The 2003 HarderFaster Awards
Reported by HarderFaster
/
Submitted 03-01-04 18:30
The results for 2003 are in !!! In double quick time this year due to a healthy aversion to leaving the house thanks to New Year's excesses, we bring you the results of our Annual Readers Poll. Now in it's second year, we created the Annual Poll because there was no other poll that truly represented and recognised London's and now the UK's best Hard Dance DJs, clubs, tunes and venues. Ok, enough with the chat... on with the results
HarderFaster Afterparty of the Year 2003
Winner: Twist
What distinguishes a truly great afterparty from merely a good one is when clubbers are prepared to get up at 5am on a Sunday morning to attend having not even been out the night before - behaviour seen at great afterparties from Provocation to Trade and now at Twist. With a strong community of friends attending week in week out providing a great vibe inside the club alongside the transformation of The Viaduct into one of London's best new clubs, Fire and a strong set of residents (especially for an afterparty) completing the picture. Excellent.
2nd Place: Milk
3rd Place: Rush
HarderFaster Album of the Year 2003
Winner: Vicious - Mixed by Andy Farley & Paul Glazby
Vicious Circle come up with the goods again as they win first place in our poll for the second year running. Andy Farley and Paul Glazby lay down a firing mix each of the very hardest stuff in this typically totally uncompromising release from the Vicious Circle crew. Not for the faint hearted.
2nd Place: BK - Klub Kollaborations
3rd Place: Sundissential 3 - Mixed by Nick Rafferty & Ilogik
HarderFaster Club Night of the Year 2003
Winner: Frantic
A great year for the Frantic crew as they repeat last year's success in our Annual Poll with another first place in our Poll this year. Highlights of the year were of course their spectacular Hardhouse Academy events at Brixton Academy and the huge success of the multi-room, multi-promotion event Chemistry at Canvas. New venues, new promoter tie-ups, new lineups, Frantic in 2004 will be something special to look forward to.
2nd Place: Heat
3rd Place: Logic
HarderFaster Day Club of the Year 2003
Winner: Tilt
A brand new category this year and fittingly a brand new club wins it... Tilt has made huge waves this year in clubland as partying in the afternoon goes from strength to strength. Located at sparkling new venue Studio 33, crucially for a day club set up to allow bar room socialising nestled alongside dance floor madness, combined with a great looking crowd with no attitude in sight and an excellent trance based music policy - excellent stuff.
2nd Place: Riot
3rd Place: becomeone
HarderFaster DJ of the Year 2003
Winner: Andy Farley
What can we say about Andy Farley that hasn't been said already? Playing week in week out the length and breadth of the country, he's one of the busiest hard dance DJs in the world and yet consistently pushes the boundaries with his tune selection and set programming. Allied with his technical skills which are second to none and you have unquestionably the King of Hard Dance.
2nd Place: Ian Betts
3rd Place: Paul Glazby
HarderFaster Festival of the Year 2003
Winner: Godskitchen Global Gathering
Despite the informal tag 'Godskitchen Global Mudwrestling' due to the deluge falling on this year's festival, the Global Gathering in 2003 was a huge success with our readership with a mixture of big name trance DJs alongside the Sundissential tent's harder offerings doing the business.
2nd Place: Creamfields
3rd Place: Glastonbury
HarderFaster International DJ of the Year 2003
Winner: Tiesto
No surprises here as the DJ Magazine #1 DJ in the world walks it in this year's Poll. This, in the same year as he played solo for 8 (not 9) hours for 'Tiesto in Concert' in Arnheim, selling out the event a month in advance, something that no other DJ has come close to doing. Unquestionably the world's biggest DJ.
2nd Place: Paul van Dyk
3rd Place: Yoji Biomehanika
HarderFaster Label of the Year 2003
Winner: Vicious
The UK's premier underground hard dance label comes of age in 2003, winning the hearts and minds of a new generation of DJs after the hardest of hard tracks to pound the dancefloor. With seminal hard house monsters like Paul Glazby's hoover driven monster 'Fucking Hostile', a rare release from Ian M. with 'Crazy Pills' and the excellent Defective Audio 'Floorburn' out this year, it seemed everything they released turned to gold. Nice work.
2nd Place: Nukleuz
3rd Place: Tidy
HarderFaster Member of the Year 2003
Winner: Joe Black
Not content with winning 'Message Board Hero' in the inaugurable Hard Dance Awards, the man you love to hate takes first place in our Member of the Year category. Just how do you manage to rack up nearly 11,000 posts in just over a year, Joe? Either a very understanding boss, girlfriend or both, obviously
2nd Place: Latex Zebra
3rd Place: Shaun Rowland
HarderFaster New Club of the Year 2003
Winner: Tilt
The Tilt crew win their second award of the year as best new club in 2003 and it's as richly deserved as the first. Saturday afternoons have never seemed brighter.
2nd Place: Twist
3rd Place: No Limits
HarderFaster New Producer of the Year 2003
Winner: Ali Wilson
Although Ali's been producing for a few year's now, it was in 2003 that he really began to shine. With tracks out on key labels Vicious Circle, Arktik, Honeypot, Freezing Point and Nukleuz, it's been a busy 12 months for him. Rated by Mixmag as one of their 'Future Heroes', Ali's DJ sets have also shone with orginality, drive and enthusiasm this year as his production talents shine through on the dancefloor.
