Marc French gets Twisted

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 26-01-06 21:45

Right class, stop talking, pay attention and get ready to brush up on your French. But ne paniquez pas, you won't need to distinguish your chevals from your chevauxs: this revision lesson isn't about the curriculum language we struggled with at school, but on legendary London spinner Marc French. In fact if there had been a GCSE in the London Club Scene then he'd have been an A* pupil.

But alas, it's been a while since HF touched base with the infamous HeatUK resident, so we thought it was about time we did a bit of swotting up on the near past, present and future - and what better time than ahead of his appearance alongside John 00 Fleming at Twisted on 04th February.

So here goes. You have 15 minutes to read the following interview, but don’t forget to study it carefully as we’ll be testing you later.

Some might call you Mr Heat (well you and the trance scoundrel Ian Betts). How did you first get involved with the promotion?

I met Damian and Anton from Heat in the summer of 2001. They came to see me at the graphic design company I was working for at the time after a recommendation from Penny XLR8, one of my clients. I started work on the 1st backyard party flyer, which was a cheap and cheerful effort which still went down well with the guys. Nothing like the effort put into today’s masterpieces! I carried on doing graphic design work for the guys, and soon I obtained a residency at their first club event at The Rock. They took me on full time at the beginning of 2002.

At Twisted you’ll be playing with the legendary J00F. Is he one of your DJing heroes?

I used to go and see John playing at Sunny Side Up and occasionally down in his home town of Brighton when he was known for playing hard house and trance. He always rocked Sunnys, and I had a lot of respect for him, as I did for a lot of the underground djs in 97/98.

Frenchy at Heat NYE

Heat has really grown as a promotion. There are some great things happening with Heat over the coming year. What’s going on which you can tell us about?

2006 is looking like another year with some bigger and exciting events developing. Our first event of 2006 in March will be showcasing Spencer Freeland at Koko. I have developed a new brand known as Illuminated; the first one was last summer and it took the roof off The Fridge. It featured yours truly and the whole HeatUK dj crew and favourite players, including Twisted’s very own Trevor Mclachlan.

The idea behind Illuminated is to base the night around a featured DJ from the Heat camp and focus on promoting that particular dj. I think the Spencer night will be a killer. This year we shall have Frenchy Illuminated again with possible nights for The Betts and The Tech. Other stuff this year includes South West Four 3, various Academy dates (the next featuring Carl Cox), the PUSH sunday sessions (nice & mucky), Ibiza 2006, and loads more....

Marc French at Illuminated

Do you think you’ll be out in Ibiza again this year?

Yes indeed, and as usual it’s getting bigger and better. It shall be broken up into a hard week and a house week. I shall probably be attending both....

Marc at Addiction with Andy and Alf

You’re pretty much close to the hard trance/trance side of hard dance. Have you ever been tempted by the tougher stuff?

For those that knew me playing pre Heat days I was known as a hard house dj. I used to play at Fevah at The Tube, Solid Sunday, XLR8 etc, where the crowds would have thrown up if they heard too much trance. I think that 2001 was the year that hard house & trance fused which coincided with the beginnings of Heat, which is why the djs that played regularly for us such Grant Thomson, Reynolds, Freeland & Blake created the ‘Heat Sound’. I was the only one which would play a little tougher back then, but I’ve left that sound behind me now.

You’ve just done a remix of 'Bring It’ with Airspace. Any more tracks in the pipe?

I have indeed, ‘The Liberator’ finally gets a release on Global Panic records, plus two other tracks are in the middle of being signed to Pandemic Records. It has been difficult to find a stable for me to become synonymous with, but I feel that Pandemic will be a good outlet for my material. I will be closely associated with Airspace on these projects. I shall also be working with the Bamford - a follow up to ‘Mad & Confused’ is in production at the mo. I am also working with Addiction DJ Ashley James under the guise of Digital Injury. Our first track ‘London Calling’ will be heard at Twisted on the 4th.

Marc French and Ashley James

It’s been a pretty exciting few months for you. You’ve just got married in a whirlwind romance. How did you meet and where did you get married. Did you propose at Heat?

I met Tracey French on The Pulse Boat party last summer. We hung out for a while, realised she was completely wicked and proposed to her after The Heat boat party in August. We were married in New Zealand in December.

Many harder djs are trying their hand at house alongside their harder sounds. Do you have any plans to do this?

I have been djing for probably a lot longer than some may realise. I started with house back in the early nineties at various London clubs such as Paddocks, Cafe De Paris, Villa Stefano etc. on the Glam scene alongside Rampling, Farley & Heller, Rocky & Diesel etc. But these days I am not really interested in pushing the house sound of now, though I am quite happy in a house environment. I shall however be involved in promoting PUSH at The Whitehouse, where I shall be picking my own djs to play house & breaks, and I shall be playing my own old skool set (88–92). I recently played a set for a friend’s party and the place went mental. Should be one to look out for.

Thanks for your time Marc.
