WTF?! Rave breaks on the moon with Billy 'Daniel' Bunter

Reported by Ben Gomori / Submitted 04-06-07 16:16

We all know Billy 'Daniel' Bunter for his hard dance label Honeypot Records, his hard dance and hardcore events Tasty and Love Muzik, his hard dance and hardcore sets with the occasional old skool set thrown in. But it now seems that he's not content with smacking it in up to 3 different genres at once, as he's been delving into and helping to pioneer a new genre called rave breaks (or "hardcore breaks" to some). What's that all about eh?

We'll let Bunter explain all, suffice to say it's a new take on an old sound that is shifting 10s of 1000s of compilations at the moment and it's popping up in clubs up and down the country. Moondance are featuring the genre in their hardcore room at their Summer Festival at SeOne on June 16th, where Bunter will exclusively launch his new RaveBreaks compilation for Ministry of Sound Records. You might not read about it in the press, but it's definitely making waves out there the UK's clubbing underground. So without further ado, let's catch up with the man like Dan and see what this whole phenomenon is all about.

We last spoke to you in July of last year, when I came down to watch you doing your radio show. How are things going with your show? Have you changed the format at all or stuck with the usual formula?

I have had to put the radio show on hold due to being so busy in the studio. I have 2 TV advertised albums on the go at the moment, a number of singles across various styles, as well as remixing Prodigy, Rozalla, Camille Jones and Fedde Le Grand to name a few. My week is taken up with 4 days in the studio, 1 day admin, and a full weekends DJing. It’s hectic at the moment so radio had to take a back seat.

What’s the plan with Tasty for the rest of the year? Will there be another party?

As with radio, Tasty has had to take a back seat, but the 6th Birthday is confirmed for later on in the year and we have a number of tour dates around the country. We are doing Innovation in Spain, as well as the Innovation reunion party in August, and we are also co-hosting the next Helter Skelter album launch at Ministry.

Do you think the hard dance scene needs a kick up the arse?

I’m loving the Hard Dance scene at the moment. Those who are going to the parties are the die hard fans, and it’s getting very bouncy and fun again.

Right, what is all this “rave breaks” malarkey we’ve been hearing about? Who invented it? Why is it good?

Rave Breaks, it’s the fresh new sound of the rave scene, born out of all the great things about dance music in the past 20 years and adding a modern breakbeat twist. There is a number of us including Slipmatt, Peacemaker, Shimano, Al Storm, Twista, Sparky, Rat Pack, MC WhizzKid, Karen Danzig and Niki Mak to name a few, who have been officially remixing all the old classics or making fresh new music to rock raves such as Raindance, Moondance, Slammin Vinyl & Epidemik. It’s really taken off - mine and Slipmatt’s last album sold nearly 100,000 copies and features a CD dedicated to this sound. If you want to check out more, I’m running an exclusive party at Babalou in Brixton on Thursday 7th June alongside Slipmatt and Raindance. People can email us on can_u_feel_it@hotmail.co.uk and we will put them on the VIP guest list. Also for the full main room blast of the music, the next big party where the sound will be featured is Moondance.

Has the whole rave breaks movement given you a new lease of life in terms of production? Has it given you fresh inspiration?

Yeah it’s very exciting; we have literally been remixing the biggest tracks of all time, as well as all the new biggies. The fresh music coming through is awesome as well. On one side you have all the old skool DJs playing the stuff, on the other side all the breaks DJs are supporting it as well. The older generation can get in to it as it has the vibe of the old skool, and the new generation can get in to it as it has the modern vibe.

Which other genres have been tickling your fancy recently? We’ve had dubstep, nu-rave, baile funk and all sorts making waves recently.

I love all music, the hardcore scene is still on fire, hard house is getting its bounce back, breaks is rocking the old skool scene and I’m loving dirty and twisted house. I’ve gotta say I’m feeling the dubstep and grime too, my son’s 12 and listens to it all the time and has been educating me a lot.

You will be launching the Ministry of Sound Rave Breaks album at Moondance on June 16th at SeOne. Why did you choose Moondance to host the launch party?

It was the logical thing to do, as it was the biggest rave in London close to the release date of the next album and it fucking rocks!

The DnB line-ups have been getting bigger and bigger at Moondance recently. Although the genre is absolutely massive, it doesn’t seem to get much media attention. Why do you think this is?

The media hasn’t got a fucking clue. Drum & Bass stands tall and has some of the most influential DJs and producers behind it of the past 20 years. It’s the same as hardcore and old skool; we have sold nearly 300,000 albums in 18 months, Breeze, Styles and Hixxy have sold half a million, yet we get very little coverage. Maybe a lot of the secret to our success or Drum & Bass’s success lies in not needing the over hype and medias approval?

Good point. Do you still go record shopping or do you do all your stuff online?

I do it all, record shopping, online buying and downloading, get sent promos via email and post. Play music fresh out of the studio, it’s my job not to leave a stone unturned. The only thing I don’t do anymore is cut dubs.

When was the last time you fluffed a mix?

Hardcore Heaven at the weekend! I thought the record I was bringing in was a 48 bar intro but it was 32, so I mixed the break down over the beats. It was perfectly in time, but I really wanted people to hear the break down of the tune. I used to get the right hump with my self when I got little things like that wrong, but I’m only human and on average a weekend play over a 100 tunes, so I’ll let my self get away with a slight imperfection!

But don’t just listen to us – listen to what our headliners have got to say about the phenomenon that is Moondance!

“I used to go raving and pay my money to get into Moondance the same way that thousands of other people have done over the years, d’ya know what I mean? So it’s cool that they’re coming back into it, getting the drum ‘n’ bass involved. Everyone who’s going to Moondance is going to party, so you know it’s going to be a good one.” – Friction

“Moondance always get the right crowd. It’s got an attitude-free crowd, there’s nice girls there, sexy girls, people dressing up, and on top of that they always get good DJs. They always get a good phat line-up – which is perfect. That’s what people want – phat line-up, no trouble – perfect.” – Mark Ratpack

“What I like about Moondance is the versatility of the music played, and especially all under one roof. Some people I know, they wanna go here to listen to that, they wanna go there to listen to something else...at the end of the day, music has no boundaries and it’s nice to have all that under the same roof. And you don’t really get that in a lot of places. And it’s great to have that in London – there’s a happy vibe, there’s no trouble, it’s a great.” – Nicky Blackmarket
