Joe Black – A short interview to get inside the mind of a message board hero
Reported by Latex Zebra

Submitted 23-02-05 00:45
For the second year running now Joe Black has scooped the accolade of Message Board Hero at the Hard Dance Awards. He has beaten rivals (sic) and favourites from several other message boards (including Gurn.net and Tidy.com) and now, with two Golden Glowsticks to take out raving with him, I thought it was time to peel off the internet exterior and to prod and probe the delicate fleshy bits underneath. So join us now as we…. wait for it… meet Joe Black.
So Joe, Message Board Hero two years on the trot, I’m not sure if it’s a record or not but that is quite an achievement. So how did you find out about HarderFaster in the first place and what encouraged you to stay and rack up such a hefty post count?
As far as I recall (and it’s all a bit hazy now), I think that I found out about HarderFaster as most people did back in the day – through the photo section. I’m fairly sure that some of my friends were photographed and we were told that in order to view the pictures, we’d have to visit the site. I do recall that the first people that I met from the site were Bunny, Zimbolicious and Larsie. That was ages ago – some time in 2002, I think. I stayed because it was entertaining, it was easy to use the forums, and it was useful to discover what events were coming up. In terms of the post count, that was never my goal, merely a byproduct of entertaining myself.
To be honest I think that the real reason I stayed was that Tom didn’t kick me off.
How did you first get into clubbing and can you remember the first Hard Dance event you went to?
I know it’s going to sound fairly clichéd, but I’ve always enjoyed dance music (especially trance). I’ve been going to clubs and raves since my early teenage years. Of course, this was back in South Africa. I remember the first hard dance event that I went to in London very clearly – it was Endorphin at the Fridge – on the 16th of March 2002, and as far as I recall Tara Reynolds was playing. I think you could say that was when I first got into clubbing.
Not actually being involved in the dance music scene, well other than being a clubber, what role do you think message boards play in the development of the scene?
I do think that they have their place – however I don’t think they are as important as some people believe them to be. I think that some good hype on the boards can help a smaller party succeed, just as some bad publicity might hurt it. I also think that the larger parties have lots of other promotional channels that work equally as well, if not better. All in all I think that the primary purpose of the boards is – or at least, should be – to create a sense of community, a place where people can discuss “the scene” and all its aspects, while also meeting new people, and being exposed to new ideas.
How would you respond to people who say message board heroes are sad?
I’d say that they’re probably right.
The winner of the Hard Dance Awards 2004/2005, by Pink Kitty
Your replies are often short and forthright, are you a man of few words?
No, not really.
How do you feel about pretenders trying to oust you from your throne or those bitter that you beat them into second place….
To be honest, I take the whole message board hero thing about as seriously as I take the message boards themselves – it’s all a good laugh, it’s also entertainment, and it is (or perhaps was) a good way to pass the working day. As such, I feel quite amused when people actually make an effort to oust me. I would advise the people that are bitter that I beat them into second place, to perhaps not try so hard – rather, they should attempt to conduct themselves with the flawless grace and effortless class of a true Message Board Hero (i.e. me). Alternatively, they could do what I did and sleep with all the judges – and most of the voters.
During your stint on the forums have you made any life long friends or enemies?
Life long is a bit optimistic, as I’ve only been on the forums for a few years. I’m sure that I’ve made many more enemies than friends, however, there are a few people that I’ve met via HarderFaster that I do consider quality people, and I make a concerted effort to see quite often.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Gorgeous intelligent megalomaniac.
Given your lofty status and power, this could potentially catapult a promotion and DJ into superstardom (if it isn’t already), but what is your favourite party and who is your favourite DJ?
I’ve always maintained that the best parties (for me), are Tilt for a smaller event / day party, and WildChild for a large event/night party. I know that Tilt has recently moved to a different format (taking place in the evenings), and I haven’t had the opportunity to visit yet, but I’m sure that it will no doubt be equally as good and remain both a classy party and one of my favourites. The first WildChild party that I went to was at the Coronet – I was dragged to it, as I was starting to feel a bit disillusioned with clubbing and really wasn’t up for going out. Suffice to say that I changed my mind after that particular evening, and I try not to miss a WildChild event if it’s humanly possible. There are many other events that I do enjoy, and many other promoters that I do respect, however.
In terms of a favourite DJ, I thought this question through, and to be totally fair it has to be Paul Van Dyk. I’ve only ever seen him twice, but I truly think he’s reached perhaps the pinnacle of what a DJ can achieve, in terms of technical ability, intelligent sets, production, and common business sense. He is a true artist and a leader in his field.
Joe Black is the chosen one, by Pink Kitty
What do you think of people who behave one way online and another way in person?
People like that make me sick.
Have you ever visited any other message boards, if not, do you think it is worth spreading some Joe Black love around?
I have popped into a few of the others, but I find that there are generally too many English people on them. To be honest, with my job becoming ever busier, I don’t think that I would have the time to frequent more than one board.
I also haven’t managed to p*ss off everybody that I would like to on HarderFaster just yet, and there are one or two people that I have yet to… get to know better.
How tall are you?
I’m not – I’m short. I’m taller than ck though.
Did you really think that I was going to answer that question? (I was hoping for an exclusive)
Some people seem to live their lives by what goes on forum pages, to the point of them almost ruling their lives, what advice or sagely wisdom do you have for such people?
Get a life.
You can be quite biting and almost caustic with your humour on the forums. What makes you laugh though?
I do quite enjoy watching people get wound up over nothing, and making fools of themselves. I personally like sarcasm, wit and dry humour, and I am also quite partial to irony. I don’t particularly enjoy obvious humour.
Who makes you laugh on the forums? You don’t have to say me but remember I can edit your answers to make you look really, really nasty.
The funniest person on these forums is Latex Zebra. Not.
(I’m really, really nasty already)
The funniest person on these forums is – or rather was – TearZ / Machine. Nobody can match him for either wit or humour. Unfortunately he doesn’t post anymore – however, I think that we should start a petition to *force* him to return, against his will.
There are a few people that still post that often make me laugh, including GloomCookie, Zoolander and El Capitano Pete.
What is your favourite smiley?
I’m not a big fan of emoticons, even though I haven been using them a fair bit recently. I like and though.
Joe Black @ Riot, by Amy_Anders
Finally, the Joe Black on HarderFaster and the Joe Black in clubs, how similar are they? Is Joe Black online just a persona?
I’d say that people have to come and find that out for themselves – especially young, nubile, sexually adventurous female people.
A few quick fire questions:
Salmon or trout
Salmon
Bacon or eggs
Eggs, unfertilized
Trance or hard house
Oh, Trance – hands down
Salted or dry roasted
Salted
Thanks to Joe Black for taking the time out of his hectic posting schedule and thanks also to Pink Kitty and Amy_Anders for use of the photos.
Joe Black will be appearing at a venue near you for a live P.A very soon.
