Bedlam goes Brazil nuts: introducing the Maloka djs

Reported by Eduardo Herrera / Submitted 04-06-05 12:35

This Saturday Bedlam brings you the flavours of Brazil in one of their most hedonistic nights yet with a celebration of music, enjoyment and life! All Bedlam ravers who attend dressed in keeping with the theme (Brazilian football shirts etc) will get a free drink! The club will be dressed to accompany the theme, with showgirls, Brazilian beach boys, dance floor limbo (with plenty of prizes for winners!) and a carnival atmosphere like only Bedlam knows how!

Hosting the Firepit will be Maloka Deluxe, a project created to showcase the Brazilian djs' vibes. We quickly managed to put together a few questions to introduce you to the Maloka guests: Briza, Ilan Kriger and Paolo Lopes!

How old are you and where were you born?

ILAN - 27, Curitiba, Parana, Brazil.

BRIZA - I am 21 years old, and I was born in Brazil, in a small city called Aparecida do Taboado.

PAOLO - I’m 35. I was born in Rio de Janeiro for a bit, moved to Sao Paulo and from there to England.

Paulo

What are your musical influences?

ILAN - I used to listen to many different styles from music, since rock bands from the 70s until rap and reggae. I started spinning hard house, mainly things from BK, and Nick Sentience, and nowadays I’m spinning more techno tracks.

BRIZA - I grew up listening Brazilian music, like bossa nova, MPB, samba. I listen to all good music, so it is difficult to say what have influenced me.

PAOLO - Talking about musical influences, I am learning as I go along. So basically I like everything but when it comes to playing, I like uplifting hard energetic stuff. You know something that gives me goose bumps, is more like a thermometer, if it works for me its bound to work for the crowd.

Ilan

What made you want to play records?

ILAN - In the beginning it was only a hobby, but after I spinned for the first time for an audience bigger then 30 people I realized how good it is share music with other people. After this I started to look for some gigs, the best choice was start my own party, Big Fish, with two other mates Rafael Araujo and Gadotti.

BRIZA - I just love music, and I love techno. I play records because I love it.

PAOLO - I went to a house party long time ago, and there was a guy spinning some records, I stayed talking to the guy and he invited me to have a go. Soon after I left the place went to buy a pair of decks. I know crazy isn't it?

Briza

How long have you being a DJ?

ILAN - 6 years

BRIZA - I started djing in 2002, but just after I came to London I started mixing properly.

PAOLO - Hmmmmm, let me think, since 1999. I guess I lot djs started there.

What lead you to start playing abroad?

BRIZA - When I moved to London I hadn’t played at parties before. I started playing here in London.

PAOLO - Hehe, mainly contacts, and I mean good contacts. Secondly the buzz, each crowd has their own style of buzz.

What other countries have you played in?

ILAN - None and this is my 4th time spinning in London.

BRIZA - My first time playing outside London was last weekend in an underground techno festival in Wales. Before I came to London I didn’t play at parties.

PAOLO - Holland, Brazil.

Can you single out one experience as your most enjoyable DJing set ever?

ILAN – It’s hard to put only one! In terms of a venue, any of the many gigs that I did at Warung Beach Club. It’s a huge night club in the middle of a jungle front of the beach. Check out their website www.warungclub.com

BRIZA - My set @ Seone at the KAOS party was wicked, I played back 2 back with Animatek, we had such a great time.

PAOLO - No really, I treat each gig as my first, so I get even more excited. But if I think carefully, I’d pick the one I played last year in Brazil. Playing for my own people, just before Christmas time was great.

Some of you have produced music. If not do you plan to? How do you describe your productions? Where can people find them?

ILAN - I have 2 labels, one is the Br 909, check our website www.br909records.hpg.com.br, the next releases will be launch soon, Br 906 Desligado Ep and Br 909 Ltd 1 Capoeira. The last one is a huge hit in Brazil and now is taking the UK like a storm. Big jocks like Scott Mac, Eduardo Herrera, Ed Real, Guffy and many more are hammering the track.

Now I’m releasing a new label, I will press in Brazil (this one is more for the internal market in Brazil) “Requentado” Records.

I have already releases at Headline Records and soon I will release one track at Apex Records, one of Dave The Drummer’s labels.

BRIZA - I don’t, but I really want to learn how to produce music as soon as possible.

PAOLO - Yes, I do actually, but the kind of sound I am looking for takes time to find. Hard really tuff, but at the same time melodic to the sense that people can relate to.

How do you see the fusion of techno with hard dance?

ILAN – It’s great! I have been doing this kind of thing for the last 6 years, and I feel that techno is going up over here. Psy Trance is growing a lot in Brazil and over here, probably in a near future everything will be crossover.

BRIZA - I didn’t know about this fusion.

PAOLO - I think that is great. The more we try the more we can get close to perfection.

What’s your favourite venue in London?

ILAN - The Fridge.

BRIZA - Seone is a nice venue.

PAOLO - Hmmmm Brixton Academy, has to be.

There is a vast Brazilian clubbing population in London. What are your expectations for the Maloka Room as Bedlam goes Brazil nuts?

ILAN - I hope to find some old Brazilian friends and have a lot of fun.

BRIZA - I think will be a good night, I’m expecting lots of fun.

PAOLO - The initiative is great, I hope to see lots of Brazilians there. The Maloka room will rock from start to end make no mistake. I can almost bet on it.

What is the weirdest thing you have ever been asked whilst DJing?

BRIZA - I got lucky, hehehe, I've never been asked.

PAOLO - Honestly, I can’t remember…

What the clubbers can expect from your sets this Saturday?

ILAN - I will spin many records from my labels, all of them with a Brazilian flavour but with a big British influence (Dave The Drummer, Bk, Geezer to name a few). Probably no one wants to listen a Brazilian dj spinning UK tunes!

BRIZA – We’re gonna ROCK!!!!

PAOLO - I hope they can enjoy... we never know! Brazilians are so easy going, they’re great people to party with.

More: This month Bedlam will give you a little taste of Rio with a tribute to all things Brazilian, world-renowned party people who know how to bring the house down (or as they say in Brazil: ‘A casa vai cair!’) It’s fair to say that it’s hard to find anywhere in the world where people know how to enjoy themselves more – most famously at the Rio Carnival. This national and cultural hedonism also manifests itself in Brazil’s highly developed beach culture and the country’s superb music and dancing. We aim to capture a little of that Brazilian emotion at this month’s Bedlam, so join us for a celebration of music, enjoyment and life!

Bedlams own home grown residents will be shaking the foundations of the main floor with special guests Ali Wilson & Roobarb’s Dave Austin. Hosting the Firepit will be ‘Maloka Deluxe’, showcasing the premium Brazilian DJs here in London.
