Insekt breaks down the barriers with Andy Farley

Reported by Club_Insekt & Jennie B / Submitted 10-01-07 02:35

Andy Farley is a DJ that needs no introduction, having helped shape the sound of hard dance as we know it. A true clubbers’ DJ, Andy is one of the few that has played for all the major promotions, including Trade, Godskitchen, Sundissential, Frantic and Heat. Headlining major festivals such as Creamfields, Global Gathering and Dance Valley, it’s safe to say that Andy has climbed to the top of the mountain.

Not confined to spinning the anthems and rocking the dance floors, Andy has influenced the sound of hard dance itself by getting stuck into studio projects and creating dance floor destroyers. His most notable productions are ‘The Killer’ which he has just given a make over, ‘Bring it Back’, ‘M.B.S’, ‘Devastating’, ‘Khemikal Imbalance’ and more recently the massive ‘Barriers’.

Andy has helped influence the scene by leading the way for others to follow, while collaborating with some of the finest producers in the industry and across the genre like BK, D.A.V.E The Drummer, Colin Barratt, Dynamic Intervention, Dave Parkinson, Paul Maddox and Nick Sentience to create some truly inspiring tracks that have helped set trends.

Having played the special final ever set for Insekt at Fire club in July, Andy makes his return for Insekt’s January spectacular at The Fridge, where he headlines the event alongside Paul Glazby, Karim, Digital Kid and Superfast Oz.

Jennie B caught a few moments with Mr Farley in anticipation of his upcoming Insekt set…

Firstly congratulations on the new signing to Red Management. I’ve had the pleasure of working with them in the last few weeks and I must say Red has to be one the best agencies that the scene has at the moment, with a first class roster! How’s it going so far for you?

It’s going really well, I’ve got plenty of bookings coming in so I’m, set for a hectic 2007!

You’ve been playing back in London and the UK on a more regular basis in the last few months; what were you up to during your time away?

I had a lot of international gigs and was also doing a fair amount of studio work for my Blue Cubed label.

How do you think the scene has changed over the last decade and which direction do you think it will go over the coming five years?

It’s certainly expanded a great deal, with many different styles of music being played now which is good and healthy for the scene. Hopefully this will continue over the next 5 years, with the sound continuing to evolve.

It seems these days almost everybody wants to be a DJ. What advice would you give to budding up and comings?

Practice practice practice!! Do plenty of demos to sell yourself to a promoter. The important thing as well is to be different. Don’t just do a demo of the biggest tidy tunes etc, try and think outside the box and do something that will catch their attention. Also don’t expect things to happen overnight, it can be a long frustrating journey, but stick to it if it’s what you really want to do.

Are there any up and coming DJs or producers that have impressed you over the past 12 months?

Music-wise I’ve been loving stuff from Valentino Kanzyani, Ali Wilson, Umek, DJ Preach, Hertz, Vinylgroover & Redhead, Digital Kid, Colin Barratt, Dom Sweeten & Bk. DJ-wise I have to confess I haven’t really caught a great many sets this year unfortunately due to being in and out the door a lot of the time!

6.)Your latest release on your label Blue Cubed was by Dave Randall and Captain Tinrib — ‘Jackpot’. Have you got any exciting plans for the label in 2007?

I put it on hold after Jackpot to concentrate on doing some hard house material but will be looking at putting some more stuff out in 2007. Watch this space!

You’ve also had various tunes out this year, including a personal favourite of mine, ‘Barriers’ that you produced with Colin Barratt. What tunes have been doing it for you lately?

The next few Vicious releases: Paul Glazby — ‘Catabolic’, Weirdo — ‘Beyond’, Nik Denton — ‘Freak Right Out’ & ‘Over Heated’ and Defective Audio — ‘Freakin It’ are all huge for me at the moment, as well as my own tunes ‘Crashed’, ‘The Killer’ remix, the 3 tracks I’ve done as a collaboration with Olive Grooves, Paul King’s remix of Tony de Vit’s ‘Burning Up’, Olive Grooves’ remix of Steve Thomas & Jon Mills’ ‘Time Suspension’, the Equinox remix of Ian M — ‘Deep Swarm’ and BK — ‘Mine’s A Double’ are all doing great things for me as well.

You’re playing for Insekt again at the end of the month alongside Paul Glazby, Karim and Superfast Oz to name but a few. What is it that makes Insekt special for you?

It gives me a great opportunity to play at my hardest and dig out some forgotten classics too.

The last Insekt at Fire was both a special moment for the boys and also your debut. How did it go for you, as you played the last ever set there?

It was great fun and I had got sent a whole load of new tracks that week so it was perfect timing to unleash them!

What was the last non dance album you bought/listened to?

I haven’t bought any for a while to be honest. I’m currently listening to my 80s music folder on my Ipod!

When did you last wear a suit and why?

At my first gay wedding back in September!

And last but not least, a few quick fire questions:

Sweet or savoury?

Savoury

CD or vinyl?

I play pretty much 100% off CD now as I don’t get sent much vinyl any more, but my heart will always be with vinyl.

Spice Girls or Take That?

Take That

Dogs or cats?

Dogs

Thanks for you time Andy and see you on the 27th!
