Office work with Xerox & Illumination as they help introduce psy trance at Antiworld 070707

Reported by Harderfaster / Submitted 04-07-07 14:27

This weekend’s Antiworld 070707 festival presents one of the biggest psy trance line-ups ever seen in the UK. Among the many acts over the three day celebration of all things electronic, Infected Mushroom pop their UK festival cherry and play their first live set outdoors in this country, while local hero Simon Posford aka Hallucinogen aka Shpongle plays live and DJs alongside HOMmega’s Astrix, Chemical Crew cowboys Skazi and father and son John Phantasm and Eskimo — well so long as Phantasm Jnr doesn’t let his rock n roll lifestyle get the better of him and miss the plane not once but twice again this time!

Astrix cruised into the DJmag Top 100 at 75 in 2005 then shot to 41 in 2006, reflecting his popularity at the massive outdoor festivals in Brazil as much as his production genius. Yet just as Astrix’s rock and electro-inspired interpretation of psy trance crosses over to a more commercial audience, at the same time the music is going back where it belongs — outside, in a field, where it is designed to be enjoyed. Psy trance has so many layers to it, some of which can be missed altogether when listened to in a small dark dingy club. And with the sound system these guys are bringing in, you’re going to need some fresh air.

Other full on psy trance headliners playing live at 070707 include GMS (the Growling Mad Scientists), Talamasca, Dejavoo, Sinewave and M-Klome, while the entire HOMmega roster are in town to celebrate their tenth year in the music business. Founded by Eyal Yankovich, HOMmega has become a world leader in a very short time, covering everything from the more mainstream sounds of Astrix to the more cutting edge electro of Ace Ventura.

Somewhere between the two lies the music of Xerox & Illumination, otherwise known as Moche Keinan and Amir Dvir. Veterans of a constantly growing scene in Israel, they make some of the most cutting edge stuff around by bringing sounds as diverse as breaks, electro, techno and metal to the dancefloor, and doing so in such a constantly euphoric and driving manner that they manage to cross over into a new level.

After seeing Xerox & Illumination tear the roof off Brixton Academy at the launch party of their new album, ‘The Beast Within’, at Psychedelic Academy last month, it seemed like a good opportunity to track these production wizards down and see what the beasts are all about.

You’ve both been in the music industry for a few years now. For those who don’t know you, please tell us a bit about yourselves. How did you start out? Did you always want to make music or was it something that you fell into over time?

Our names are Moshe Keinan and Amir Dvir, both from Tel Aviv, Israel. We both started writing electronic music in the middle of the 90s when the scene was still young and fresh. Both breathing music before we started creating our own, Moshe as a DJ in clubs and radio stations in Israel and Amir as a guitar player in young heavy metal bands. We always knew that music was something we wanted to do in life, not only as a hobby and we feel very lucky to do so.

You hooked up in 2002 and haven’t looked back. When did you first meet and what made you decide to work together? Is it always easy to work together in the studio or do you often argue about the way you think something should sound?

We were friends for a few years before we started working together. We first met at HOMmega where Moshe was a partner in the early days of the company.

After five years working together we were thinking on the same frequency, knowing what the other one likes or dislikes so we try not to argue at all. If something doesn’t fit for one, we take it out or try to make it better. We are not too sentimental about leads or sounds and it makes the work much more easier and fun in the studio.

Why the name Xerox and Illumination? You must get sick of people asking if you have a passion for photocopying (sorry…)!

It’s funny that you mention that, we never thought about it... You might be right... Maybe we are photophiles!

What inspired you both to first start producing and how did you learn to make music? Do you believe that music production is something that can be taught or is it a natural talent you have to be born with?

For sure it’s the combination of both, you’ve got to have the talent for music to be able to put things in the right place in the right groove but some are more talented and some are less like everything in life.

Sound is something you have to learn and practice to get a good result. Technique is something you learn all the time and improved on day to day. With new technology released everyday, you must update and learn all the time, or you will stay behind.

Your brand of psy trance incorporates many different sounds from metal, techno, breaks and electro, creating something new and certainly very uplifting. How would you describe the Xerox and Illumination sound?

We think you described it quite well. We try to bring in many kinds of electronic music genres into trance while keeping it danceable and powerful at the same time.

Who or what would you say were your key musical influences growing up? And now?

The musicians who got us into this music were artists like Juno Reactor, Hallucinogen, Man With No Name, Eat Static, DJ James Monro, X-Dream and many more quality artists from that time. Today there are many young artists who are doing a great job. We like everything that is fresh, innovative and not a copy of something else.

