Scot Project Album Launch Preview: Interview with S.H.O.K.K Reported by Annabel / Submitted 18-10-04 12:15 Being signed to a record label, topping DJ store sales charts and having your tunes played by Paul Van Dyk is many an aspiring 18 year old dj’s dream. This is what happened to now 22 year old Swiss DJ Claudio Pettanice who plays under the name S.H.O.K.K. In 2000 aged just 18 he was signed to Frankfurt label ‘Overdose’ along with his production partner Marco Guardia (a.k.a Reverb), who was a fresh-faced 17 year old. In the same year they produced “The Art of Knowledge" and “Folie a Deux” and they immediately received massive support from top DJs worldwide. Since then the hard trance DJ has played at all over the world for legendary clubs including Gatecrasher, Slinky, Godskitchen, Dance Valley, Tidy Weekender, Passion and for his residency at OXA in Zurich. Claudio has also been the brains massive remixes such as Cosmic Gate’s “Back To Earth” and Signum’s “Coming on Strong”. Let’s see what Claudio has to say about DJing at The Fridge and the scene Switzerland. You’ve DJed internationally all over the world, from Australia to South Africa, to all over Europe. Do you have a favourite place to play? Every place has its own particular things which I like. I've had great clubbing nights all over the world and I found a lot of friends, and that's worth a lot more than any amount of money. Personally my gigs in South Africa and Australia were something special for me. I'm interested a lot in different cultures, international cuisine and politics. For club nights I'm always on nails when I play in the UK. It's something extraordinary every time I’m back there. It's like when you watch football live or on TV the atmosphere in an English stadium is unique and different to other European countries, and in my opinion it's the same when it comes to club atmospheres. For big events with over 5'000 people you can't beat the Dutch parties. They do have high quality events and I always feel that "wow effect" How did you meet Marco who you used to produce with? We were in the same class at school for 3 years. At the moment we don't work together as we split about a year ago now. That was hard because you can't replace him as personality and producer. His way of producing music was unique in every way. I for myself will carry on SHOKK with some slight changes and I can already ensure that after a relatively quiet 2004 SHOKK will be back in the stores in 05 with a wide range of new stuff. You’re very young to be so successful. Did you always plan to be djs and producers? Not at all, it was and it's still a hobby. I still have a full time office job in an IT company. It's hard to manage all together sometimes but as long I like and enjoy what I do I'll go on like this. The young age can also have some disadvantages, you have to learn a lot and pressure is higher on younger artists than on the "old lads" How did you start Djing and producing? It's about 10 years ago now when I bought my first desks and records. It was just for fun and because I liked the music so much, and it's still the same reason why I do it. You are from Zurich. What is the dance scene like in Switzerland? It's not as big as in the UK or the Netherlands but it's still good and interesting. We just have a population of seven million, so there are not a lot of really good dance clubs but some of them are very cool. At the moment house and R'N'B/Hip Hop are more popular than trance/techno which had their big time about five years ago when we had big events every one or two weeks. The scene keeps renewing itself and now and there are some interesting new faces and names coming up. What I can recommend to anyone in Zurich is the street parade with over one million people dancing on the streets around the lake of Zurich. It's the biggest dance-parade in the world, even bigger than the Love Parade in Berlin! If you get the chance to come over, do it! Do you ski or snowboard? It would be a shame if a Swiss would answer with "no" . I do ski, but not as much as a few years ago. When I'm together with my mates in the alps we always want to ski the whole day but after two or three hours we're already at the "aprés ski" parties which are really popular over here Have you ever played at The Fridge in Brixton before, If so when? I played at The Fridge once about two years ago. I've been told that they changed the interior of the club, so I’m curious to see what’s different. I enjoyed it a lot the last time and I’m looking forward to rock with the London crowd, especially because it's the release party of a man who I respect much, Scot Project. What can we expect at The Scot Project Album launch? Depends on my playtime. If I play before Frank I'll warm up the people with some driving stuff and if I play after him I'll be a bit harder. In any case you'll hear the improved SHOKK style. How would you describe your current style of music? I don't play strictly hard-trance anymore like I did two years ago. I like to play and show different aspects of the trance and the techy edge of dance. But I would never buy or play a tune I don't like just because it's a hot shot or whatever. What I play on a certain night can even depend on my actual emotions, the club and the crowd. Have you got any hot tunes in the pipeline we can look forward to? As I told you above you can expect some sexy work for next year. You'll find the announcements on www.shok.infowhich will be re-launched in November. What’s your favourite alcoholic drink? Whiskey-Coke or "Kir-Royal" (White Wine with Cassis Liquor) Why are the Swiss obsessed with cows? We're not obsessed with cows at all. I'm wondering why everyone thinks that of us. I'm ok with that we're a bit obsessed with chocolate or chesse fondue, but not with cows. Maybe you should answer that question yourselves - or did you ever see me wearing a shirt or underwear with cows on it? What advice would you give to budding producers? Believe in what you do and do it your own way.
