Simon Rutherford & Zana Mills Tour Diary Pt. I
Reported by TD
/
Submitted 24-02-04 11:00
Leaving behind the gleaming white streets of London (2 days after it snowed!) for the sunny hills of LA was not something we had any real problem doing. In fact we’ve agreed we’re more than happy to do it as often as possible from now on. This place is cool, and with thanks to Andrew Innes and Craig Brennon Robin (CBR) of FevahUSA, Hard Dance is making a serious name for itself and gaining popularity more and more every week right across the States.
Part 1 - USA
L.A.
Hollywood!
Landing in LA on Thursday 28th Jan we made our way straight to our Hotel and crashed big style… at 7:30pm! Gotta love jetlag. Unfortunately though, going to sleep so early meant an even earlier rise, and we were up and at it by 6am on Friday. Not ideal when we were due to play late that night, but hey, we were never expecting this to be easy!
We met with Andrew, CBR and Andrew’s lovely girlfriend Lisa around 6pm and got a quick guided tour of Hollywood checking out Sunset Blvd, Rodeo Dve, Santa Monica Blvd, Melrose Ave, the Viper Room etc etc before heading out to a friend of Andrews for a feed and a chance to prepare for the big night. Getting to the club at 11:30pm we were greeted by a pretty serious line out front and an even bigger crowd inside. Impressive considering the place is open till 7am! In the FevahUSA hosted main room the warm-up DJ was edging people towards the dance floor with an interesting but effective mix of House, Drum n Bass, Breaks and Trance before passing things over to Andrew & CBR at about 12:30am.
Andrew Innes & CBR
Following on with the Trance theme initially, the guys worked well together and instantly broke down any inhibitions the crowd had with their boisterous interaction and energy behind the decks. These guys showed that they were here to party, and within a few tunes they had the floor almost full and the place was rocking. Mid-way through their set the dancers employed to ‘entertain’ the clubbers made their way to the podiums either side of the DJ booth and began to strut their stuff. Being typical ‘LA girls’ and wearing very little indeed, they had absolutely no problem keeping the clubbers and army of photographers amused with an array of pretty interesting moves (to say the least) alongside some pretty god-awful ones I’m sure their mothers would be proud of too. We were in Hollywood after all!
Dancers at Club Naked
Progressing from Trance to Hard Trance and Hard House, Andrew and CBR had everybody well primed for the headlining act of the night – Zana Mills. At 2am she took to the decks with her chunky, groovy Hard House and as the bass line dropped in on Rundell & Maddox’s “Everybody’s Hardcore” the floor shook, a roar filled the room, and the mood was instantly set for the next two hours. Luckily, holding the attention of the crowd from the near-naked stage dancers wasn’t a problem as she worked her cheeky & sexy crowd interaction with tunes such as “Aint it Funky” by Bunter & Jon Doe and the massively popular “Groovin” by Nick Rafferty & PBS to keep everybody focused. Tossing out a box-full of free T-shirts, sweaters and cap’s courtesy of Fevah's sponsor ‘Porn Star’ also attracted hoards of hungry clubbers towards the front of the stage to jostle for a piece of free kit, and stepped up the excitement of the room just that little bit more. Getting caught in the moment, Zana even managed to jump out on one of the podiums on the stage herself to shake her ass to Rachel Auburn’s “Kick”! You should have heard the cheer!!! Just awesome!
Crowd at Club Naked
Following Zana’s demolition of the dance floor Simon Rutherford came on to progress into a more UK Hard Trance sound by airing some awesome current and future anthems by names such as Rowland & Wright, Reynolds and Lawson as well as getting the chance to test several of his own productions on the Americans, each going down a treat. Again his crowd interaction proved popular in keeping the crowds attention and the floor stayed rammed to the end of his set, something which was obviously received well as he stepped down grinning ear to ear.
The Fevah Boys came back on and toughened things up even more with numerous amazing future Fevah releases and some pretty impressive tricks on CBR’s laptop to finish the night off nicely. Looking down on the DJs from the balcony above the mixer’s beat counter flashed a racy 151bpm – something Londoner’s would find the norm, but something we were told wouldn’t be accepted in LA. I guess they were wrong.
Happily, there wasn’t a single stage of the night that the dance floor in the main room emptied, and nothing but admiration and approval was received from the happy and energetic crowd. We were more than pleased to hear the following week that it was in fact the most successful night in the club’s history, with over 3,400 people through the door and the most people still on the dance floor at 7am that they’ve ever seen. Something I’m sure the Fevah boys would be very proud of, and something we’re very happy to have been a part of.
