Hard House Academy preview with Phil Reynolds - Back where he belongs

This Saturday sees Phil Reynolds back where he belongs - on the main stage at Hard House Academy. Frantic's legendary resident has been hard at work producing has tasty new album in recent months, as well as getting through his regular diet of remixing and co-producing storming hard trance tracks, and wowing crowds throughout the capital. He has been one of the biggest names on the hard dance circuits for years now, and his legions of adoring fans are a testament to the quality of his hard and euphoric sets. All this, as well as running Impact Recordings - a label famous for high quality UK hard trance.
Even if you don't think you have heard any of his tunes, you are probably wrong - his remix of Pants & Corset's classic 'Malice In Wonderland' co-produced with Steve Blake has been one of the most played tracks of the last 12 months. A busy man for sure, I caught up with him to talk breakbeats, cracking on, and G5s...
So Phil, how’s the album project going?
It’s going well. I’ve had lots of problems with my computer and need to upgrade to a Mac G5 to really get my album finished off. If there is anyone out there who wants to sponsor me and donate me a G5 I’ll be very happy!!!!!
At what point did you decide that it was the next logical thing for you to work
on?
I felt that I needed to take the next step to be seen more as an artist and not just as a DJ. The album will contain different styles of dance music and not just Hard dance.
I remember hearing one of your new productions a while back (possibly with Matt Williams?) that incorporated a very phat breakbeat section…not just a breakbeat for the sake of it but a good 1 or 2 minute section. Do you think that clubbers are becoming more open-minded about the structure of hard dance music?
As a producer you are always looking at ways to make your tracks sound a little different. I’ve noticed that people have commented on chat forums about the introduction of breakbeats. People seem to like it. I think clubbers are open-minded, just as long as you don’t take it to the extreme, otherwise you’ll make it too different and it doesn’t work.
You are mainly known for playing music of the hard trance variety, but have been known to knock out some fairly dirty sets too – have you always played both styles?
I normally play the same sort of style of music. I sometimes change it depending on the gig. I played a really hard set earlier in the year at SE1 because I replaced Paul Glazby and I thought I’d try something different. But I wouldn’t normally play that hard.
You are back on the main stage at Hard House Academy’s 4th Birthday on October 23rd – you must be very excited! What are your memories of the last time you played, and what has changed for you since then?
I played in the house room last time, so the experience won’t compare to this time round playing last on the main stage. I’m really looking forward to.
This looks like being the biggest HHA in more ways than one – have you got any special tracks lined up for it?
Yes I have. I’ve got a new track that I’ve done with Greg Brookman and a cheeky bootleg of a Faithless tune that I’ve got my hands on.
Are the majority of your gigs in London? How often do you play up North for instance?
At the moment most of my gigs are in London. I used to play a lot of gigs outside of London for people like Sundissential and GoodGrief. My new management (mainline music) are now working hard to getting me lots of gigs outside of London, so hopefully there will be a lot more next year.
Do you currently have any residencies? Do residencies allow you to more musical freedom than one off gigs, or do you find that people come to expect a certain style of you more?
I play every two months for Innovate and I play quite regularly for Heat, but they are not residencies. People generally book you because of the style of music that you play. Whether you’re a resident or not, it doesn’t matter, your still being booked because of what you play. You do sometimes have to adjust what you play depending on where and at what time your playing.
The last year has seen several afterparties go under – what do you put this down to? What makes a good afterparty for you?
Most people I know are over afterparties. These days people prefer to go back to someone’s house and crack on. I think that if you’ve been out all night people prefer to go somewhere where all there friends are, where they can relax and not get hassled by anyone. I haven’t been to or played at an afterparty for a very long time. What makes a good afterparty? Well the same as any other party, nice venue, good crowd and good music!!!!
At what point in your career did you think – ‘yeah, I’ve really made it’?
I’ve never thought that. I still think I’m a long way off of what I want to achieve. I’m not the sort of person who thinks in those sorts of terms anyway.
Do you think that London is over-saturated with events now? Or do you think that there is room left still? What kind of event would you like to see taking place in London?
Compared to about 4 years ago there isn’t anywhere near the same amount of parties going on. I think the clubbing community in London has shrunk, which has meant that there aren’t as many promotions around. SW4 was probably the best gig that I’ve been to this year in London. I think it opened a lot of peoples mind to what can be achieved. Well done to the Heat crew for putting on something different. Lets hope they continue to put on the event.
There were lots of great festivals in the UK and across Europe this summer – did you go to any of them?
I went to Global gathering for a while and loved it. I came back early because I had to play in London. It was difficult to leave because it was so good. And of course SW4.
Have you played much in Europe? Which other countries dig the Phil Reynolds sound?
I’ve played in Switzerland, Finland, Holland and Ibiza. I’ve enjoyed at playing in all those countries. Every country has a slightly different sound to the next and the UK has a very distinctive sound. I guess Holland is one place that is used to a more UK sound as a lot of UK DJ’s play there.
Finally, do your trademark blonde locks possess some kind of Samson-like power? Any plans to cut them off ever??
They have done already, so no!!!!!!

If you haven't seen him play before, do yourself a favour and find out what all the fuss is about! A great DJ and producer, and a rather nice bloke to boot. Let him know if you've got a spare G5 lying around and then maybe we'll get to hear the LP even sooner!
