Dance music gets all chopped up with Splittr

Reported by Greg Zizique / Submitted 19-12-07 14:37

There’s been some great collaborations over the years in dance music but with the release of All Alone a new and exciting era has dawned and who knows where it will lead. Splittr is the brainchild, the coming together, of two key artists from the house and breaks scenes. We got Greg Zizique to pen some questions for the guys and find out just how they were planning to fuse their sounds.

With plenty of tracks and many remixes under his belt already, not to mention awards such as Best International DJ at the Danish DJ Awards and nominations at the House Music Awards, Martijn ten Velden has established himself as a major player.

While his new partner, Mark Yardley, nearly needs no introduction whatsoever. As one half of one of the leading breakbeat groups, the Stanton Warriors, Mark has been personally responsible for many a dancefloor destroying track over the years and this doesn’t look like stopping yet.

In fact All Alone has been supported by many leading jocks and has featured heavily on MTV. A success story already but with these two on board nobody would have doubted that anyway.

How did the partnership come to happen? Your both from different scenes (house/ breaks), was it a chance meeting, or planned?

MY: We met each other through a mutual friend who we had both produced tracks with and had knowledge of each others work anyway.

MTV: We had been planning for a while to do a track together. When we finally got together it went so well we decided to do some more.

What do you hope to achieve from releasing this collaboration?

MY: World peace and an end to poverty and to make people dance.

MTV: I am more concerned about the creative process and enjoying making the music, but obviously I hope it will do well.

Who inspires you from the breaks scene Martijn? And Mark who inspires you from the house scene?

MY: I’ve got a lot of respect for Trentemoller and some of the Ed Banger stable, as for up and comers Alex Metric is making some great records.

MTV: The Stanton Warriors of course, who else?

Which other dance music producers do you rate? Is there enough new talent coming through?

MY: Sirius Mo from Germany is a great new talent coming through and then there’s the Bassbin Twins. There's plenty of talent out there, it's about finding enough time to listen to them all.

MTV I really rate Ali ‘Dubfire’, I also love Booka Shade, Bodzin, Mike Gray, Pryda. There’s always plenty of new talent coming through, this year it was Deadmau5, D Dub, Patric la Funk, Chris Barratt etc etc.

You've been making music between you for a number of years. Which of your tracks are you most proud of? Are there any that make you cringe?

MY: I'm usually most proud of the most recent stuff I've done as I’ve got a short attention span, so it's all stuff that no one's heard yet, but I'm very proud of the body of work that Stanton Warriors has produced and a lot of acoustic stuff that I've recorded solo.

MTV I’m usually not proud of my stuff at all, just happy it’s finished. As for cringing, there are one or two remixes in the past!

What are some of your favourite tracks from 2007, both electronic and non-electronic?

MY: One of my favourite albums from early this year was Sound of Silver- LCD Soundsystem with the brilliant Someone Great. Chem's Saturate off their new album We Are The Night was also on extreme ipod rotation for the latter part of the year.

MTV: Radiohead - In Rainbows

Can either of you play a real instrument? If so, does this have an impact on your productions?

MY: We both play various different instruments and I personally like the organic edge that having live instruments over electronic instruments gives. It helps a lot in the writing process as well, when you need to concentrate on the raw elements of a song rather than a production.

Mark, you provided the vocals to the track. Is this something of a hidden talent that we are going to see more of?

MY: I used to sing in a lot of bands when I was younger and then I started spending more time on the production side when I got into electronic music, so I stopped recording my voice. Obviously I never stopped singing, so I'm enjoying getting back in front of a mic again with Splittr.

When DJing or performing live do you have a preference – playing to big festival crowds or in a more intimate club setting?

MTV: I don’t have a preference, it’s just different. At a festival you have to bang out the big tunes and it’s usually quite short and intense. In a small club you are much more in contact with the crowd and you can play a more personal and usually much longer set.
Is there anything you think that needs to change in the current dance scene? In your opinion where do you think it’s at (good or bad)?

MY: No. No one should concern themselves on where the dance scene should be going. There will always be fresh stuff out there coming from places you least expect it, there will always be people who will copy it, some new scenes will spring up out of the ashes of others.

It's the best thing about it, it's constantly in flux.

If you could work with any musician, alive or dead, who would it be?

MY: Prince

MTV: Stevie Wonder

What productions are you working on at the moment?

MTV: Some new Splittr and some new solo tracks with no titles yet!

What do you do in your spare time, or is dance music your life?

MY: It's hard to find time for much else, but for a night off there nothing quite like cooking some great food and I've found a good poker game local to me, so I have been fleecing the regulars at that!

MTV: Sleep

What’s your favourite film?

MY: Currently: Rounders (best poker film ever)

MTV: La Boheme

Do you have any pets?

MY: Apart from a mouse living under the floorboards (and occasionally over) in my living room...no.

MTV: I have the occasional pigeon flying into my kitchen window, but that’s about it.

Splittr: All Alone is available now.
