Wildchild vs GoodGreef - The Interview

Reported by Wild Angel / Submitted 27-06-04 18:18

Northern stars Goodgreef have made their name putting on club busting parties boasting some of the hottest residents in hard dance, with Eddie Halliwell, Alex Kidd and Shan making their names at the club. With the recent release of the Goodgreef Album Two with Alex Kidd and Rob Tissera on mixing duties the crew celebrate by bringing their brand of party madness down to London for WiLDCHiLD Vs Goodgreef + Riot at Heaven on Friday 2nd July. Wild Angel has a few words with promoters Barry and Ben...

Can you tell us a little bit about how and when Goodgreef was founded, and who the key people are behind the promotion?

It started in September 2000 after putting on a party for my clubbing friends and young DJ mates. The key people behind Goodgreef are my business partner & cousin Ben, Promotion whiz kid Spiky Steve & Taz Hussain to name but a few.

How did you come up with the name?

Ben and his good friend (our designer Neil) came up with the name as it is humorous and a figure of speech that people use, therefore can attract attention, as does our infamous easily identifiable yellow & black logo ‘Mr Goodgreef'.

You take control of a few different clubs in the North at different times of the month. Can you tell us where and when we can expect to see you showcasing the delights of Goodgreef?

Last Saturday of the month at Philips Park Hall in Manchester, 3rd Saturday of the month at Tall Trees in Yarm and our soon to launch monthly on the 1st Friday in Leeds. We also promote special events with our good friends Promise called Come Together at some of the North’s largest and most spectacular venues such as Majestyk in Leeds, Ikon & Tuxedo Princess in Newcastle.

You focus quite heavily on building new DJ’s through the promotion, Eddie Halliwell being the most prolific. Was this something you set out to do from the start?

Yes, since our parties were originally based around my good friend Alex Kidd & Eddie Halliwell and then introduction of new residents Shan & Adam Sheridan. We wanted to provide a different party rather than relying on the same big name DJ’s to fill our venues all the time.

Alex Kidd, Shan, Gaz West (aka Dark By Design) and Barry Connell are some of the talents you’re really pushing at the moment. How did you come across these guys and discover their potential?

They are all good friends of mine & Barry Connell was discovered by Simon & Eddie Halliwell. Like all the Goodgreef DJ’s they are unique in style & sound and all very talented and versatile.

You also run the DJ Agency, PFA. Where did the idea for this come from, and how long has it been running?

It's only been running for 6 months. The idea came about to try and disassociate our DJ’s from Goodgreef so that it would not burden them getting gigs as most DJ Promoters use Goodgreef as a tool to try and get bookings at our club in exchange with booking our DJ’s. However all our DJ’s are Mixmag Future Heroes and play at all the major clubs in the UK for a reason, because they are talented, affordable, pleasant and versatile. PFA means ‘Promoter Friendly Agency’ which is they way we want to operate as we know the all the bad points of DJ agents and what puts off promoters so we adopt a No Booking Fee or Deposit policy to help the promoter out. It has certainly worked so far as all our DJ’s are almost fully booked in 2004.

Can you tell us what DJ’s you’re currently representing on the agency at the moment?

Adam Sheridan, Shan & Alex Kidd + our newest edition Barry Connell.

Apart from Goodgreef, where can we see the young talents of these DJ’s shine?

Adam Sheridan – Passion, Gatecrasher, Slinky, Inside Out, Garlands, Godskitchen, Gallery London, Koolwaters, Escape Wales & many more.

Shan – Garlands, Godskitchen/Polysexual Frantic, Wildchild, Slinky, Inside Out, ROAR, Tidy Magna & Weekender, Parlez-Vous, Scream & many more.

Alex Kidd – Inside Out, Dance Academy, Tranzactions, Bionic, Slinky, Polysexual, Tidy Magna, HQ Amsterdam to name but a few.

‘Goodgreef Album Two’ has recently been released. Can you tell us a little bit about this album and how it compares to your first release ‘Goodgreef Debut Album’?

Album 2 is different to that of the Debut album as Rob Tissera mixes CD 2. This is a full on hard dance mix, representing a peak time sound at Goodgreef, while CD 2 is a journey through tech trance, techno & hard trance on one mix, all to showcase the sounds of our residents.

You’ve also just launched ‘Goodgreef Recordings’ with two stomping tracks ‘Anne Savage ‘Psycout’ and Dark By Design ‘Blackout’. What has the response been like for the new release and what are your plans for the future?

GGR01 has had a great response and has been an anthem on the GG dance floor for ages. The new release has been eagerly anticipated and is gong to be a massive track across club land. ‘Severe Punishment’ was featured on Lisa Lashes Euphoria Album and Eddie Halliwell’s Radio 1 Essential Mix.

You’ll be bringing your northern antics to London soon, for WiLDCHiLD Vs Goodgreef @ Heaven on Friday 2 July. How did this collaboration come about and what do you know about WiLDCHiLD?

Ben & I have known Reece for a couple of years through clubbing in Ibiza together. We have watched Wildchild grow to become amongst the leading nights in London. The time is right to do a massive party with the Wildchild Motherfuckers!!

You have some of your top jocks representing Goodgreef at this ‘North Meets South Soundclash’. What can we expect to hear from them and what are their trademark sounds?

Alex Kidd will play dance floor destroying Hard Trance & Hardstyle ‘the trademark Dark by Design sound’. Shan is uplifting and techy, Barry Connell is full on & energetic. These guys have presence and skill in the way they work the mixer and flow of their set. Burgs, Morgan & Big Ben are young DJ’s in the Soundshaft to watch out for.

What’s on the horizon for Goodgreef in 2004? Any major events we should know about – come on you can tell us!!

Our 1st Dance Weekender with Promise called ‘Come Together’ which will feature some of the world’s leading DJ’s across many musical genres and features the hottest clubbing brands & media partners from Ibiza & the UK. It is 12/13/14 November and will also feature some of Wildchild’s favourite guests.

Last but not least… Do you have any outrageous Promoter-esque stories you can tell us about – or do you lead the quite life?? We promise, whatever you tell us, won’t go any further, he he!!!

I lead a typically quite promoter lifestyle.
