Fall in Love with Planet Love

It’s been a strange year for festivals, unless of course you like mud and plenty of it, but these days the British public are starting to get wise and do their homework. More and more people are taking advantage of cheap and quick flights to get out to established and well known parties like Sonar and Dance Valley, but there’s a festival that’s even closer to home that’s maybe not heralded enough, Planet Love. Taking place this year on the 8th of September, have you booked your tickets yet?
Now in its ninth season, this year heralds a change for the festival and a big leap forward for the organisers. Originally a Northern Irish festival, this time round the guys are going for broke and running Planet Love on both sides of the border simultaneously! What with shuttling the biggest DJs back and forth by helicopter, giving thousands of ravers in two different countries their superstar DJ fix, if they can pull this off I have no doubt it will certainly resonate in memories for years to come! But what do you know of Planet Love? If it’s more or less nothing don’t worry, come with us and find out exactly why you should be falling head over heels.
HarderFaster: What factors made you decide to put together an outdoor party in the first place nine years ago?
Eddie Wray: Ireland didn’t have an outdoor dance festival. In fact there were few of them around. We were passionate about dance music so the idea of hosting a massive one-off event, al fresco, seemed like a good idea! We have always sought to do big and new exciting things for dance music here. Our efforts opened the floodgates for all the other dance festivals held in Ireland since 1998, to take place. We were a test case!
HF: You’ve moved three times in your short history. What have you looked for in a venue?
Accessibility, Beauty, history, good drainage, seclusion and a nice council!
HF: You’ve hosted a variety of genres at Planet Love. What are your core genres, why were they chosen and how do you think they are reflected in the UK and indeed the Irish scene in general?
Trance, house, hard dance, and old skool happy hardcore are our core genres. Their popularity has developed as the festival itself has developed. We have embraced many genres over the years – breaks and Psy trance for example – always keen to give something new a go, and to give fans of minority dance genres a heads up at some point. Those big four dominate though.
HF: What do you look for when organising collaborations for the various arenas?
Local scene relevance, good headliners, likely popularity, success within the marketplace elsewhere, demand and requests from the more dedicated members of our website (www.planetlovemusic.com) and how the collaborations will contribute to the growth of the festival.
HF: You have a commitment to new acts and DJs. Just why are they so important to you?
Nublood is the lifeblood of the dance scene. They are fundamental to its continued existence and progression. Plus, it’s doubtless that we get a bit of a buzz from being the first to identify and introduce new acts and DJs to the scene here.
HF: How would you say Planet Love compares to the other big UK festivals and indeed the genre leading Dutch ones?
In terms of Planetlove’s spirit and atmosphere, we exceed all of them! Of course Ireland’s limited demographic dictates that we’re much smaller, which frustrates Eddie and I terribly, however, despite this we invest heavily into our line ups and often successfully give our provincial UK counterparts a run for their money (line up wise I mean).
HF: Your summer this year has been more or less like the rest of the UK’s. What provisions are you putting in place for your clubbers ease of access and comfort?
Big water proof tents haha! Lots of tree bark for potentially muddy grounds and flooring in some of the tents. It has often been said that we have a pact with God as weather at Planetlove is always glorious. Let’s hope the trend continues!
HF: You’re operating two festivals simultaneously on both sides of the border this year. Why did you decide to this rather than hold them on independent days?
Em, cos we’re gluttons for punishment, I think! Seriously though, it was actually a pretty logical thing to do. It meant we could share many DJs and have the line up of our life. We enjoy pushing the boundaries of expectation too so this seemed like a completely novel idea which would show the world dance scene that we’re actually pretty good – and passionate – about what we do.
HF: How much planning has gone into this and what challenges do you think you’ll face on the day?
Planning stretched over 364 days and nights. From the day after last year’s event, which was the biggest to date, we started planning this event. Challenges - logistics, weather and grumpy techno DJs and probably millions of others. It will be a definite learning curve!
HF: You’ve said there’ll be a “big emphasis on the shows themselves.” What exactly can Planet Love attendees hope to expect from the festival this year?
Eddie and I have spent a lot of time travelling to dance events all over the world to take in ideas. I think that’s where big one off events are heading nowadays – increasing the ‘show’. It’s not just about laying on a few big DJs anymore. People want to see a spectacle. We have a full choreographed visual spectacle planned for the Love arenas in both festivals.
HF: Where do you take your influences from when producing the festival?
We went to Sensation White most recently. Unbelievable! It is the best one off dance event in the world, without a doubt.
HF: Wrapping up, just why will someone have a good time at Planet Love?
Cos the locals are a friendly bunch making the atmospheres (sic) electrical, cos we have a FABULOUS array of DJs on board, because the beer will be nice and cold and the show in the Love arena will be something else!
