Based in Central London, Audio Energy are the heart of the thriving sound reinforcement industry. Utilising their Director systems from Germany, they not only provide the sound systems for both The Fire club and the all new Fridge, but they also provide systems for much larger corporate affairs. After many people had commented to me about how fantastic they thought the sound was in these two clubs, I caught up with Chad to find out about these unsung heros driving our scene.
*Ting*: Who exactly are Audio Energy?
Chad: Myself, my brother Ru, Pug, Richard Mathews and Colin Jarvy.
*Ting*: And this the original team? You've all been together since the beginning?
Chad: Yes.
*Ting* : How long have you been providing sound systems for the hard dance scene?
Chad: Since 97, I sold my racing motorbike to buy my first system (Peavey hisys 4's!).
*Ting* : What and where was your first party?
Chad: My first ever gig was Exodus festival in Luton, it was magic!! 3 days of pure madness. I was interviewed by Ministry magazine and soon realised I was hooked.
*Ting* : What made you decide to provide sound systems in the first place?
Chad: I Met up with Terry from Visual Reality in a squat party In Tottenham Hale who was a DJ at the time. I hadn't seen Terry since we were at boarding school in Somerset together. We decided to do a few squat parties and here we are!
*Ting* : Apart from being hugely successful in the dance scene you also provide systems for much bigger more corporate affairs, tell us a bit about them and how they find you.
Chad: The quality of the systems we operated were soon noticed by the corporate world in around 2000, these days this is where we push our marketing. We do all sorts of corporate events ranging from conferences for the city banks right through to black tie A-list dinner parties.
*Ting* : You have chosen to use the GAE Director system. Tell us a bit more about your choice of rig and why you chose it.
Chad: In '98 I had a part time job with a local PA company U.S.C, the Unique Sound Company, which operated the first GAE Director systems in this country. By 2000 I had bought some of my own GAE Director and started AudioEnergy Ltd and by October 2001 I had acquired the business and assets of USC.
*Ting* : Tell us more about what your rigs consist of. I mean, imagine, for just a moment that I am a fully competent and highly intelligent sound engineer and know what you’re talking about.
Chad: It consists of 10 GA Director Bass Cabs and 6 GAE Director Mid-High Cabs, and this is all powered by 7 Chevin Research A 6000’s amplifiers and 3 A1000 Amplifiers. The system control is done by GAEDSC 28 and the whole venue sound is managed by BSS Sound web. DJ monitors are 2 x GA 152TMs – total system power is 40K RMS
*Ting* : What’s the most exciting piece of kit you have recently acquired? And what’s next on your wish list?
Chad: Most exciting has got to be the GA Director System. And we are going to take delivery of a new Outline Doppia System and possibly the new butterfly line array.
*Ting* : What would be your ideal gig to do?
Chad: I'm not sure really. It seems like we have done everything! I really love where it all came from; a field in the middle of nowhere, a big system, all my old DJ mates such as Orange Peel, yourself, Guesty etc and 1000 or so rug crazed punters. Magic!!
*Ting* : What has been your favourite party to date?
Chad: That is very hard to answer as there has been some good ones! The Eclipse festival in Cornwall was pretty good!
*Ting* : Any funny moments?
Chad: Being escorted by a police helicopter, 4 meat wagons, dog units and various cars to the M25 after being busted at a forest party in Guilford.
*Ting* : : yeah, gutted mate. For those that don't know what he's talking about, here's a link to see pictures of the one in 2002 and then you'll know why we had to try for it again! http://www.poleshift.net/events/innaforest2002.asp Anyway being an avid Mercedes fan, I have to say that is a very nice motor you have there. Is it yours?
Chad: No I hired it! I have a much better car than that. I have a BMW M3
*Ting* : Well there's no accounting for taste, I still love ya. Many thanks to Chad for taking time out to answer my questions and I hope you now all have a greater understanding of what it takes to make some fecking noize!
