Kutski cooks up the next generation of hardcore

Reported by Billy Daniel Bunter / Submitted 24-09-07 21:39

Showcased through his unique DJ style and full versatility, Kutski refuses to be pigeon holed. A born entertainer with almost excessive amounts of talent; how many DJ’s can scratch, mix with 3 decks, juggle beats, use samples and combine various genres within a set like this young talent? How many DJs are accepted and loved within 3 different dance music scenes, from mecca’s such as Gatecrasher, Scottish super club Inside Out and Slinky to hard dance super brands Goodgreef, Tidy, Frantic, Storm and Bionic while not forgetting hardcore legends Slamming Vinyl and Tasty?

Not many, we can tell you. So if you’ve yet to find out about the Radio 1 super kid then take our hand and come with us as we catch up with him to get the low down on his forthcoming album, Helter Skelter – Hardcore 2007 – The New Generation, where he works along side Billy Daniel Bunter and Slipmatt.

Hello Kutski, how are you today?

I'm very well, thank you! And you're good self?

Yes I'm fine thanks! OK, now the pleasantries are out of the way let’s get straight in! You have mixed one of the CD's on the new Helter Skelter album, how did this come about?

Obviously myself and Bunter go back a long way now and we have worked together on a lot of different projects. Bunter has been working on the Helter Skelter series for the past few years and decided now was the time to bring some new blood in to add a new dimension to the series. For some reason he decided to get some chump from 'opp norf' involved, haha.

The previous CDs included the hardcore and rave breaks styles, do you bring anything new to the party?

Indeed I do! The first CD is rave breaks which has proved to be massively popular and the third CD is full on happy hardcore. My mix is quite insane actually! It starts off with hard techy stuff, then a bit of hard trance, hard dance, hardstyle, a touch of freeform, some weird and wonderful breakbeat stuff we've been working on, drum n bass, some stuff on an oldskool vibe, through to full on underground hardcore at the end! It had always been my ambition to put out a mix that incorporated so many styles and filled in all the cracks between all the sub genre's of rave music.

Other than your involvement in the Bonkers 16 project, is this your first full album?

Yeah it is! I have had a lot of offers over the past year or so, but I felt strongly about having complete creative control! I didn't want to have to mix someone’s back catalogue, I wanted to make a musical statement and push things forward, open people’s ears.

With this mix, not only did I have complete creative control, I had the opportunity to get tracks written and remixed to spec, specifically for the project which is insane! I really think the time, thought, and effort put into this mix is reflected when you listen to it and I think it’s the perfect representation of what I’m about which was so important to me for my debut mix album!

What is your favourite track from the mix?

There is so much amazing, fresh music on there, its hard to say, but one track that stood out for me from the start of the project was Darwin's mix of CLSM - Release Me. The track is so non-formulated, it’s almost like oldskool jungle meets punk! The production is pristine, there’s live session guitars and Niki Mak's vocals are to die for! I could listen to this track on loop all day and not get board of it!

"Nelson Says Watch Out"... explain?!”

Me and Jon Doe where working in the studio on a hard techy track. The bassline was so strong it really didn't need a vocal. Whilst working on the track a little late and a little loud, Jon’s neighbour, Nelson Mandela came storming in the studio hurled a load of abuse at us in African, pointed at the sceen and shouted "Watch Out!" and them left.

As luck has it, a mic was recording at the time, so we decided to dedicate the track to Mr. Mandela. The next morning he came round to apologize about his outburst, heard what we had done with the track and loved it. He brought me and Jon a glow stick each as a peace offering! True story.

Errr... OK! Moving on, how are things going at the Beeb?

Great! Radio One have just re-jigged the line up again, and decided to keep me on again, which is great news. I'm actually doing this interview at Radio One now (ohh get me!), while I'm preparing all the music and stuff for tonight show! We've got Mark EG in the studio to for a lesson in techno and Alex Kidd on the phone to drop one of his all-time classics so it should be a mental show! The show will probably have been on by the time you read this, but you can listen again at www.bbc.co.uk/radio1 and follow the link to my big ugly head!

Any new crazy project on the go?

I'm gonna take a breather I think for a week or so! The album was intense and with the radio show and a crazy gig schedule, I’ve literally not stopped for about 2 to 3 months! I just nipped out before and got that new Resident Evil for my wii, so that could be my new project actually. Oh, I am also working on a side project with one of my mates from the DnB scene. We're doing like a studio mashup of all DnB / roots / ragga and all that!! Probably not the cup of tea for everyone reading this, but it is wicked!

On an hard dance tip though, there’s loads in the pipeline over the coming months so watch this space.

Got any hot gigs coming up?

Yeah, Planet Love in Ireland will be ace, Creamfields is always amazing as it home turf for me, and the next tidy weekender I’m doing back to back with the walking ASBO that is DJ Vandall.

Reeto, thanks for your time Mr. K

Thanks for taking time out to catch up!! Brapp... brapp...
