Yoji & friends preview: interview with Oliver Klitzing, Brisk & Alex Kidd

Reported by Annabelle One Inch / Submitted 11-06-05 13:38

The idea behind Yoji & Friends is all friends coming together and bringing their unique sound to the party. All of those playing are friends of Yoji that he respects musically and who he flies out to play at his own events in Japan. Yoji himself will be playing two sets: one trance set and another harder set. The finale of the night will be all of the djs back to back, something Yoji likes to do at all his events and is always great fun. With the help of top promoters like Goodgreef, this event is the ethos of what Yoji is about: top quality music from some of the most talented artists in the scene.

We catch up with three artists playing at Yoji & Friends: Oliver Klitzing, DJ Brisk aka half of the infamous Stimulant DJs and Alex Kidd, who has just mixed half of the Goodgreef Album 3, ‘Techno to Hardtrance’ with Yoji mixing the second cd, ‘Tech Uplifters to Trance Harder Style.’

Oliver Klitzing is a name known by many whether, under the pseudonym Reloop or for his techno masterpiece of ‘Video Killed The DJ’. Oliver has been great friends with Yoji for many years, playing regularly at Yoji's own events in Japan, Giga and Ultra Pumpin.

Oliver Klitzing

How did you meet Yoji?

This was a big rave for 20,000 people where Yoji had his own stage!!

This was also the first time I realized how big Yoji is in Japan....

What do you like about Yoji?

When he enters the stage, you know that Yoji is now on stage! It's a show behind and with the decks and the way he presents his music. But Yoji is not only a special artist, he is also a very good friend, who helps you out where he can.

What is one of your funniest experiences with Yoji?

We all looked very dirty (you know that situation after a very successful and "wet" party) and were laughing and joking and fooling around, between those well dressed business men and womenSmile. This was very weird and funny, cause I felt that everybody was looking at us, but we had a lot of fun!

Brisk

Brisk aka half of the Stimulant DJs, will be playing a rare hard dance set. The master of hardcore will apply his infamous mixing technique to his other love of hard dance. Brisk and Yoji have been friends for just over 3 years, with Brisk having played alongside Yoji at his own event 'Ultra Pumpin' and collaborated on 'Get Up, Get Down' on Stimulant.

How did you meet Yoji?

On a rollercoaster in Florida, we were both sick as a result!

What do you like about Yoji?

His sense of humour!

What is one of your funniest experiences with Yoji?

Setting off fireworks in a public park in Osaka, Japan. One firework was similar to an expanding dog poo and we all had great fun as Yoji pretended to 'deposit it' on the pavement.

What do you think will make Yoji & Friends different from other events?

The world class line up on offer will ensure a diverse and interesting musical spread alongside the event production, which is always first class at Yoji's parties.

What is you current favourite track?

Nazareth 'Kick Ma Rap' - banging party techno stormer from the holy one!

What can people expect from your set at Yoji & Friends?

Bad mixing, poor track selection and some 80s classics for fun (no requests though please).

Any problems, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Alex Kidd @ Tranzaction

After playing a banging set after Yoji at a recent Dance Academy in Plymouth, Alex Kidd is well qualified to be on this line up. He's recently mixed the 'Techno to Hardtrance' cd on Goodgreef Album 3, and the track listing is indeed a who's who of dance music.

How did you meet Yoji?

At Mainframe about 3 years ago I saw him backstage before my set and I stole a ciggie off him. I doubt he'd remember that though!

What do you like about Yoji?

I’ve had the pleasure of working with him on a professional level for a couple of projects and its great to work with someone of his experience.

Musically he has a vision that comes to him naturally and from hard trance to techno to hardstyle to trance, I've heard many different musical sides to him that he takes his own unique stance on...and it works! Personally, the guy’s a legend...

It’s so refreshing and inspiring to meet someone of his stature in the scene that is so honest and down to earth.

What is one of your funniest experiences with Yoji?

After a recent gig in Ireland for the album tour, discussing hot pepperamis in the taxi home and hearing him attempting to swear in English whilst he’s full of flu at the hotel reception, priceless!

What do you think will make Yoji & Friends different from other events?

The venue is immense, the line up is unique and musically it will flow perfectly. With Goodgreef supporting the event it’ll be fun and games all round. I can’t wait to see both of Yoji’s sets.

What is you current favourite track?

Hennes and Cold - 2nd trip - Alex Kidd v Dark by Design remix

What can people expect from your set at Yoji & Friends?

I’m gonna nail it but I’m also gonna experiment with some new sounds and tracks and give a little bit of techno in my set. I’ve also got a few tricks up my sleeve, but above all... carnage and energy!

There has been a last minute addition to the lineup of Yoji & Friends...

Yoji has requested that Ian Knowles aka IK join the line up for Yoji & Friends @ Nation, Liverpool Saturday 11th June.

Ian Knowles caught Yoji's attention after sending in a demo. From that came the massive release that is ‘X-Bass’, Hellhouse Recordings no.12.

IK ‘X-Bass’ Original Mix
Incredible hard bass sound! The sound noisily distorted by lowering bit rate, it lashes out like a sandstorm. An extreme style of underground club sounds is experienced through this enormously bass driven track. The remix has been included on the compilation CD (mixed by BRISK/STIMULANT DJS) of HARD KANDY, the no.1 hard dance night @ Melbourne, Australia.

Ian will also be joining the rest of the DJs for the back to back to back malarky!
