hill wound the crowd up by leaping around to his own remix of Tom Kraft’s ‘Loneliness’. He’s one of those DJs that you can rely on to get you going, even when you think you’re too messy to move. The man gets on the decks and suddenly you’re next to some cyberkid waving your arms in the air!

By the time Rob Tissera came on my feet had had it so I parked my arse on a speaker and watched the master at work. The most amusing part of Rob’s set was the CD jumping and Steve Hill diving on stage to take the piss. All good fun and nice to see they’re only human!
At 4am Uberdruck banged out an hours worth of hardstyle which (if you didn’t already know) is a mix of techno, hard house, hard dance and whatever else he can play to break boundaries. The slowing heartbeat and beeping monitor effect scared the life out of me so I guess Uberdruck had his way as it was definitely very different!

In most clubs I’ve been to the majority of people are on their arses by kicking out time and even though Camden had it’s fair share of battered boys and girls, a swift glance at the dance floor during Shan’s last fifteen minutes showed there was no stopping this lot! Goodgreef’s latest prodigy belted out tune after tune from the new Goodgreef album and didn’t let up ‘til the very end. He didn’t interact with the crowd as much as the other DJs but it didn’t seem to matter, this guy is definitely one to watch.

A combination of London’s finest and Mixmag’s Club of the year 2003 worked wonders. It was a class A night and as far as I’m concerned the Northerners are welcome back any time.

With thanks to badboyz, saTURN & Beam for the use of their photos Thumbs up
