Foreplay Gets Hot @ the Glasshouse

There were several things about this night that made an impression on me. Firstly the venue itself… The Glasshouse is actually par of the Mermaid Theatre and overlooks the Themes and out onto the Tate Modern. For a girl used to clubbing with views onto Darling and Sydney Harbours it was wonderful to get out of subterranean venues and to have a view as I danced in the ‘Furnace Room’.
The fake ‘fires’ were a pretty touch too, but I suspect the fans needed to run them in fact cooled the room down a bit much and made people reluctant to stay long. A shame if you ask me, ‘cause Richard Launch (22-23:00) was finishing off a fun set as I arrived and Phil Able (23-0:00) and Brendan Currie (0-1:00 played some fun trance and house- punters just seemed not to like the space a lot.
The Braai on the other hand was Lekker! And I’m sure all the South Africans in London were at this particular Braai! This was really surprise number 2 for me ‘cause I’ve not, to date, had a real idea of how many South Africans live here, what their preferred forms of dance music are and so on. I managed not to be ‘donnered with a sharp klup’ for my ignorance and I really got into his harder breed of hose and trance as Gerhard (23-0:00) and Shaf De Bass (0-1:15) cranked it up.
The Braai was not only darker, hotter and had no windows, but then a fire twirler put on a show! Being short you’d think I’d have been grateful to people for moving me to the front to see better- but in actual fact I’d been hiding just in case said fire-twirler slipped up and let the burning things on chains slip free into the audience as they spun.
What brought me (and the majority of the other clubbers) back into the Furnace was Tom Allen’s set ( 1:00-2:00) but unfortunately Ke (2-3:00) and Paul Henry 2-3:0 and Donna Birt (4-5:00) came off a bit the worse for the location where Macey (1:15-2:15), Paulie (2:15-3:30)and Danny Gilligan 3:30-4:30) had a better time of it.. Perhaps clubbers are more like Hobbitts, Dwarves and Wombles than any of us previously suspected and if they’re not packed into small, hot window-less rooms they just can’t be happy?!
This was a fun night, with good, energetic music, populated by some really cool people, who were lucid enough to have a good chat to, and given the chance I’d go again!

From: Waynes World on 16th Feb 2004 20:11.25 Thanks to Donna and Danny for their impromptu back2back set, to round off the evening with an appropriate dose of fire!!
Thank you also Calanth for your positive review, in response to your 'surprises about the night'-we are struck time and time again by how up-for-it and friendly the crowd is. We are getting a reputation for it!! We have a very commited South-African following, but by no means exclusively so....it all makes for a very energetic, vibrant and fresh atmosphere, with the 'welcome' attached to a private party.
We look forward to catching you at the next Foreplay Elements Party. Because you deserve more Foreplay!!