The first time I ever saw you play was at the launch of your second album ‘XI’ at the Fridge in 2005 and I was blown away, yet that must’ve been a much smaller venue than you’re used to playing in. Did you enjoy the gig? And how has your sound changed and evolved since ‘XI’?

Sure, that party at the Fridge really kicked ass, sometimes the smaller parties are the better ones, where you can really feel the warmth of the crowd and not just see a carpet of people. That album was a major step in our career when we really found the style and direction for Xerox & Illumination.

We tried to keep that style in the new album, but to bring more elements from the electro and breakbeat scene this time.

Your new album sounds to me like you’ve gone on more of an electro trip than in previous productions. Do you see electro being the way of the future, or are you noticing new trends in music already? What kind of material are you working on in the studio at the moment, or are you having a break to tour your new album?

Electro is for sure the most breakthrough genre in the last two years. All over the world it’s starting to get into the trance parties in that way or another and because we also like it and appreciate this music, we thought it’ll be interesting to combine it together with full on music.

At the moment we are sitting at the studio making one more full on track before our upcoming summer tour and in the future we plan to explore more music genres. We don’t like to be stuck on one style of music, as an artist we believe that you must explore new directions all the time or else it gets boring.

Moshe, you’ve actually been signed to HOMmega since 1997 and this is your seventh album so it’s very fitting that you’re headlining the 070707 festival. You were the first artist signed to HOMmega, making you a veteran of the psy trance scene. And Amir, you’d already released three albums under your Luminus guise before you joined forces. In the last ten years you both must’ve seen a lot of changes in HOMmega and in the psy trance scene in general. How do you think things have improved in the last ten years? And if you could do anything to make the scene better, what would it be?

The scene today is much more professional and organized then before and the crowds are bigger which shows that the scene is still growing.

As an artist, you can now live your life from trance, something that was very hard 10 years ago. We just hope it’ll continue growing over the years and be more and more professional.

Amir, your parents came over to the UK to watch you play at Psychedelic Academy 3 last month and from what I saw they really enjoyed your set. They must’ve been very proud of you. Have both your sets of parents always been happy with your choice if career or did it take them a while to take it seriously and come around?

It took them a while to really understand what we’re doing, but after a while they saw that we tour around the world with our music and get worldwide attention so they respected and trusted our decisions. Today both of our parents are very proud and happy with what we do with our lives.

For the techies reading this, what kind of software do you prefer to use in the studio? Having just started a Logic course myself, I’m in complete awe at the possibilities it presents.

We use Cubase SX, it’s much more common in Israel, like Logic in the UK.

From looking at your CD case I can see that guitars and the violin were used when making your new album. Is it a challenge trying to incorporate many different instruments into your sound?

We wouldn’t say a challenge, more of an experience in trance music. It’s always fun to put some human touch inside all of that electronica.

What’s your favourite piece of hardware in the studio?

The Roland SH101 and JP8000 Synths.

So much of the world’s psy trance comes out of Israel. Why do you think that is?

There is something about the Israeli mentality that so fits trance music, maybe it’s the hot weather, maybe it’s because of all the wars over the years that there’s all this pressure in the people that must be released in some way.

Overall Israeli people like to have fun a lot and get crazy and that’s what trance is all about.

You’re headlining the main stage of the 070707 festival along with the rest of the entire HOMmega roster to celebrate ten years of the label. Have you all played at the same festival before or is this a first for psy trance?

There has only been one other time that all HOMmega was on the same together and that was the first Solaris festival in Brazil in the year 2002.

What can your fans reading this expect from your set at 070707?

We will present our new album.

The 070707 festival has one of the biggest psy trance line-ups the UK has ever seen, as well as a stunning selection of techno, breaks, hard dance and chill. Is there anyone playing at the festival you’re hoping to check out, or will you be sticking around the HOMmega stage?

Apart from the trance artists we will check Coldcut and Thomas Schumacher.

Other than 070707, what plans do you have for the summer? And beyond?

We will start our summer tour at 070707. From there we will fly straight to Brazil (HOMmega 10 Years Party — Tribe), Australia, Japan (SOS Festival) and Portugal (HOMmega 10 Years festival — Freedom). For the future it’s a bit hard to tell now, we just hope that everything will go as it is already and continue getting better.

Thanks for your time Moshe and Amir and look forward to seeing you again at 070707!

Great interview. Loving the new album, which I bought at the 070707 festival. Even faver than last album X&I. Missed the Xerox & Illumination set and most of the Hommega sets at 070707 unfortunately. Hmmm, when's 10th Hommega party at the Freedom festival in Portugal?