San Diego
A very jetlagged weekend and a few very mad days in Vegas driving around on the wrong side of the road later and it was time for the next FevahUSA event at L5 in San Diego. Getting up at a ridiculous 7am on a Friday (this was never going to be a holiday!) we headed out to pick up Andrew at the airport before making our way down to L5 for décor preparation and sound checks. A few hours and one spiffy looking club later and it was off for a feed and a scrub before hitting the town again.
Arriving at L5 around midnight we were instantly escorted to the exclusive VIP area, handed a wad of free drink vouchers and introduced to the Manager and his friends. Looking around the luxurious club with it’s leather upholstery, roped-off exclusive area’s, funky artwork across the walls and patrons dressed to the nine’s a feeling of apprehension took hold as it appeared we were in a scene more associated to an upmarket VIP Bar in London than a Hard Dance event.
Warming up the already ¾ full FevahUSA hosted main room were a duo called Deep Sky who played a funky b2b House set for an hour or so before kicking off their live act of Uplifting Trance. Following on from them Andrew continued the Trance theme with the original “Reincarnations” and K90’s “Colours 2001”, then progressed gradually by pace and style until it was time for Zana Mills to take control again.
Zana Mills playing in San Diego
Beginning with K90’s floor-filling remix of “Escalation”, within a few tunes she’d moved on smoothly to her trademark groovy sound and yet again had the crowd in the palms of her hands. Crowd interaction has proved to be very big with the Americans and the reactions are huge. Jumping around clapping and cheering to the crowd sends them nuts, and that’s exactly what she did time and time again – with help from the endless stream of free tequila from the bar no doubt! By 2am the energy of the main room was at fever pitch and as Andrew stepped forward to pass out a pile of mixed cds courtesy of Zana and Simon he was all but dragged off stage ankles first by the dozens of eager supporters each throwing caution (and self well-being) into the wind to score a piece of the action.
Stepping down from the decks after a few hours, a mob of men and women gathered for a piece of the lady of the moment as autographs were signed and business cards handed out with the promise of a mixed cd in the post. These people weren’t about to take no for an answer, that’s for sure! The spirit of the crowd continued through to 4am as Andrew took his place back up behind the decks stepping up the pace and intensity more and more until it was time to call it a night. For the hundreds still filling the dance floor, the 4am close was all to premature. On to the after-party we go…
The Bacchus House – San Diego
After a night successful enough to secure FevahUSA a monthly residency at the lavish surroundings of L5, we followed some local clubbers back to Jason’s house (one of the locals) high up on the hills of San Diego that sported a view of the ocean and Mexico which could only be described as phenomenal. Not only was the view amazing, but it had possibly THE squishiest carpet you’ve ever felt, the biggest f-off television you’ve ever seen (I think they said it was a 62inch wide-screen!!!), and some of the most hospitable and friendly occupants you’re likely to meet. Here we were greeted with alcohol, soft drink, water, food, lollipops, gum, fantastic company, and just about anything else you could imagine - the perfect place to kill a few hours. Superb!
Reluctant to leave such cosy surroundings, we were escorted to the ‘after-hours’ club Bacchus House at around 6am. The dark, funky little venue was predominantly a gay club at night, but by morning it was more of a mixed crowd there to enjoy the eclectic mix of Drum n Bass, Breaks and House…but not Hard House. After chatting with the lovely promoter Mel for a few hours we managed to convince her to give Zana control of the decks for a while and show them what she had to offer. Having never heard Hard House played in her club before there was a sense of hesitation, but that soon dispersed as the crowd erupted much like those at L5 and Club Naked previously. With uncertainty gone, Zana played the crowd as she did the night before and had all but a few bums off seats and filling the dance floor. Keeping it short and sweet she handed over control back to the three club residents who dropped it back a notch and funked it up with some chunky Breaks for the final few hours.
We left the club a little before midday and wrapped up our stay in the States with a couple more hours chilling out back at Jason’s house before one nightmare drive back to LA to fly out to Fiji... well and truly broken!
Simon Rutherford on the decks
From all accounts it’s pretty obvious the popularity of Hard Dance is rising massively right across the States. Before playing in LA and San Diego we were warned that the Americans didn’t like music too hard or much faster than about 140bpm, but going by the reactions and praises from the thousands that we played to (at speeds of up to 153bpm) this was certainly not the case. It was more a matter of the majority of them not having heard music like ours before, and now that they have they love it and want more. The US is a big place, and the guys at FevahUSA are doing a magnificent job of taking the UK Hard Dance sound to the masses through events such as these at Naked and L5, and through the Fevah record label. Events that are guaranteed to continue based on the success of these past two weeks, and are sure to grow in popularity - something which can only be seen as a very positive and exciting move for our scene.
