Freeformation Chris-Mess Rave-Up Preview With Type 1

Everyone likes a good session. Let’s be honest we wouldn’t be on this site if we didn’t. But when it comes to pushin it, havin it, and generally getting on it and off it with the best of em, they don’t come much more Wired than London hard dance duo Type 1. Well known faces on the London scene for some six years, the lively DJ pairing have developed a reputation beyond mere party animals after sets for the likes of Atomic Energy, Riot! and Extreme Euphoria proved they’re as capable causing dancefloor destruction from behind the decks as they are in front of it. Who better, then, to lead the peak-time charge into festive debauchery at the Nu Energy Collective’s FREEformation Chris-mess rave-up at Hidden on the 23rd December? As the duo and freshly installed Riot! residents prepare for their hour of no-holds barred hard dance mayhem in the FREEformation hard dance room, we catch up with Type 1’s Baz and Glen to put their reputation as certified crack-on kings to the test and also delve into what festive mayhem they will be bringing to proceedings on the 23rd….
You’re both playing the Nu Energy Collective FREEformation Chris-Mess party on 23rd December at the sleek new Hidden venue in Vauxhall. From all accounts and experiences, you’re a pair of absolutely bonkerzoid ravin nutbags. Do you care to defend yourselves against such claims and can we expect full-on Type 1 lunacy from your set on the 23rd December?
Type 1: We agree with the claims that we are absolute bonkerzoid ravin nutbags! And yes you can definitely expect the usual Type 1 shenanigans behind the decks. We love it.
The FREEformation Chris-mess rave up is a totally free party and, despite the all-star 3 room line up, won’t cost ravers but a penny to enter. As hardened party animals, what is the most havin’ it free party either of you have ever attended and what made it such a mentalist’s haven?
We have been to a few free parties in out time, but the one that really comes to mind is a free party that we played for in Wales this summer with Ed Real. The free party was called Teknival and it was like a free festival on Betws Mountain. We arrived at the location to find the police had blocked off the only road leading to the mounting, so we had to park a serious distance from the party, next to some random farm, only to walk through the farmers fields whilst the farmer was threatening to shoot us with his shot gun. Not a nice experience, but hey we had a rave to get to! Even if walking up a mountain with our fully loaded record bags nearly killed us!
Was it worth all the effort then?
Hell yeah! After passing a man sleeping in the grass we finally reached the top and in the distance you could see a rave in full swing with about 20 different rigs! One of the rigs was a Funktion 1 sound system worth over 100 grand, and in a field! Purely amazing experience… on top of a mountain in Wales and needless to say, yes, we got totally trolleyed!
Type 1
Formerly the Studio 33 club, and before that the bricked out Chunnel Club, the newly refurbished Hidden is now one of London’s most kickin underground dance venues with promotions like Convergence, Logic and Total Mayhem all putting all star parties before our massive Freeformation party on 23rd. Have you had the pleasure of checking out the venue’s new look for yourselves and, if so, what do you make of it?
Actually we popped in there for a couple on Saturday, They have done a huge amount of work on the place and it really looks different. So much better than before when it was Studio 33; when you walked into the middle room it looked like McDonalds with those nasty red and yellow tiles! Loving the blue LEDs!
How would you describe the current Type 1 sound?
We are playing so many different styles at the moment; we play electro, funky techno, hard techno, hard dance, psy trance and hard house but we'll be playing a fusion of hard dance, hard house and psy trance for this set.
Are there any particular records that are really doing it for you right now?
Loads but the forthcoming Riot release ‘Switch’ is definitely rockin dancefloors every time and Maddox’s remix of Human Resource’s ‘Dominator’ is still doing it! And there’s this bootleg that we only know as ‘Funk’ that hasn’t left the box for a while either!
With all the familiar NEC faces all appearing behind the decks at FREEformation it’s going to be the one time in the year when all the extended friends and followers in the NEC get together for one almighty and massive rave-up. How did you first come into contact with Kevin Energy and the Nu Energy Collective?
We got to know Kevin from playing Atomic Energy, which was our first major residency in London, and Pendragon a few years ago as Kevin was always playing for both promotions. He liked our sound and was always seen on the dance floor whilst we was playing, which is quality!
We did start a track with K Complex a while ago but never got round to finishing it, we are going to be working on a track with Kevin in January though.
