Wildchild: Battle of the South Part 2... Reviewed

I love Heaven. Not because of the exciting, atmospheric space. Not because of the varied music policy. Not even because I can get a nightbus right outside all the way to my house. No. I love Heaven because it’s full of gorgeous, smooth-chested men with their tops off. Ok so they’re all gay, but I’m practically married anyway, and I can always dream.
With a grand total of 45 (yes, that’s 45) DJs on the billing at Wildchild, it would have been impossible to hear them all. In the end, I don’t know how many there actually were – the line-ups changed pretty drastically – but the best sets of the night were from JFK and Brisky in the trance room, Lisa Pin-Up in the Star Bar, and Paul Divine in The Soundshaft. Funnily enough, although I seem to be leaning towards the euphoric and uplifting in my old age, no room was quite as bonkers hard as I expected. It seems to be a general trend that the line between trance and hard dance is becoming progressively more blurred.
Adorable JFK (just look at his cheeky little face!) played a chunky, bouncy set featuring such classics as Sensation – ‘The Anthem 2004’, ravey ‘Energise’ from Nick Lunn & Yomc, and Ferry’s melodramatic ‘It’s Time’. Equally charming was Rob Tissera, who pretended not to mind when I bounded up and kissed him like I’d known him all my life. I never learn. I didn’t hear him play as I actually took my lazy ass home before he clocked on, but I’m sure he did a fine job.
I’m afraid that’s all the detail I have, as I spent an inordinate amount of time on the lovely comfy sofas in the Dakota Bar. The only bum note was the crosspatch security who yelled at me for putting my feet on the seat for like, two seconds. There’s some seriously militant people working at Heaven.
Bit of a problem in that the place wasn’t exactly full. In the days leading up to the event, websites were full of dire warnings – all early bird tickets sold out… only 150 tickets left from selected outlets. Well, they might have sold a lot of tickets, but they had a lot of room to fill. Both The Soundshaft and The Departure Lounge – the VIP room, were open to everyone, and that is a lot of space. There were never more than about fifteen people in The Soundshaft, and that’s a shame, because it’s a great venue.
I do love the crowd at a hard dance event – skinny girls in bras and fluffy boots, guys with luminous hair and trousers the size of a double duvet, and a lot of very, very f*cked people. That’s what I like to see – a bit of dedication, sadly lacking in young people these days. Everybody was having a fantastic time anyway, and that's what counts. All the club dancers were cool as well, and my deepest apologies to the guy I slapped on the ass… if it had been a guy slapping a girl, there would’ve been hell to pay.
Trance lovers in London are absolutely spoilt for choice at the moment, with the capital full to bursting with quality nights. I could go out twice over pretty much every weekend, although of course this would eventually kill me. The summer might be over, but winter’s looking pretty good. Make sure you’re part of it.
