Brow gives us a Warning ahead of his new residency

Reported by Jazzy / Submitted 13-07-07 21:03

You might have seen him on a dancefloor near you, arm in the air and a smile on his face. Known to his close mates as an encyclopaedia of music and respected by many for his passion for the scene, he has just been made resident at Warning. No better time then for Jazzy to get the low-down the brain behind the Brow.

Of course after reading this you’ll be able to take part in the investiture yourself by making your way down to Brixton’s Subsouth this coming Saturday. But first lets find out exactly what you might be missing if you don’t!

How long have you been DJing and how did you get started?

A long time!! I first got decks when I was 17 back in ’95 and got them mainly to play hardcore and drum & bass, which I was into when I was at school. However a few trips to Camden Palace in ‘96 and a copy of Trade Vol. 4 on CD really opened my ears. I taught myself to mix properly and started making regular trips to Pure Groove where I was exposed to the likes of Tripoli Trax and Tinrib. From that point on I knew it was what I wanted to do.

How would you define your style?

Hmm, a tough and chunky fusion of techno, hard house and NRG with energy and groove.

When did you first play out and how did it go?

My very first gig was with a friend of mine and I filled in for the regular Friday night DJ at Greenwich Uni – a fair few years ago now! It was quite daunting at first playing in front of that many people and not being sure if we had accessible music for them. But it went very well and they asked us to fill in on a number of occasions.

Tell us how your residency at Warning came about?

Darren the promoter was willing to give me a chance to impress and I guess I did. I remember going on at 11 when people were starting to arrive, looked up after about 15 minutes and the place was totally rocking! When I came off the reaction from people was very pleasing, especially as it helped make a cracking party.

Were you surprised? How did it feel?

Yes and no. I know what I can do, but at the same time I’m quite humble, so when they told me I was over the moon.

You have also been trying your hand at production; give us a quick insight as to what you’ve been cooking up.

I have recently made two tracks with my fellow Warning resident Paul Batten – Notice Me and Stay on the Scene’, two chunky but funky hard house tracks. Feedback and crowd reaction has been very positive for both. I’ve also just finished a new track Higher which I’m really very excited about.

Can you tell us a bit more about it and what else can we expect to hear from you in the coming months?

It’s a tough, chunky, no nonsense techno/NRG track inspired by the old Steve Thomas trade style, but with my own mark stamped on it. In the pipeline there’s Sloppy Jalopy, a hard NRG track I’ve been working with Paul and there’ll be one or two new bits ready for Warning so listen out!

How does it feel to stand on the dance floor and hear other people play your tracks?

Lucy Fur first played a track of mine a called The Gathering a couple of years ago at Hard House Academy. When the main rift dropped in the break the place went bonkers. Absolutely without a doubt the best rush I’ve ever had, an unbelievable feeling!

Who and what have been your major inspirations and influences over the years?

Steve Thomas and Tony De Vit were big influences on me musically and I learnt to mix from an old Pete Wardman CD. Andy Farley is inspiring each and every time I hear him play. Karim and Johnny Fierce both blew me away the first time I heard them play and no-one has influenced me more than the French enigma.

Who is really producing the goods for you at the moment?

Karim, as always, but his current stuff really is a cut above – very techno! Tim Stokes, one to watch, is also making some excellent tracks at the minute that are really doing it for me. I’m also really looking forward to hearing Jon BW at Warning, I’ve been very impressed with his brand of hard house.

You are known by your mates as an encyclopaedia for music, why is this?

Haha! I suppose it’s because I have a good memory for the old stuff and can recognise a ripped rift here and there.

Given the choice of any artist in the world, who would you most like to collaborate with and why?

That’s a tough question. There are some excellent producers and engineers out there, but Dave Owens for me is the best engineer in the business. When I feel that I’m good enough, I’d love to do a track with Karim as well.

What parties and promotions would you most like to play in the future?

Well I’ve been going to Twist since its Fire days and would love to play there. I’ve been to Storm and Polysexual on a number of occasions and thoroughly enjoyed myself each time so definitely them too. Anywhere really that has a good system and an up-for-it crowd!

What are the 3 things you could definitely not live without?

Music, friendship and strawberries!

Finally, what are your aims for the rest of 2007 and beyond?

I want to get lots of production done and really get myself skilled on the engineering front. I also want to get some my tracks released and get my own label up and running. Most important of all, I want to have fun in the process!

