Music trends come and go and with them the djs who champion them. In this ever changing world of dance music it is now difficult to find a dj that lives up to his reputation. Billy Nasty is one of those djs.
He won his first residency in 1990 and since then has had a career that has even landed him the Guinness book of records. He also runs two record labels — Tortured and Electix as well as founding Theremin Management. The dj agency represents other British djs like Jim Masters, Mark Williams and Phil Perry and many more. Billy Nasty has played all over the world to thousands of clubbers so I felt very privileged that he could fit some time in to answer a few of my questions.
Hi Billy, how are you and what have you been up to?
I’ve recently moved to Brighton so I’ve been unpacking boxes and trying to get my records back in order.
You’re currently working not only on your Tortured label but also your experimental label Electrix. What new releases do you have coming out on each label?
On Tortured we have lined up next is the ‘Machine Driven EP’ by Paul Mac, and on Electrix we have the ‘Body Sequencer EP’ by French electro wizard Dynarec. We have also got a stunning electro 3 track EP by the mighty Advent lined up for Electrix too, so a few tasty treats ready to launch over the next 2 months.
Everywhere I have looked and have seen that people mark you as one of the forefathers of electronic music. How have you perceived you role in the growth of the scene?
Thanks for the compliment, you flatter me. But to tell you the truth I’m just one of the many cogs in the big machine. The scene has many many influential people but again I’m glad you find me so important.
You created the Tortured label in the 1990s as you were frustrated by the Techno scene in the UK at the time. Do you think you have achieved what you set out to do?
I like to think we played our part. I’m extremely proud of the music we’ve realised and what the labels have achieved.
Who do you think currently is pushing the sounds of techno?
I’m a big fan of the minimal sound of Luciano, Villalobos and Mathew Johnson but on the more banging tip its still the usual big time players like Advent, Simms, Beyer, Umek who are still keeping techno moving.
DJs such as Sasha have now moved away from vinyl and CDs and are working directly with companies creating new equipment all the time. Is this something you see yourself doing?
I’m more of an traditionalist and still only really use vinyl as it’s my life’s biggest love, although I own an I-pod which I’m really fond of, ha ha. I can’t see me changing from my favourite set up of 2 turntables n a mixer, but sadly djs who still see it my way are getting quite hard to find? Which as a real vinyl lover, I think it’s a real shame.
You have played in so many places to so many people. Is there still one event that you have on your ‘wish list’?
I haven’t managed yet to play in Argentina or on 1 of the floats at the Berlin love parade, which I’m sure both would be highly memorable. I have been lucky enough to have played most places during my career, so the last thing I want to sound is ungrateful.
You’re playing at Party Proactive on the 2nd September. Of course you have played for them before so with this in mind which parts are you looking forward to re-visiting, especially considering it’s just moved venue.
I’m looking forward to doing my thing for the mad up for it crowd and hopefully living up to the compliment you paid me earlier. I hope that everyone enjoys my set as much as I enjoy playing to them.
Between your producing and DJing, the past 17 years have been pretty full. What have been your most memorable moments?
It’s always hard to pick out any particular highlight as I’ve experienced so many magical experiences whilst travelling n DJ’ing but I guess the few tribal gatherings and the first 2 dance valleys in Holland and many a mad time in Brazil has been had also.
Have their been any moments you’ve thought . . . “Aghhhh, did I just do that?!”
There has been but I’m not silly enough to tell you, ha ha!
And then any moments you’ve thought, “Wow, I really did that!”
There’s been many great atmospheres experienced and mad cheers and sweaty hand shakes at the end of sets, they’re the times when you think . . . man, this is the best job in the world!
Any final words of wisdom for the people . . . ?
Don’t give up on vinyl and when mixing records . . . blend it and don’t bell-end it.

Aye Karumba! Time flies when you are having fun, after the massive success of our launch night in May and our mammoth party in July it was far from an easy task to put together a line up that we thought would once again push Party Proactive on to the forefront of the UK clubbing scene, but here we go…
Headlining the main room DJ PREACH, we are massively excited to welcome DJ PREACH, all the way from Canada for his first EVER London appearance. DJ PREACH has been making huge waves on the international scene from closing the massive Dance Valley festival in front of crowds of 40 thousand to smashing dance floors in America, Germany, South America and all over the world, pushing the boundaries of dance music with a sound that won’t be out of place on the most driving of dance floors, hard and funky all the way baby! DJ PREACH is being joined by techno legend BILLY NASTY, alongside the undisputable king of hard dance ANDY FARLEY. SAM TOWNEND from Housewives Choice fame makes the trip from Leeds and Proactive resident the *TING* battles it out with Riot! head honcho and all round party animal ED REAL, to finish us all off in true Party Proactive style!
In the legendary T2 we promise a cocktail of tuff house and electro, with the one and only house music star GUY WILLIAMS, resident for the infamous Blue Cube events, including DTPM at Fabric and Fiction at the Cross. JAMES FITCH resident for Chameleon / Twitch makes his Proactive debut, the return of PAGANO promises to keep those feet stomping alongside the fantastic Proactive residents.
After their storming Proactive debut in May which saw the VIP room heaving to one serious party vibe, FUNDAMENTAL are back! FUNDAMENTAL take over the Juno Room with special guests LOVE FISH, residents for legendary London House event, Fervormore.
