The British Murder Boys techno interview Reported by Macavity / Submitted 16-11-05 10:52 Interviews with techno DJs are quite rare on Harderfaster, yet it’s probably one of the most well supported dance flavours in the world. Lovers of the genre are addicted to its smooth progression and multi-layering, peppered with intricate percussive detail. Often described as intelligent dance music, it grew from the underground clubs and it certainly made an impact as many of its fans treat techno as almost a religion. I don’t blame them as it’s utterly absorbing and very addictive. If you’ve ever been ambivalent about techno, then chances are you’ve never heard the masters at work in a club pumping their wares through an A-Class sound system — you’ll probably change your mind if you did. Many people have heard of techno gods such as Richie Hawtin and Carl Cox, but another act which is pretty massive on the UK techno scene is The British Murder Boys. Also know as Surgeon and Regis, they hail from Birmingham and, describing themselves as something in-between a live act and a dj act, they will be touching down at Turnmills on Saturday 26th November for Blue’s First Birthday. I seized the opportunity to get them to do a quick interview. You’re probably been asked this hundreds of times, but where did the name The British Murder Boys come from? Whose brainchild was it? From the shock-art Dadaist group of the same name. It came from one of Tristan Tzara’s manifestoes. What are you real names and how did you get into DJing? Anthony Child & Karl O’Connor. Karl isn’t into DJing; Anthony began DJing in the early 90s, quickly gaining a residency at Birmingham’s infamous Cockring club and a three year monthly residency at Berlin’s famous Tresor Club. You perform live, but not in the traditional sense. What can people who have never seen you play before expect of your act at The British Murder Boys As the DJ booth is enclosed at Turnmills, it will be difficult for anyone to see us play. We occupy the grey area between live act and DJ, using and abusing modern technologies for their performance. British Murder Boys’ performance is unique, improvised, stylish and brutal. Your style is very much influenced by a deep industrial sound. Where do you get your inspiration from? We get our inspiration from everywhere including Cabaret Voltaire, DAF, Robert Rental, Suicide, Coil and Faust. The techno scene seems to be en vogue at the moment with people like Richie Hawtin and Sven Vath gaining lots of favour. What are your thoughts on the UK techno scene at the moment? How does it differ from a few years ago? We really weren’t aware that techno was en vogue at the moment. The UK techno club scene is energetic and a little drunk a lot of the time. Over the last 13 years its size has gone up and down many times, but it has remained consistently energetic. You describe yourselves at the Birmingham techno pioneers. What’s the techno scene like in Birmingham? On a life support machine. However, House of God celebrates its 13th birthday at the end of January 2006. Who are your DJing gods at the moment? John Peel. What CDs are are getting a spending a lot of time in your car stereos at the moment? Karl — ‘Dynamo’ — Aussenvor Anthony — Katamari Damashii You’re playing at Blue at Turnmills alongside Baby Ford and Trevor Rockcliffe on 26th November. Is Turnmills a favoured venue of yours? Anthony: As a kind of link-up I remember going down to London to stay with Peter (Baby) Ford about 12 years ago. We went to some great clubs in Soho and he took me to Turnmills for the first time. I remember that there weren’t that many people there (I think it was a week night) and Mr C was playing. I seem to remember almost fainting that night, but I can’t remember why. What’s the best club in the world at the moment in your opinion? A club called Womb in Tokyo, Japan. Blue takes place at 26th November.
