The votes have been counted in this year’s DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll and already debating is raging as to who has cut the mustard this year. I dragged editor Lesley Wright out of the office – in the middle of compiling the hotly awaited Top 100 issue – to try and weedle some inside info from her before the big event.
Armin Van Buuren
Why did you start the Top 100 poll?
It was started before my time at the magazine and the very first Top 100 poll was decided by the staff at the magazine at the time, it had people in there like Steve Wright and some other dodgy radio jocks which shows you how far djing has progressed. Later it was opened to the public vote and then with the introduction of internet voting it really took off. Each year we are astounded with how many votes we receive from all around the globe.
Who got your vote this year?
I based my votes on who’s really rocked my world in the past 12 months. But if I told you there would be so many djs who wouldn’t speak to me!
What makes a Top 100 DJ?
Basically it’s a popularity vote but people are voting for djs who have made a lasting impression on them recently, this year there are several djs in the poll who may not be known to clubbers in the UK but are ripping it up in other parts of the world.
The run up to the top 100 is obviously one of your busiest times of the year, but with the little spare time you do get, where can we find you out partying?
In the run up to the Top 100 party I actually try to detox and take it easy for at least ooh…2 weeks. It’s a struggle!! The Top 100 party (and after party) is such a monster it kicks the sh*t out of me and all the DJ Mag crew!
Stanton Warriors
What is the best thing about being editor of DJ Mag?
Everything, it’s like being on the biggest, most thrilling, and enjoyable rollercoaster in the world with the most incredible sound track to match, I f*cking love it!
What surprises have we got in store for this year’s top 100 result?
Two new entries in the top ten, something like 12 or 15 new entries (I think - its late!) a couple of shockers! Some djs will be elated, others will need a tissue.
Many djs claim their position in the poll doesn’t matter but its so bloody well does. We’ve had djs try to bribe us, can you believe it! The poll really has taken on a life of its own and it’s the benchmark many foreign promoters use when booking djs.
So who is the unlucky member of staff that gets to count the votes?
Not me - thank f*ck! This year we have received over 91400 votes , they are counted by our chart compiler, Gordon Knott down in Brighton. This year he took on 6 extra people to help him.
With a record number of votes this year, how far afield have you seen the cast from?
From over 120 countries – places I didn’t even know existed. Geography was never a strong point!
Atomic Hooligan
What is currently playing on your CD player in the office?
Terry Farley and Stuart Patterson’s new “Faith” compilation on NRK is on heavy rotation
Soul of Man’s “Y4K” compilation on Distinctive, the reissued Renaissance mix from Sasha and Digweed and the new Soma EP, plus sh*t loads more. The good thing about having to work late during the top 100 issue is that there is plenty of time to put good music on the stereo. If it wasn’t for the music I’d be going crazy by now.
Why should people come to your top 100 party?
Because it f*cking rocks! The line up this year is wicked with something to suit all tastes. And you’ll see the DJ Mag crew make complete tits of themselves.
The Top 100 DJs will be revealed at the SEOne club, London bridge, SE1, on Thursday 28th October. Free entry from 9pm until 10pm / £5 after. Lesley will write you a sick note on request.
