Spiritualised @ The Fortress Studios - 24 Jan 04

Reported by clubchick / Submitted 28-01-04 13:39

It all started round our friend’s dinner table on Saturday night. It was 11pm and we were all bored. Just back from travelling, my fiancé and I were feeling blue Crying (very sad). A few minutes later I shouted ‘Let’s go to Spiritualised’! Everyone looked at me as if I had 2 heads, then with a big smile, everyone ran for their coats….So off we went to Spiritualised!!!Big grin

Do you ever go out on a whim, when it was totally unplanned? These are the best nights! No makeup, didn’t change our clothes (normally takes me 2 hours). We arrived at the Fortress Studios, Old St, around 11.15pm to find a queue. I couldn’t believe it. I’ve never seen it this busy, I was so excited to get inside and see what was happening. I haven’t seen the Spiritualised crew in over 3 months so I wanted to PARTY!

We first went straight to the funky bar. Normally, this is a little quiet but I couldn’t get into the room. It was pumping with some fantastic tunes. I have a feeling it was cause Clodagh was giving it some with her warm up house set. This girl has gone from strength to strength since last year, when she entered a competition that was aired on the well known TV show ‘joy of decks’.

I get very excited and want to see everything, plus we had our 2 friends with us who were very impressed, my man had to take me aside to calm me down. I loved the décor of the funky bar. It was very cosy but a little too hot for me. For such a smaller venue, it has fantastic sound system. The crew did a great job and make the club look different for every party. It was also Clodagh’s sister’s birthday party, so there were big banners up to wish her a happy birthday, which added an ever bigger party effect!

I have to say the atmosphere everywhere on each floor was electric. I’ve never seen it so busy but people were more than happy to have a chat while queuing for the bathroom or the coat room. It was very chilled. My fiancé and I felt very tired so we decided to not focus on the music and spend most of the night chatting with our friends. We also met so many more cool people. These are the nights that you remember, but that didn’t stop us from tuning in every so often to the hard trance room down in the basement. The décor downstairs was dark and mystical with luminous decorations on the ceiling. This room had huge fans to keep us cool.

I missed the beginning of this guys set, Moustapha ban daddy, it was his first appearance at Spiritualised but he surely rocked the house. I didn’t hear any complaints. Our main man, DJ Franky from Brazil played his usual uplifting hard trance & hard house. I’m afraid I don’t have any tune names on this occasion, but I did run from the loo a couple of times to jam to his uplifting vibe. Frankie reads the crowd and knows exactly what we want! A great set was also played by Luke Smith in the main room with his uplifting hard trance & hard house. DJ Chay’s first appearance at Spiritualised didn’t go unnoticed with his driving hard house.

My good buddy Moya damaged her hip at gym so she was sitting most of the night, so I sat & chatted with her. It was so relaxed; people just kept coming over to say hi. I really miss that from bigger clubs. Spiritualised is very much focused on making everyone happy and playing awesome music while having fun!

I was up and down between the two floors all night and both floors were packed with great vibes. The funky bar had Luke Smith, Anya (gets the crowd riled up), Raul Remijo aka DJ Active, from Spain played some tough driving techno house. Craig Gunn from Lunacy with funky house & breaks, DJ Paulo b2b The Saint, these 2 South African boys jammed with a mixture of old house classics & funk. I was impressed. I normally just stay in the hard house floor but loved the dj’s in the funky bar. There was great energy but with individual styles.

After attending to my friend (she was seeing spiders on the wall and thought I had 3 eyes… don’t ask Messy), I had to see my old buddy, DJ Clodagh. She played on both floors, but downstairs she rocked with some powerful uplifting hard trance, tribal latino techno (yummy) Yum !, hard trance, acid techno & then to finish some more uplifting trance. A few of the tunes she let rip, ‘capeoira’ by iiian kriger & DJ ANT on BR909, ‘One night in Hackney’ by Chris Liberator & Dave the drummer on SUF.

I love Clodagh’s style now as she’s developed so much in 3 months since I last saw her. I love the fact she’s not afraid to mix & match and put together what SHE likes. It works beautifully.Wink

Last but by no means least, I have to mention DJ Nacho. I love his new style, whatever your doing Nacho, keep it up. You definitely made me jump up from my seat with your acid techno and uplifting hard trance. It highlights your FUN personality. This was the last set of the night and it was just superb!Spin

All I can say and I speak for the 4 of us that made it to Spiritualised, if you want some fun, meet some fantastic people, and hear some great sounds, then make it to the next Spiritualised. Valentine’s Ball @ Electrowerkz on Friday 20 Feb! Cheers to the Spiritualised Crew, glad to see your party is still the friendliest in town!

Thanks to Nexogy for use of the pics! U captured the spirit of the night!Waves