2nd Place: Alex Calver
3rd Place: Dave Lochrie
HarderFaster New Venue of the Year 2003
Winner: Egg
Egg deservedly takes the top spot with it's absolutely stunning interior design - from the moment you walk into this club you know you are somewhere special. Two almost equally sized rooms with plenty of internal features, bar areas and state of the art sound and lighting systems. Also worth a mention is The Loft at the top of the venue which is in our opinion quite simply the nicest club space in London, ideally suited to fat funky house choons. We look forward to spending more time there in 2004.
2nd Place: Studio 33
3rd Place: Fire
HarderFaster Photographer of the Year 2003
Winner: Amy & Anders
Amy and Anders scoop the second of our internal awards as joint photographers of the year. They seemed to be everywhere in 2003, in fact looking back over our photo archives they uploaded an amazing 61 photosets since February of 2003. Great photo quality, lots of shots of all the people you wanted photos of looking nicely mashed, it was all there. Thanks to them both and all our photographers for all their hard work for HarderFaster.
2nd Place: Pink Kitty
3rd Place: Joeyxx
HarderFaster Producer of the Year 2003
Winner: BK
Last year's winner is again this year's poll topper as the mighty BK scoops it once again. This was the year he released his debut solo album, 'Klub Kollaborations', which more than anything else underlined his total preeminence in the scene today. 'Accelerate' with Andy Farley was an absolute dancefloor destroying monster, 'Zulu Nation' and 'Tiptronic' were huge and 'Final Chapter' showed that he could mix it on the hard trance tip as well. Unreal.
2nd Place: Paul Glazby
3rd Place: James Lawson
HarderFaster Remix of the Year 2003
Winner: Ben Johnson 'Come 1' - Nick Sentience Remix
This was the tune that smashed every dancefloor out there with the biggest hands in the air build-up out of a breakdown of 2003. If you didn't dance to this when it came on the sound system you were either deaf, dead or a DJ. Fantastic stuff from Nick Sentience.
2nd Place: Paul Glazby 'Hostile' - Nick Sentience Remix
3rd Place: Binary Finary '1998' - K2 Finary Remix
HarderFaster Remixer of the Year 2003
Winner: Paul Glazby
Some huge remixes this year from Mr Glazby including the excellent remake of Defective Audio's 'Floorburn', his ear-bursting version of the EnergyUK DJs track 'The Beast', Tony de Vit's seminal 'Breathless' and of course '9mm is a Classic'. Great work from the 'Dark Destroyer' of hard dance.
2nd Place: Nick Sentience
3rd Place: James Lawson
HarderFaster Resident DJ of the Year 2003
Winner: Danny Gilligan (Riot)
A huge year for Danny Gilligan as resident at Sunday afternoon superclub Riot. A first vinyl release with Todd Tobias, 'Blow my Mind' on Peroxide, three new collaborations with Ali Wilson and Ingo on CDR receiving serious airtime on the nation's dancefloors and a sparkling new residency at Sunday afterparty Twist. Riot has also gone from strength to strength this year, including being voted number 1 club in the country by Mixmag. GTFRI indeed.
2nd Place: Phil Reynolds (Frantic)
3rd Place: Ian Betts (Knowwhere)
HarderFaster Set of the Year 2003
Winner: Daegal Brain @ Space, Ibiza
For many who attended the Heat trip to the opening parties in Ibiza earlier this year the experience went down as one of the best of their lifetime, for Kiwi DJ Daegal Brain it will definitely remain that way. Rocking the main room at one of the best clubs in the world such that everyone who came back from the trip mentioned it as a highlight - nice!
HarderFaster Tune of the Year 2003
Winner: Paul Glazby - Fucking Hostile
2003 was truly the year of the return of the hoover as Paul Glazby creates the tune that redefined for those who'd forgotten what hard really meant. Searing.
2nd Place: Dahlback & Krome - Murder was the Bass
3rd Place: Ian M. - Crazy Pills
HarderFaster Up and Coming DJ of the Year 2003
Winner: Tin Tin
As head of the Dirty DJs collective, it's been an extremely busy year for DJ and producer Tin Tin. Playing a variety of styles including hard trance, hard house, trance and freeform he's played main and back room gigs for everyone from Frantic to Logic in 2003 and 2004 should be an even bigger year for him and the Dirty Djs crew.
2nd= Place: Gorfy and Simon Rutherford
HarderFaster Venue of the Year 2003
Winner: The Fridge
The Fridge wins it two years on the run - awesome sound and lighting and a vibe when it goes off that is hard to beat. Still the home of hard dance in London and with the forthcoming demise of runner up the Camden Palace it will presumably remain so next year...
2nd Place: Camden Palace
3rd Place: Turnmills
HarderFaster Writer of the Year 2003
Winner: Sharon B
With the kind of detailed and insightful questions that Jeremy Paxman would kill for, Sharon has set the standard for great reading interviews on HarderFaster and she's even started writing event reviews as well. Huge thanks of course are due to anyone who's written for us over the past year - without you the Features section of HF wouldn't exist.
2nd Place: bunny
3rd Place: Tom Allen
OK, that's all for this year. Nothing to see here, just move along. Thank you for reading and to those who voted and of course our congratulations once again to those who won or were placed in our poll. See you next year