You both run the infamous Sunday session at George IV, Wired. Can we safely assume that that you’ll both be joining us for the entirety of the FREEformation Chris-mess mash-up on the 23rd and getting right proper on it?!!
Absolutely, we’re not playing anywhere else on the 23rd so we'll be there all the way with bells on and probably flashy crimbo hats.
Bazza
Are there any other acts in particular that you are most keen to catch?
Looking forward to Kevin Energy’s old school set as we haven’t heard his old school in ages not one to miss.
Will we see you bouncing up and down in the hardcore room also..?
Haha we may be persuaded to go jump around for 5mins in the hardcore but we'll have to see...
You’ve been staple name on capital’s underground hard dance scene for years now, but how did you first join forces? Were you friends from way back or does your friendship owe itself to a random dancefloor and a chance meeting?
No, we have known each other since we were three years old and went to playschool together. From there we went to the same schools and have been best friends for that amount of time. Obviously we starting raving together, bought decks and started mixing together for around six hours an evening Monday to Friday when we first started at 17 years old. Glenn’s Dad has a converted garage with a spare room we used to use and we could seriously bang it out till whenever we wanted to which was a great help, so we have always been in it together right from the very first time we mixed records.
Do what sort of clubs and events did you first start hitting in your first hard dance honeymoon?
Three words. Freedom at Bagleys!!!!!!!!! God I miss that place, many a good and messy times there. We raved there practically every weekend for a year and half before we felt the need too look elsewhere. Started at the age of 17 when trying to get served in pub was hard work, we found Bagleys and were hooked. We would get the last train and hope that they would let us in being proper nervous in the queue as if we didn’t get in, we would be stranded. After a while knew we could get in as we would be on Lisa Pin-Up's Guest list. This is where we heard hard house for the very first time and fell in love with the scene! Anyone who went there at that time will tell you how fuckin wikkid that place was; we would give anything to go back.
Have you been making any headway with your production ambitions? Have you got any studio dates lined up for coming months?
Yes we both have studios now and have been learning a hell of a lot. We are using a programme called Ableton Live to sequence everything and plenty of Vst's and samples.
We have both finished a track each and it’s coming on nicely, it’s a huge learning curve but we reckon give it 6 months and we'll be releasing stuff on our own. As for working with other people we are going in the studio with Nick Sentience for him to engineer our tracks for us on the 22nd and 23rd of December so hopefully we'll have a new track straight out of the studio to play that evening for Freeformation.
Glen
Given half a chance, who would you most like to collaborate with and why?
Definitely Nick Sentience as his production has always been outstanding; we love his style especially the chunky stuff. Liam Howlett from the Prodigy! Nuff said. OD404/Bass Graffiti, Black & White, The list goes on…
Which the gigs that you’ve played in 2005 has been the most memorable and why?
That has to be our debut at Riot, We have loved Riot and supported the party right from the start and to be made resident is a massive achievement for the both of us. We had developed a new techno sound especially to warm up for Riot and the place went nuts, and with the Thunder Ridge system in the End being the best sound system in London it was an absolutely awesome experience that will be hard to beat.
And now to wrap up, it’s time for our festive five….

The Nu Energy Collective presents... FREEformation: The Chris-mess Rave-Up!
Mistletoe and Santa hats ahoy… Christmas is upon us again! But while we’re waiting for that mind-blowing NYE, you can already feel money flying out of wallets faster than Reindeers.
Needless gadgets for Dad, bath soaps for Mum, crackers stuffed with pointless presents and crap jokes and NYE tickets so inflated they make Santa look thinner than Kate Moss at the fag end of a 6 day smack binge… fuck me, it’s enough to have you snarling harder than scrooge on a crack comedown.
But WAIT!! The festive spirit aint dead just yet… What if there was a rave where you and your friends could get truly rockin in three rooms of seriously havin it hardcore, hard dance and old skool in one of London’s newest & plushest venues? What if this rave didn’t even dent your pockets let alone rinse them dry?
.....................Hang on…………..What’s That I Hear You Say??………………There is??
You Bet Your Last Christmas Stocking There Is!!
Chris-mess is coming early and on Friday 23rd December at the plush new Hidden venue, the Nu Energy Collective are inviting everyone to the party; a monumental ‘thanks’ to the friends and followers that have made 05 our most rockin year yet.
The best thing is it aint costing you not one penny…
And that doesn’t mean we’ve gone all scrooged on the line up…just wrap your snow goggles round the 3 room all-star line-up!!
