Hardware Relaunch: The Residents Interview

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 20-04-04 15:30

Within all too short a space of time Hardware has established itself as one of the capital's most up front and kicking afterparties, drawing the capital's clubbers down to original home The Office in droves. Now relocating and relaunching at The Soundshaft on Sunday 25th April the new residents Donna Birt, Richard Launch, Shaf de Bass and The Prophet give you their take on why Hardware should replace your bed on a Sunday morning...

What do you feel you can bring to Hardware that no other DJ can?

Donna Birt: To be honest I feel that every DJ brings something to their sets that no-one else does, if this weren’t the case there would be one DJ doing the round of every club in London (like Farley’s omnipresence :-). We are all diverse, play a range of styles and have our own kind of energy. To find out what it is that I bring to my sets... you’ll just have to get down on the dancefloor, front and centre!

The Prophet: I have a very distinctive style and I’m not afraid to push the limits. I’ll always give the crowd something to remember. Not to remember me by, but to remember the whole weekend by. The crowd, at any event are special and I like to make them feel that way.

Donna Birt

How do you feel Hardware differs from other afterparties?

Richard Launch: Hardware differs from other after parties because you get to see the best new comer DJ's rubbing shoulders with the legend's of the scene like Phil or BK. Another factor that sets Hardware apart is the fact that you won't get the same music style week in week out. The DJ line-up varies greatly each week and it is something that I think is vital for an after party.

Shaf de Bass: Hardware has a very unique crowd that attend. I usually see the same faces with a few new add ons every week. The 4 residents have been carefully chosen and each have a very unique style which will very soon fuse a sound for the party itself. Another point is that the residents are very familiar and are friends with most the crowd, meaning that if any little detail is not perfect, it won’t take long to sort out.

Why would you tell clubbers to come to the relaunch of Hardware after timeless and not go home and sleep?

Richard Launch: The cosy confines of the Soundshaft would be perfect to carry-on at after a hard night out. Chill-out and relax a bit with your mates or new faces before getting stuck into some decent tunes..! It will go off...!!

Shaf de Bass: The line up and the reputation of the party speak for themselves really. Add to this the memories of Farenhite @ The Soundshaft and I can see a very special Sunday morning developing.. why risk not being a part of clubbing history?

Richard Launch

How do your after hours sets differ from your normal sets?

The Prophet: There is a lot more crowd reading going on. I’ve got to play my music my way, but I tend to go almost totally with the crowd at an "After Hours Set". I figure out what they want and can handle and them let ‘em have it.

Donna Birt: Well you have to take into account the fact that in all probability people have been out all night at other Hard Dance venues (perhaps even all weekend). When I enter a morning after party the last thing I want to hear is the same thing I have been hearing all weekend. I look at the line-up, see who else is playing and from there think about what I am going to play. I will just see what works on the day; read the crowd and if something isn’t working, change it.

Hardware has become known for always having a classics hour at the beginning of each Sunday - What tune would you pull out of the bag and why?

The Prophet: Born Slippy (Remix)
Donna Birt: ‘I know a place’ Weirdo & ‘Discotech’ Nick Sentience
Shaf de Bass: System F ‘Out of the blue’ & Nudge & Shouter ‘Blue Lagoon’
Richard Launch: James Lawson - Energise & Andy Farley - Connected

Shaf de Bass

Who would you like to see play at Hardware who hasn't already?

Donna Birt: I’m really impressed with what Ingo is doing at the moment... his production is superb and unfortunately I missed a recent set of his in London which was apparently incredible... gutted! He plays with a techy edge but his music is quite unique and there’s always something happening to keep the interest there! I would definitely love to see Ingo at Hardware in the future.

Shaf de Bass: Seeing as it’s at The Soundshaft I’d like to see Owen B, Matt Clarke, Raymondo & Blakey back there. Am also looking forward to seeing more djs playing here from outside of London such as Ben Stevens and Daley.

What has been your most enjoyable set at Hardware so far?

The Prophet: My first. The atmosphere almost knocked me over like a tidal wave. I can’t thank everyone there enough for the support and the sore feet, aching muscles, blisters, sweat, hyperventilation and all the other dance related ailments you all contracted during the set. Trust me, I heard al about it.

Donna Birt: It would have to be the set I played after Frantic vs Wildchild at Deepblue SE1. The music had predominantly been quite trancy throughout the morning so I decided to toughen it up a bit and played a mixture of hard house and techno with a groovy funky edge. I had a ball and got the opportunity to play some of those tougher tunes that I don’t normally

The Prophet

What has been your strangest after hours experience?

Richard Launch: I was at the Fridge Bar two years ago after an Xstatic at the Fridge, and there was a small oriental man doing head-stands against the wall and doing tai chi on the dancefloor. How's that for strange...????

The Prophet: Not many strange ones, though I was out partying hard all weekend and played out the Sunday evening. I was quite knackered, but well up for the set. I had my blinkers (cap) on and for a period got my head right down into the mixing. My brain totally left the building and I thought I was mixing at home at home. I finally looked up after a while and jumped out of my skin. A heavy shiver ran down my whole body. Where the f*** did all these people come from? Where the f*** am I? Total shock, but it was funny and didn’t go un-noticed. It also happens to be one of the best sets I ever played.

Shaf de Bass: Haha... probably a few years back at The Fridge Bar after an amazing night at Samsara. I could swear this random bird had stickers on her face so thought I’d help out by peeling them off for her - of course nothing was there and I was just picking at her face...hahaha...after a glass of water and a little reassuring chat from her we actually because really good friends after.

Who are you looking forward to seeing play at Hardware in the up & coming Hardwares?

Richard Launch: I'm looking forward to see Tara Reynolds rock it at the Fridge...!

Donna Birt: There are a few dj’s that I haven’t yet had the opportunity to see play. Andy Whitby – a dj just recently signed to Nukleuz, Ben Stevens and of course The Prophet who is another fellow resident. To be perfectly honest the line-ups look wicked... I’m looking forward to them all.
