Tom Real gets Thirsty!

With some amazing parties already under the belt and more than a few still upcoming, international star Tom Real is busting out some grooves all over the world from coconut plantations to desert wastes, all via your favourite Thursday night hang out – Thirst in Soho! Ahead of his star turn on the decks at Thirsty Thursdays we grilled him about his current sound and productions, those amazing parties and The Disco Of Doom!
You’re well known for your electro and breaks sound. What got you into these genres in the first place?
I used to be heavily into drum 'n' bass and then one night realised that all the people into drum and bass and going to the parties where moody little rude boys who were out to get into mischief / fights etc. and I realised I didn’t want to be spending any time around these people. At the time I was resident DJ for a D’n’B party run by Exeter-based Future Underground Nation, their other party ‘Beatz & Bobz’ was all about breaks, big beat and techno. I needed a change of scene and at the time Beatz & Bobz were bringing people like Adam Freeland, Renie Pilgrem and Tayo down to the club and I was inspired by the sound of ‘Nu Skool’ Breaks and the variety of music you could mix with it because of its tempo. A couple of DJs at that time really inspired me - Dr. Alex Patterson from The Orb and Jody Wisternoff from Way Out West. Both came down, properly mashed up different styles and rocked the party and from that day my style was born!
You’ve also been pumping out some classy hits via some collaborations. What’s your sound of choice at the moment and how are you creating it?
With the The Rogue Element we’re in the process of launching our new production project called ‘Disco Of Doom’, more info below but our first EP is out on Passenger Records in September. Elsewhere I’m writing more progressive and tech house sound with Fake Hero as I have fallen in love with this sound from my trips to massive outdoor raves like Universo Paralello in Brazil. I really like the ‘outdoorsey’ feel to this music and have decided to start a side project writing this music with a view to getting more international DJ work and well, playing at some cracking raves.
Alongside the Black Russian we’ve remixed a track by a chap called Elite Force which is coming out as part of his tenth anniversary album later this year, it’s a bass-heavy techno roller, it’s getting some great responses in my sets, so it’s looking good! I’ve recently collaborated with a really inspiring guy called Gaudi on a track which hopefully will make it onto his next album, it’s still early days there and we’re working on nailing the track, I’m also working with Hamish from Alchemy Records, I met him in Brazil this year and he lives just down the road from me and we’re both loving ‘tropical techno’ so am in the process of seeing what comes out of the studio there!
Disco Of Doom, what’s it all about, should we be quaking in our boots at your evil sounds?
Definitely! The Disco Of Doom is an extension of a monthly on demand radio show we’ve been doing for Samurai FM which is based around music that’s really inspiring and exciting us. The idea being both of us were getting really bored of the sound of break beat last year, which we have quite a reputation for but at the time (and still are) we were both listening to lots of new music from people like Justice, Mr Oizo, Thomas Schumacher, Oliver Huntemann, Soulwax, Herve & Sinden which was the music that we was inspiring us in the studio and in our DJ sets and we decided to make this our new project title. This also coincided with us working more closely and also DJ’ing together more so we decided to take the idea further and use it as a production / DJ name. All work we do together will be under this title enabling us to develop our sound together but keep our own projects separate.
When are you going to ditch the training wheels and get your own stuff out there?
2008 is the year I’m finally nailing my own production! Having been in studios with other producers and engineers for years I really felt this year I need to make my own mark. Collaborating with people is a great deal of fun and one of the best ways to learn production but the result is always going to be a mixture of both your sounds and ideas. I’m still not decided on the sound, I’m just writing what I enjoy at present and learning as much as I can from other people to enable me to live my dream 
You run Cypher PR. How and why did you first get into the promotional game?
Completely by accident... Seven years later and I’m still here lol! I am now part-time though, I’ve handed the managerial reigns over to my colleague and long term friend Rupert, I still work on the projects I enjoy like South West Four Festival and am currently helping to develop new business and oversee the office, it’s amazing to have a company who believe in what you are doing and allow you the freedom and opportunity to pursue your goals.
You work very closely with Lock’N’Load Events, promoting the South West Four festival every year. What is it about this relationship that’s important to you?
I love clubs and events and getting to work on London’s biggest and best outdoor dance event is a dream come true. I’ve known Damian (Gelle) since his early Heat days when under the old ‘Ignition Crew’ name I used to DJ for him. We met again a few years back at Brixton Academy, I think it was a Faithless concert and we were chatting and he found out I work in PR with some of the biggest names in music and next thing he invited me to work on South West Four and four years later we still enjoy a great working relationship. Damian’s a really inspiring guy, he’s got such big ideas and goals and the skill and ability to deliver them so it’s an absolute pleasure working alongside him.
Who are you looking forward to seeing at this year’s event and why?
This year I am looking forward to hearing Sven Vath, Paolo Mojo and Claude Von Stroke. I’ve never seen Sven play and he’s obviously become such a figurehead of techno over the last couple of years, so it’s great he’s playing. Paolo has been releasing some amazing music lately and is a real talent to watch out for and Claude Von Stroke, well I guess I’m keen to hear what all the hype is about there!
Playing on a coconut plantation earlier on in the year must have been cool, tell us more about that and what other crazy parties and gigs you have planned?
The coconut plantation is Universo Paralello, which takes place in Bahia region of Brazil every new year. It was one of the Glade Festival crew who first told me about it and said it was the craziest party on earth... so I was keen to check it out (especially as it came from them!) I went for the first time 2005/6 and was blown away by the experience, Brazil is a pretty amazing country in itself but image a festival located in absolute paradise, a coconut farm located on a beach with dense rainforest on one side and the turquoise expanse of the Atlantic Ocean on the other with not a spec of life outside of the rave for as far as the eye could see, oh and it goes on for seven whole days!
I went back last year (2007/8) and lost my heart on the beach so am heading back their this year without a shadow of a doubt! Also on the cards this summer are gigs at perhaps one of the craziest beach parties on earth, the KaZantip festival, which takes place on the shores of the Black Sean in the Ukraine. It goes on for 5 weeks and they get something like 100,000 party people down there... Sounds sick hey! Am back for a week then off to Portugal for the Boom festival which is another great party, I’m really looking forward to that, then back for a week, see South West Four off and then am off to Burning Man festival in the Nevada Desert. As far as festivals and summer’s come, I really don’t think it gets any better than going to and playing at three of the maddest parties on the planet!
What can the UK scene learn from the scene you see when you’re playing internationally?
I think the UK lacks attention to décor, you visit some countries or parties and décor is really high on their list of priorities whilst in the UK it never seems to factor that highly. I think the UK still enjoys the best line ups (overall) but unfortunately lacks in weather and laws / licensing restrictions. In Europe or beyond you can get away with 150K sounds system blasting 24hours, 7 days a week but in the UK, it’s turned right down like your listening to someone else’s Ipod on the tube. It’s really sad. That said, I’d rather listen to music at low volume outdoors than not at all!
You’re the star guest for the next Thirsty Thursdays. What can we expect you to drop on the dance floor?
Expect the finest wonky techno and electro! Really looking forward to it so see y’all there!

Our final guest is none other than international DJ runner up in the HF awards, Zoology resident Matt Dahl!! Fresh from gigs in Ibiza, Finland, Brixton and beyond (as well as making small talk with some of the world’s biggest DJs), Matt closes this months TT with a remit to make sure he rocks it.
