TOXIK The Launch - Preview to the Opening Night

Reported by Steve Milton / Submitted 06-10-04 17:16

How many of you out there have ever toyed with the idea of promoting your own night? I know I have and I’d put a considerable amount of money on betting that’s there a fair few even reading this who’s minds have wandered into the realm of promotions. But lets be honest with ourselves here, to most it’s only ever likely to be a pipedream. So when the TOXIK crew, ably lead by Lee-Ann and Guy Schmidt approached me with regards to this article I was intrigued to find out why they thought there would be enough room for another hard dance party in the capital, and what would make it stand out from all the others.

On the 15th October TOXIK becomes a reality at none other than the famous Heaven nightclub in the heart of London town. For a brand new promotion starting small (for them) obviously isn’t the way to go and filling Heaven is no minor undertaking. Initially I had my doubts as to whether this would be a shrewd move or not yet the confidence and enthusiasm shown by the team along with the promised high production values convinced that the road they had taken would be the right one. If you add to this a line-up that includes the mighty BK headlining with a two hour set and one of the most outlandish and individual live PA’s on scene at the moment – Nüw Idol, then I’m sure the night won’t be that easily forgotten. Getting the right balance for the night’s entertainment is one that needs very careful consideration. A bias leaning too heavily towards one type of music style can lead to a slightly monotonous evening, variation is the key and although Toxik will certainly be at the harder end of things it’s certainly not going to be road drill BPM’s all night.

The TOXIK crew explain: “ Our choice or DJ’s and PA’s for the night came about so we could get a good feel throughout and offer something that was both up front yet still had the individualism we were after. All our residents and guests have a very distinctive style to what they do yet maintain the ability to mesh with each other well and with any luck this will help us with the continuity of the event.”

The TOXIK residents include El Greko, Zana Mills and Jana . Zana Mills echoes the above sentiment: "Being part of a brand new promotion is always exciting and playing the first set of the first night in the main room I plan to kick things off with a sexy, groovy blend of hard house and techno to get people in the mood. Keepings things slow and cheeky means I'll be leaving the DJs following plenty of scope for a smooth progression throughout the night".

But its not only the music that’ll be grabbing the attention. The TOXIK crew are promising the clubbers not only aural but also visual stimulation. For the opening night only Elvis and Grob the apparently fun loving UV aliens make an appearance and take you on a journey of spinning spirals and mind-bending patterns and that’s just for starters. If the alternate reality of the space manta ray, Slinky the flying serpent and the ethereal jelly fish appeals to your senses then this really could be the event for you. Such shenanigans are rarely seen alongside the usual attractions of the club scene these days and I for one am looking forward to seeing something a little different.

A bonus to the nights proceedings is the chance to win a UDG record bag along with a host of tunes from the artists on the night, definitely a prize worth winning for all of you who fancy yourselves as budding superstar DJ’s and for those that don’t there’ll also be shed loads of CD giveaways.

One final word from the promotions team: .“Our main aim is to create a fun and friendly atmosphere and enjoyment for the people attending. We’re clubbers ourselves so will hopefully know what’s the best way to create that feel. We’re also open to suggestions as communication between the clubber and promoter is paramount to future success. We truly hope this will be the start of something we can all be proud of. Seeing a thousand people with smiling faces having a great time, dancing the night away is all the incentive we need.”

Well, they say the proof in the pudding is in the eating, but if the ingredients are anything to go by then I’m sure Jamie Oliver himself will be happy with the outcome. I for one will certainly be there and finding out for myself if whether or not a dose of Toxik will be more of a tonic.