THE RESIDENTS

Warning can proudly announce our first two residents and our choice couldn’t have been better. They both are talented DJ’s and both had huge recognition last time playing for Warning so with no hesitation we made them residents. These guys have a true passion for playing music as well as making it. So who are they? They are both from Welling, Kent?

The winners are:

PAUL BATTEN
BROW

Paul Batten has certainly got around in the past couple of years, playing in Ibiza, playing at Snat, INSEKT and a resident at Twist. Paul has played at all the past Warning’s and would certainly be playing at the future one’s so it was fitting for him to make another residency. So expect at each Warning, Paul to play the best up front music and play a different music genre each time. This coming Warning Paul is playing a classic Hard House set. Don’t expect this classic set to consist of the usual Tony De Vit, Paul Glazby and Farley stuff. Paul is going to be covering 1998 to 2002 era; such as Knuckle headz, Up front, Circular Saw, Black magic, Technology, Chemical Imbalance etc. His set will bring back some memories!

Brow is an extremely talented DJ with a wealth of music knowledge. (He is an encyclopaedia when it comes to music and DJ’s). Brow debuted at Warning in April and the crowd’s response was wicked. We had so many replies from clubbers saying how good his demo was and his set, we thought it would be perfect timing for Brow to join Warning as a resident. You can expect Brow to be playing the best rolling techno, and if you think techno is boring just listen to Brow’s stuff. Brow can also play funky and hard house so expect his sets to blow you away.

Guest DJ’s

Kevsey D is returning to play for Warning. Kevin last played in November and rocked the dance floor with his hard house selection. Kevin has been making his mark within the scene playing for Total Mayhem the arcade at Twist and various other parties. It is definitely time Mr Dobbins is back to play for us. Kevin will be getting the night started.

Andy Rise is a northern nutter who is unquestionably a top DJ and producer. He is a resident at Cyberkitten and clubbed up and regularly plays at Frantic events and leaves his mark each time. He often plays with Matt Pickup but we thought we should bring him down on his own from Blackpool. Warning can not wait to see Andy Rise bang out his stuff and have the dance floor moving like nutters. This is going to be a hell of a set.

Our next guest DJ is Richard Toomz and Warning can’t wait to see his set as I’m sure the clubbers are. Richard got hooked to the hard house scene when going to Sunnyside up @ Camden Palace way back. Since then Richard has played at 414 and played for INSEKT. More recently Richard is involved with Vicious and Toolbox knocking out top releases. Some of Richards’ great releases and collaborations to date are tunes such as ‘Margherita’ with Dave Owens and ‘screw loose’ on Vicious and many more in the pipeline. So with this immense DJ experience expect a conker of a set.

Jon BW is one of those DJ’s who makes unique music and plays at many events up north. He played for INSEKT back in May and absolutely smashed it and showed what he is made off. Jon has been making excellent funkier style hard house and has made awesome tunes such as ‘Get with it’ and ‘Council House.’ Warning can proudly welcome Jon to release his unique music and if you have not seen him play yet then its time you get down and check him out.

Finally we have a two hour set that will be criminal if missed. Both have played for Warning before and smashed the place up both times. This time they are joining forces to play a world exclusive 2 hour set; we welcome Tom Basquil and Steve Maynard. They both play at Twist, Tom has played at 414 and Steve at Purple Turtle and both have their fingers in the production pie. Maynard has done many collaborations and made awesome tunes such as ‘Follow the leader’ and ‘In Trouble’ with Alex Calver. Although Steve is not just the harder side of things he plays some of the best ever warm up sets. Tom is the ultimate set closer, pure filth and lets loose. He has made quite a whirl around the Hard House scene over the past year and has played at INSEKT recently. Tom has made tunes such as his new one ‘Penny drop’ and ‘distorted reality’ ‘hostile bitch’ and ‘rock dat shit’ with Steve Maynard and WMD. So be prepared for this duo to rock the shite out of you at Warning.

Now with the DJ’s sorted and the venue organised, the only thing left is you, the clubbers. This truly is a night not to be missed!! Amazing music and an unbelievable crowd are iconic of WARNING, décor, lazers and reasonable priced drinks you will be silly to miss out. All you need to do now is put on your raving shoes and make your way down to Sub- south on the 21st July. Tickets are £12 on the door. Alternatively see Darren, Jasmine or Ryan at the wk/ends for £10 tickets. You can also purchase tickets at www.moreonthedoor.com for £10 and get an exclusive Richard Toomz demo.

And remember Twist is our official after party to continue your Sunday morning!
