Interview for Knowwhere with Kristian and Matt Lorraine

As one of London’s most popular trance & hard dance events, Knowwhere needs no introduction. The legendary night returns on April 6th with a belter of a line up including the infamous Woody Van Eyden and Alex M.O.R.P.H. Another special feature at this storming event will be the introduction of Psy-trance at Knowwhere, the most talked about dance genre in the last year. The chaps at Knowwhere have also decided to have this event as a back to back special, with all the DJs choosing a partner to join them up on the decks for some mindblowing sets… ooh yeah baby!
Portsmouth's up and coming Psy-Co resident Matt Loraine has chosen globe trotting Antiworld resident Kristian, one of the UK’s biggest psy-trance DJ’s. The duo will take us on Knowwhere’s first ever psy-trance trip, and what a treat this promises to be. I recently caught up with both Kristian and Matt and asked them a few questions about the Psy-trance scene and dance music in General.
KW: Playing at Knowwhere will be a first for both of you, what are your feelings on spinning psy-trance at one of the UK biggest trance / hard dance events?
Kristian: I’m super chuffed about this. Knowwhere is one of the nights I have always wanted to DJ at. I have always believed that psy should be played at other nights (not only at psy-trance exclusive nights). Knowwhere have a reputation for booking quality trance DJ's and I’m very excited to be playing the sound I love alongside these great DJ's.
Matt: Very happy indeed. Knowwhere is a massive night with a very good reputation and I think they will love a bit of psy-trance. The style has changed a lot and there is a wide spectrum of sounds, bouncy basslines and trancy riffs. I can’t wait.
KW: Last weekend you both played at Psy-Co, a night that has been causing Pompy to buzz big time. How was it?
Matt: Psy-Co was amazing! Psy-trance is massive and played all over the world, but it is new to Portsmouth and has really taken off. The atmosphere was fresh and exciting. We have another 6 Psy-Co events lined up over the next year, with some
world famous acts and DJ's.
Kristian: FANTASTIC! A fresh up for it crowd, there for the music, no attitude, no politics. How it should be!
KW: Which artists are inspiring you at the moment? And give us an insight on some of the goodies you are going to blast out of the speakers at Knowwhere at Heaven?
Kristian: I know it sounds biased, but Dejavoo, my new live act with computer wizz kid DJ Kalimamboh, is just getting better and better, so of course I play many of our tracks in my sets. I can create a story in my sets as we have funky & melodic and dark & deep psy. Up and coming DJ Fortu is also getting very phat with his tunes and I will play a couple of his. Oforia, who I think had the best album last year, full of variety also gets played, along with his fellow Israeli buddies Krunch, Domestic, Astrix and Xi.
Matt: I got into Psy-trance on my first visit to Thailand, ever since then I’ve been hooked. Kristian has been a big influence on me, Astrix as well. Both are trying to bridge the gap between Psy and Trance. Also Trev, who runs Psy-Co, Jim and Jenny from Hedonics, and all my lovely fans out there.
KW: This Knowwhere will not only be special for its introduction of psychedelic trance but for its back to back line up, with everyone paired up. What do you guys reckon on back 2 backs? Any pros or cons?
Matt: I was playing alongside Anthony Dean on a Steaming boat party and Pablo heard me play. They both loved it and reckoned that the main room at Heaven would love it too! This will be my first back to back. I think it’s good; we will both buzz off each other.
Kristian: Love to do them every now and again. Matt and I have very similar styles, and I was well happy when he chose me to join him in this b2b extravaganza. It’s all pros here, no cons.
KW: Kristian your tracks under the Dejavoo moniker together with DJ Kalimamboh have been turning heads recently with the likes of Christopher Lawrence, one of the many examples of the buzz Psy-trance has been causing amongst many of the big mainstream Trance DJ’s. What are your opinions on this?
Matt: Psy-trance has changed a lot; it’s now so well produced. Dejavoo, Astrix and myself are trying to bridge the gap between psy and trance with our bouncy fat bass lines and trance rifts.
Kristian: This is great, why not. I reckon everyone who could potentially like it should hear good music like this; you just need to give them the chance to discover it. I am really happy that DJ’s like Chris Lawrence, John 00 and others, who reach a bigger audience, are playing Psy-trance. And as for the purists who think this is too commercial, bollocks! Does it matter who listens to it? Just so long as they enjoy it.
KW: What were the most memorable gigs for you guys last year, which ones stick in your mind the most?
Kristian: Wow, difficult one. One of the dates I played in Japan in November was incredible, I ended up lassoing my head phones over me head, the crowd was energetic as fuck. The boat party and Psy-Co both in Pompy were awesome. Antiworld at Brixton Academy, the Transient records party that Chichime hosted at a packed out Telegraph, Slinky as well, how could I forget. Quest 4 Goa in Portugal, Rave at Se1, Dejavoo's live UK debut at Antiworld and Germany where we played live as well, too many to mention them all.
