TekNish’s main room debut @ Fridge this Friday 14th July

If you remember funky riffs, hoovers, horns and hard house being the new black, you might then remember zebra print loin cloth and fluffy boots as being part of any self respecting clubbers uniform closet, then you should remember Nish. So regular at parties back in the day that he became almost part of the furniture, if you didn’t see him there maybe you weren’t at the right ones. Now almost 5 years later he makes his main room debut at The Fridge for one of a series of free parties, so I think it’s high time we got inside Nish’s head.
A random invite to the 414 kick-started an avid clubbing career that quickly developed into the promotions side of the scene, where he became a loved member of the XLR8 team. Within a couple of years the music became more than something to dance to for Nish and after some time out travelling he decided to venture onto to the ‘other side’ of the decks. A few months later he played his first set at Afterlife in the Mass and would go on to play at a string of smaller parties around London, all the while appearing on radio shows and fitting in sets as far away as Thailand and India. But, as I learnt, this guy has certainly had an interesting and varied life . . . I really wanted to get down to the nitty gritty and find out how Nish evolved into TekNish — the dj, photographer and crazy man on the dance floor.
So Nish, the main room at the Fridge, nervous, excited or do you feel like Rocky Balboa at the moment?
5 years ago I stood in the Fridge eyeing up the dj and only ever wished that I could stand in that box like him and play to the crowd, thinking it was never possible. I can’t believe that half a decade on that I’ve been given an opportunity to fulfil that dream. Of course I’m excited.
So not nervous at all then?
A few butterflies but I’m too excited to let them bother me, but who knows last minute I might shit myself.
Haha, let’s hope not!! So are there any lucky charms or rituals you perform before you play?
Well I spend a few hours beating up whole carcasses of frozen animals in industrial freezers and running up and down stairs with my personal trainer every day, erm . . . no crap, that’s Rocky, sorry . . . I just a warm up with a couple bevvys really.
You’ve lived in quite a few countries in your life, it must have been an interesting childhood?
Thanks to my parents moving about with their itchy feet I’ve lived in quite a few places over the years. I was born in Liverpool in 1982, then lived in Newcastle and Carlisle till I was 5. We moved to Ahmedabad, India and did all my schooling there; in between I also lived in Saudi Arabia for a total of 1 ½ years over a period of 3 years. Then when I was 17 I moved to London and have lived all over London and it’s suburbia for the last 6 years now.
That’s a lot of places to call home then!
I’m still quite confused on which one to call home; you can take your pick!
So how many languages do you speak?
Fluently I can read, write and speak two languages besides English and understand various other dialects.
Which are? Come on impress us . . .
Hindi and Gujurati but I also know a little bit of Thai and Laotian.
I can say, “hello, how are you in Swahili”, that’s not quite as impressive as you though.
There’s a lot of preconceptions about how somebody from a supposed strict Indian background can move into the hard dance scene?
Luckily for me my culture was never forced upon me, when I got the opportunity to move to London on my own when I was 17 after a year of initial settling down I was introduced to the hard house scene and instantly fell in love with it. It had the energy I always expected music should have.
What’s in your music collection at home, besides hard house and techno, do you listen to other genres as well?
Dance music is a new thing for me . . .
Go on admit it you have East 17 records don’t you . . .
Lol, I’ve heard of them but I couldn’t name a track, but my roots are actually metal and rock music. I love my drum and bass and dub music, but I’m really into the electro and break beats sound as well at the moment and I’ve been building up a collection of it, so watch this space.
So could this see a continued evolution of TekNish into BreaksNish or ElectroNish?
Most definitely but certainly under another guise, I won’t be coming to you for name recommendations though.
So where did the name Teknish come from then?
Initially it was just meant to be Nish but then there was already one from Japan.
After hours and hours of dj name hunting with a few friends, TekNish was born.
How would you best describe your style of music as?
Hard, fast n filthy energised hard house and crossover techno . . . . Basically hard NRG.
No Bhangra included haha.
Tell me, the most bizarre DJ experience you’ve had so far then?
Playing some bouncy hard house in Chiang Mai in Thailand to a club full of roughly 600 up for it Thais.
So why bizarre then?
Because I just never thought in a million years that I would get that sort of response outside the UK. They were just bouncing around like Mexican jumping beans, completely mad for it.
So was this on your travels around South East Asia then? Play anywhere else exotic?
Well I was very lucky that I got a chance to play on the beach in Goa which is famous for its psy trance parties and a couple of parties in Thailand. It was very random as I just turned up there and ended up chatting to one of the resident djs and they invited me to play a guest set.
When you’re not djing what do you do?
I’m at uni studying photography, which is one of my biggest passions and always dreaming about my next travel venture.
What kind of photography makes you Tick-TekNish?
After many bad jokes about Tick Tacks, mice, teknishions on missions and much laughter later . . . sorry . . .

No Tic Tacs for me thank you, I do mostly black and white macro photography, portraiture and wildlife.
So did the photography come along with the involvement in the club scene?
There was a time that I did do club photography, but I mostly ended up doing abstract photos playing with light and effects on the camera, rather than taking the obligatory ‘munted clubber’ photos that promoters generally wanted for parties. This kick started me into the line of thinking that this was a long seated interest and ambition of mine that went much further than just club photography, so I decided to turn into a profession and enroll myself in a degree course.
So how does long study hours for a full time hands on university course combine with being an up and coming dj?
Well so far I’ve been juggling my balls pretty well but from time to time I do drop them, but pick them up straight away and start juggling again.
So how many lectures have you slept through then?
Ask no question tell no lies . . .
You also run a bi-weekly radio show called ‘The Hard Box’, tell us more about that then?
It’s on www.lifefm.co.uk and it’s on every other week on Tuesdays from 10 – 12pm, Life Fm is the UK’s biggest internet radio station, we get listeners from all over the world, Iraq, Japan, the USA, Australia etc. so it’s a real platform to promote this sort of music and the djs.
Any plans on going into the production side then?
I have some studio time booked for later this month with Alex Parsons and I’ve been collaborating with some likeminded djs who also have the same intention of crossing over into the production side of things.
What do you have in store for us at the Fridge then?
It’s pretty much a warm up set as Steelo is playing a breaks set before me, but you can expect some energetic grooves, so I expect to see your arses on the dance floor.
Well I shall wish you luck although I don’t think you need it, I for one shall be on the dance floor shaking my thang for the entirety of your set. I’ve heard you play and enjoyed your radio shows so not to make you nervous or anything but I’m expecting a lot from you, mwah!!

With recent events taking place at the Fridge, it has been decided to bring back the 'party vibe' with a series of FREE PARTIES for the clubbers who have supported the venue over the years and also for those that have never been before.
The Fridge management want to promote the club as being a safe and decent place (as we know it is) and to go out to hear some of the best and upfront music that is available on the hard dance scene played by some of its rising and already established DJ's.
The owners have asked me to put together some line ups for this series of FREE PARTIES that are to take place on Friday 7th, 14th and 21st July. The club will be open from 10.00-6.00 and will be FREE ENTRY! all night so there really is no excuse for not being there and you can bring as many people with you as you like and its NOT GOING TO COST THEM A PENNY TO GET IT!
The bar is now open until 6.00am for alcohol, there will be drinks promotions on for these nights and not forgetting the usual high quality sound and lighting will be in effect, combined this with some of the best up and coming and established talent in the London these parties are definitely going to rock!
See you on the dance floor!
