Hardhouse Academy Preview II :: Young Guns :: Lucy Fur

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 22-10-03 18:06

Over the past 5 months Lucy Fur has become one of the most prominent female DJs in the capital. Renown for her unrelenting, pounding track selection and flawless mixing she has been tipped for the top by the likes of Will Frantic & Tara Reynolds. With bookings for a host of Hard Dance events including Peach & Frantic; this weekend will see her debut at the mighty Hard House Academy’s 3rd Birthday. We caught up with her to see how the story was progressing:

HarderFaster: Tell us what style of music you play?

Lucy Fur: I mainly play driving hard house with a harder edge feel to it and Nu Nrg . I have experimented with other types but always come back to the one I love the most. I have also been interested in Techno lately because again I love the energy created from it.

HF: How long have you been playing for and what / who first inspired you to get into DJing?

LF: This is my 3rd year of mixing, but have only really been playing out in London regularly since March of this year. My friends mainly inspired me to start mixing; they always made it look such fun. Then I found myself going out clubbing and watching the likes of Farley and Lashes for hours and thinking I want that to be me- I wanted to be making everyone so happy with what I was playing. It’s the best feeling knowing everyone’s having it to what your are playing!!

HF: What do you consider to have been your first 'big break'?

LF: I think getting involved with TRONIC has been excellent. After that first time I played for them, I knew I wanted to be more involved. After many talks, they gave me my first London residency and it was great to have a regular slot somewhere where people could come and watch me play.

HF: Has it been harder or easier than you thought to get as far as you have? What's the most challenging thing that you've encountered in the industry?

LF: Much easier!!! I only wish I had started promoting myself earlier!! Luckily people take to me very well- I suppose from an outsiders view I am quite likeable!! And my style helps, as there are not that many female DJs that play like I do. But seriously, I’ve always been just me throughout my Djing so far, and I’m not going to change that. I think the most challenging thing is getting a foot in the door. I have spent a lot of my own time and money travelling to clubs, printing off hundreds of cds..etc. but its well worth it in the end.

HF: What has been harder than you expected to achieve in this industry and what's been easier?

LF: Getting actual bookings is quite difficult because not everyone likes my style of music- and yes I know I should variety my style to appeal to all sorts of clubbers and promoters but at the mo I’m having too much fun banging it out!!! I don’t think anything has been that easy yet!!- apart from having fun in what I’m doing.

HF: Is it easier for male or female DJs to succeed currently in the industry? Why do you think this is?

LF: The thing that annoys me the most is when people say to me ‘oh yeah but it helps with you being a girl’ Aaaaahhh. I work just as hard as anybody else to be doing what I’m doing and if that was the case, why aren’t there more of us? I think the novelty of having a ‘female’ DJ to look at is very old fashioned now anyway, as many of us have more than proved how gifted we are.

HF: What can you offer as a 'Young Gun' that other better established DJs can't?
LF: Is this the part where I sell myself?! . I am very much a people person still- and always will be. I will always make time to talk to my fans and stuff- I remember how it used to feel when you spoke to a DJ after a set they have just played- you love that person!!! I am very much into crowd interaction too. Anyone that has seen me already will know I’m not a head down and mix girl when I’m Djing!! People love seeing the DJ having it behind the decks!

HF: What's your personal preference - smooth, clean mixing or cuts and chops between tracks? Why that style?

LF: I love smooth, clean mixing with nice fazing long mixes. In my particular style of mixing, I like the sound to be always driving getting faster and harder.

HF: Which DJ most inspires you in the scene today and why?

LF: There’s so many! I think Tara Reynolds has come such a long way from just being ‘Phil’s wife’ to fully established hard as nails Tara ‘very much her own girl’ Reynolds! Not only is she ace behind the decks but she’s a really nice person. That counts for a lot in my book.

HF: Do you think there is any one thing that really sets you apart from the pack and why?

LF: Not really apart from the fact that I love what I’m doing which reflects in my performances and crowd interaction I’d say.

HF: How important are tricks (cuts, stabs, spin backs, wind backs etc etc) in a DJ set do you think?

LF: I used to mess around loads when I first stated playing out, but I pick my tunes very carefully to keep clubbers entertained without having to chop and cut every 5 minutes now. I don’t think they are that important but sometimes they can sound very effective.

HF: Have you managed to work on any productions yet? If so, what have you done so far and what plans do you have for the future?

LF: Not as yet, have had talks with quite a few production teams but I can’t say anything yet.

HF: Has there been any one person who you think has really helped you and contributed to your success? What did they do for you?

LF: Here comes the cheese, but my boyfriend Mark. He’s been there since I first started playing out and has given me the support and determination I needed to keep it going. I wouldn’t be where I am today if he hadn’t made me get out of bed to go out and meet people or made me do that demo again because it wasn’t up to scratch etc…Most of all he believes in me- that’s really important.

HF: Do you buy more records online or in a real shop these days? Which is your favourite store and why?

LF: I never buy records out of shop these days. I get all my stuff on-line, mostly from Passion Records and Vicious Circle. I always check unknown white labels because they make great one-offs.

HF: Do you see CDs replacing vinyl in the short term?
LF: Not completely but more regularly used. There is a lot of good stuff coming out at the moment and the quickest way to get it is on CD.

HF: What for you has been the best set you have ever played and what made it so good?

LF: That’s such a hard one as I love everyone I do!! I think it still has to be my first one for quite a few reasons. I played at a pub in Herts in Jan 2001, decks were just sprawled across a table in the corner. I was as nervous as hell, but about 10 of my mates that I’d been out with the night before were all behind me going nuts and cheering- it was great. Nothing glamorous, no great venue, just me and my mates!

HF: Do you have anything special lined up for us for this event?

DL: Well, it’s a chance to live up to my reputation for people that haven’t seen me play, so I’m going to bring along some very special tunage to get everyone going.

HF: Which event and where have been the biggest and smallest crowds you've played to this year?

LF: Largest event was a night called Influence in Lincolnshire that I’ve done a few times this year. That holds about 750 people and was a really great buzz, because I could see how much they were enjoying it. The smallest crowd was 2 people!! It was a really hot day and everyone was in the beer garden of George IV in Brixton!! But me and this girl that was going mad on the dance floor, would keep making funny dance movements and faces at each other whilst I was playing- at least she was having a good time.

HF: Name one track in your record box which is going to rip the top off the Academy on Saturday?

LF: Marc Johnson & Testube Babies- Release The Freak (DMF remix).

HF: How important is the internet for promoting yourself as a DJ today?

Crucial, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for that. Harderfaster.net is a clubbing community that I am very happy to be a part of