Matt: When Astrix flew in from Israel to Portsmouth for Steaming vs Antiworld, it was the best party ever to hit Portsmouth. The production was amazing; with Funktion 1 system, 15 projections and lasers. The atmosphere was electric and a lot of people that came had never heard psy-trance and they loved it. Chichime 7th birthday was wicked, we had a full coach come up from Portsmouth. I played 2.30 till 4am and had a standing ovation at the end.
KW: You’ll both be playing at the Antiworld 07/07/07 Festival this summer. How much are you looking forward to this event?
Matt: I can't wait, this is set to be one of the biggest dance festivals ever to hit the UK. I’ll be playing in front of 6,000 ravers with world famous acts! I will also be playing in Ireland and Belgium too.
Kristian: Yes indeed, Antiworld is one of the worlds biggest indoor events and now they’re doing a festival with the biggest psy line-up the UK has ever seen, plus a host of other big names. Of course I am looking forwards to this big time.
KW: Do you have any other interests apart from the DJing?
Kristian: I love most sorts of music and I am a big movie and documentary buff. I hate cheesy chat shows and big brother and all that shit, but I watch a lot of TV, mainly documentaries and movies, stuff like deep epic, war, history and underground, cult ones.
Matt: I like football and fishing when I am not DJing. I also love the outdoors.
KW: What are your biggest influences outside Psy-trance?
Matt: I played hard dance for 10 years and have played with some world class hard dance DJ’s, Tin rib, Sy, Mark EG, Dave the Drummer, John 00 Fleming and Colin Dale, at some wicked party's, Oblivion, Forensic, Lunatic, Steaming. These DJ’s and nights were a very big influence.
Kristian: Phew, again too many to mention. But in no particular order, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Ultravox, Talk Talk, The Human League, Gary Numan, Georgio Moroder, Ennio Morricone, Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Jean Micheal Jarre, The Sisters Of Mercy, Led Zeppelin, U2, The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Moby, prog / tribal / electro house and some breaks and trance.

Knowwhere Announce Their Unique Big Bank Holiday B2B Special
Good Friday 6th April
London’s favourite trance superclub announce their Easter Bank Holiday special: a B2B night with a real difference. The sort of twist the Knowwhere crew have been adding to their nights for well over 5 years now, meaning they can still guarantee an unbeatable night of trance-filled fun, with an atmosphere that just cannot be matched.
The Knowwhere team approached some of our favourite DJs, past, present and future and asked them the question “who would YOU like to play back 2 back with at Knowwhere? This has resulted in one of the best ever KW DJ line-ups being secured. This sort of team work will mean the music will flow from start to finish, the hallmark of every KW night.
Heading up proceedings KW welcome to Heaven for the first time, the production duo, Woody Van Eyden & Alex Morph. These 2 big guns have remixed tracks for the likes of Armin Van Buuren and world number one Paul Van Dyk. Alongside their record label ‘Fenology’, their ‘Heaven’s Gate’ radio show and a remix schedule that reads like a who’s who of dance music, we’re pleased to have secured their biggest DJ set in London for 2007.
Next up is “Escape” (Swansea) resident, Big Al, who will be playing alongside the founder of KW himself, the one and only, Pablo.
For something a little bit different, there is Antiworld resident, kristian, B2B with the South Coast’s fast rising star, Matt Loraine. By popular demand, KW also brings you one of London’s most popular Trance DJ’s, Jurrane, B2B with underground party “Planet Angel” legend, Sly One. Of course, no Knowwhere night would be complete without Adam and The Ant (Adam White and Anthony Dean) in full attire, spinning the tunes the crowd always love.
For those of you that like your music harder, the relaunch of the Hardwhere room brings you a line-up covering the spectrum of all things hard. It is going to more than put the fun back into hard dance.
From Tasty, we have the man himself, Billy “Daniel” Bunter, fast becoming a household name since the TV adverts for Hardcore Classics, and Jon Doe, more often seen under the guise ‘CLSM’, will be playing a classics set, to give us a fine flavour of hard house history.
Then there are hard house legends, Ed Real, the man behind the hugely successful Riot! and Trackitdown.com and Justin Bourne, producer, DJ & head honcho of Short Circuit Recordings, performing an exclusive B2B premiere.
Impact Records pioneers, Steve Blake and Phil Reynolds will be playing the best in hard trance, proving that ‘hard’ and ‘trance’ are definitely two words that work together!!
Finally, Hardwhere is proud to present their new resident, Andy McCall, playing B2B with rising star, J.K, who has recently worked on awesome productions with Technikal (or Alf Bamford as some closer friends might know him).
Completing the line-up is the Funky Room, with a special B2B2B2B….Funk-a-Tronic, Lizzie Curious, Semi and Simon The Fireman – an eclectic combination never before put together!
Knowwhere’s unique big Bank Holiday B2B special is a one-off event that simply cannot be missed.
