How Shaun M got to tidy up

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 16-01-06 18:58

Tidy is the biggest label for the harder generation in the world, and to work with its A&R team is a great honour for any budding DJ or producer. For South African born Shaun M, the dream was realised, when tidy trax's main man Lee Haslam spotted his potential. He was then asked to join the team as their tidy store online manager, and has since become Lee’s protégé. As a result he's produced 9 European stormers and gained himself a reputation as a name to watch in the North of England. Those of you who have been to a tidy event will already be familiar with Shaun, but those that haven't are in for a treat when he makes his London big-event debut at tidy vs Extreme Euphoria, taking place at Heaven on 27th January.

As Cilla Black on Blind Date may have said, what’s your name and where do you come from?

I was born in Cape Town in South Africa. When I moved to the UK I first lived up North in Doncaster and have just recently moved down to London.

What style of music do you play, and where might we have heard you play?

I play euphoric tech trance and European hard trance. You’ve probably heard me playing at the tidy events, in Amsterdam, in South Africa and a few other places around the UK.

Shaun at Thunder City in South Africa

Over the years and since you started to play you’ve appeared on line-ups alongside PVD, Scott Bond, Fergie, The Tidy Boys, Scot Project, Tom Harding and Eddie Halliwell. Do you have an ultimate DJ hero?

There are many out there, but I will have to go with the one that has been there for me since the beginning and helped me through thick and thin — Lee Haslam. Not because he is my best mate, but because he has showed me the ropes of the dance music scene and put me the right direction, both on the DJ and production front, offering advice and making things much clearer for me. His own productions has been amazing over the past years and he is always breaking new boundaries. As a dj he has pretty much done it all, and I still till today stand and watch him play with amazement.

Apart from being a dj you were also the online manager for the tidy online store and now work for Tuned Distribution. What’s it like to work full time in the dance music industry? Do you ever get bored?

Being part of tidy and now working for Tuned is never boring — it’s GREAT. The dance music scene is what I love doing — no matter what, when and where I’m doing it. Whether selling vinyl, djing, producing or just talking about it to friends or clubbers, it’s always a great feeling. Dance music is growing and improving all the time. With new talented producers, djs and labels, there is always something new to talk about.

What is the role of a distributor from an everyday point of view?

Tuned Distribution is one of the UK and world’s biggest distributors of dance music vinyl, distributing some of the UK and world’s top artists and producers labels, such as Matt Darey, Jon O Bir, Mike Koglin, Alphazone, Steve Hill, Nick Sentience and Simon Eve, to name a few. Getting the vinyl out there to the worldwide public, in music stores, or Internet stores, is our main aim.

Even though you’ve only been producing a year you’ve got 9 collaborations under your belt, with many of the tracks making compilations. Do you think your time at tidy gave you a head start?

I always had a feeling for production and the thought of releasing something was always a dream for me. tidy saw the potential in me as an artist, and what I had to offer them on a business front. They opened a few doors on the way and it was up to me whether I wanted to walk through it or not. Everything else I did was due to my own doing.

You’ve already a popular name in the North of England and have played numerous gigs aboard including in your own country, South Africa. Will this be your first London set as a DJ?

tidy Euphoria will be my first big event down in London. I’ve played in the capital before, but for events on a smaller scale. I currently run my own night in London, called Shiver, which has been well received and still growing. Hopefully this will be the start of me playing more big events in the South.

You now live in London after living up North for a while. What do you miss about the North?

Close friends the most.

And what are you loving about London?

The dance scene here is wicked. I’ve had the privilege of going to some of the top nights down here and finally got to meet some of the people that I have been speaking to over the phone for the past few years, as well as new people within the dance scene.
Oh — and the tubes aren’t that bad either.

What tracks are you currently working on, and when can we expect to hear them?

I finished the follow-up to ‘Another Man’s Language’ with Paul Maddox towards the end of last year called ‘Diggin Deeper’ and it has been getting excellent response from Andy Whitby and Phil York. I’ve just received news 2 weeks ago that ‘African Dream’, which I have done with talent Pierre Pienaar aka PHATT, has been signed to Tranzlation — due out early in 2006. Later this month I’ll be working on a new project with the man behind Hardtimez and my close friend, Phil York.

More production dates have been set, so be sure to watch this space.

Thanks to Most Wanted for taking the time out of there busy day to do this interview with me. See you all at Tidy Euphoria!!
