Get About Town with Kevsey D

Kevsey is HDS promoter Elvis’s partner in crime. He’s a cheeky chappy who’s been playing around South London for a long time, and has been a regular for Frantic over the last year or so. You’d recognise him if you saw him, as he turns up everywhere! After a recent stint in Ibiza and with lots of exciting things coming up over the next few months, including HDS on 15th August, I grabbed 5 minutes with him to find out more.
Hiya Kevsey, I have to say you’re looking very brown! How was your time in Ibiza? Were you playing over there?
Hi Sue! Well what can I say about Ibiza, it was truly out of this world and easily the best experience in my life, it was my first time over there and it will definitely not be my last. I met some amazing people over there and the friendships I had before are even stronger now. I was lucky enough to have been booked for three sets on the sensational White Isle.
Firstly I played at a pool party, then the next day I played on the hard dance boat party - one of my favourite days out there; sun, smiles, dancing, champagne, diving and a gorgeous sunset with Cafe Del Mar playing in the background! Then on Tuesday the set I was looking forward to the most, main room for Tidy at Eden! I warmed up for Alex Ellenger and the crowd was amazing. It was a dream come true to play in a club of such status.
Two nights that you work closely with were over there weren’t they – Frantic and Nightshift. What’s your involvement with them both and how did you become part of their teams?
I have been a part of Frantic and Nightshift (now Glow Ball) for roughly a year now and it is a pleasure to say I am a DJ for both promotions. My main involvement is DJing but I also help out with the promoting side of things too. Elvis saw something in me after playing at HDS and after he spent the Tidy Weekender with me and Steve O'Brady he asked me if I would get more involved with HDS. I am honoured to be a part of such a great event and it has also helped me make more of a name for myself on the scene.
About a year ago now, I was up at the Telegraph when Aaron James and Tony Kaos came up to me and said “Kev we have been listening to your demo all night and we totally loved it” - they got me a midnight set at the second Nightshift event and after that I got to know the promoters Matt and Kris a bit more They were happy to have me as part of their team.
You’ve had a really busy few months – tell us more.
A total rollercoaster ride! I have had some real low points lately but everything that has happened for me as a DJ has kept me going and made me enjoy everyday day that goes by. I played a tribute set for good friend Steve O'Brady (R.I.P) at AWsum, it truly was unreal and the hardest thing I have ever been asked to do, but I am glad to have stepped into his shoes and I couldn't have asked for a better crowd! Straight after the set I was interviewed by the lovely Cally Gage which you will be able to watch on the web soon.
The day I got back from Ibiza I had to get a coach up to Leeds to play another tribute set for Steve at Slinky but this time I was joined by Steve's good friend Cooki and we had a right laugh behind the decks - just how Steve would of wanted it!
Over the past two months I have also played sets at Tidy vs Nu-Religion, Twist, HDS and WREcreation and loved every one of them.
As part of the HDS team you’re working on the August event at the moment – get us excited with a few juicy details please!
Well there's not too much I can say that you don't know already! I can't wait to see Pickup vs Rise vs Elvis! After seeing Pickup and Rise play at Puzzle Project I can promise everyone that they are in for a treat at this HDS, especially as they are joined by Elvis who will add his amazing unique sound and give this set a cheeky element all round.
I also suggest that you don't miss out on what Dean R has in store for all of us, with a great track Street Knowledge released on Toolbox alongside the many other top tunes he is producing at the moment, he is carving out his own distinctive sound which I’m really loving.
You seem to have your fingers in quite a few pies, how do you find time to do everything – DJ, produce, promote?
Well it's something that I love doing and I will always find the time to do it, as most other DJs know, most spare time gets spent either sitting at the computer, mixing on the decks or just filling life with a total passion for music! I wouldn't have it any other way.
Speaking of production, you’ve been getting more into that recently haven’t you? How’s it going?
Yeah I have and I am really happy how things are going with it. I have a handful of tunes under my belt now, one of which is to be released within the next few weeks on Toolbox Choons, The Empire – Kevsey D & Dean R. Also Trevor Dans, Dean R and myself have started up our own digital label called Inertia. We have got backing from some top DJs and producers and some great tracks as our first releases in a couple of months.
I’ve seen you play a bounce set, a filth set, and somewhere in between. What’s your preferred style and how did you discover what you wanted to play?
Last year I played a lot in the arcade at Twist; I played hard house classic sets, trance sets and even the odd hardcore set but it was the DJs in the main room that really gave me inspiration; the likes of Paul Batten, Tom Basquil and Karim. I love filthy hard house but also love uplifting tunes too, especially tracks with great piano riffs in them. The style that I have carved for myself is the lighter side of filth, cool driving filth tunes but with a hint of an uplifting element too. If it's an earlier set then I'd more than likely play a bit lighter.
Apart from HDS, what gigs have you got lined up over the next few months?
I'm doing a back to back with Nicky D at Frantic's 11th birthday which I’m really looking forward to, it’s my first time playing at Koko too so I can't wait for it. The week after I'm heading up to Leeds to play for Vi4gra, this will be my 3rd set outside of London, which I'm really pleased about. Then in September I’m playing at the Glow Ball Tony De Vit Memorial event.
I have a few more sets planned for outside of London in the coming months but I'm just waiting for them to be confirmed, I'll keep you all posted.
HDS is billed as “Birthday Celebrations” as Will Frantic, Chloe Frantic, Elvis, and Pickup & Rise all get that little bit older in August. If you could buy them 1 present each what would you get them all?
I would get them all a piece of rock that says Kevsey D on it (and that's not copying Cally Gage - I thought of the idea first but she secretly stole it from me), hehe!!
How would you entice people to come to HDS (the use of money or promise of sexual favours is not allowed!)?
'Promise of sexual favours is not allowed' now that's just unfair! If you're after an event with great talent from some of the top DJs in the business to some of the best fresh, new up & coming DJs playing a range of music where there is something for everyone then Frantic's HDS is the place for you to be. A great atmosphere and an all round brilliant night.
What words of encouragement would you give to up & coming DJs now that you’re career is going from strength to strength?
The first thing I would say is practice as much as you can and get really comfortable behind the decks; every club that you play in will have slightly different sound systems and the more comfortable you are the more relaxed you will be. Don't worry too much if you mess up, it happens to everyone!
Get yourself out and about to different events as much as you can, don't just send your demo to a promoter and expect a set out of it, it's always a lot better to go to their events, meet them in person and get to know them.
Lastly! Make sure you have a great time behind the decks, if you're having a good time then it will brush off on everyone in the room with you too.
Now for some fun stuff:
Most overused word?
Fair play!!
Most underrated animal?
A turtle: they look stupid but there's more to them than meets the eye.
If you could be a crayon, what colour would you be?
A yellow crayon, I always wear a lot of yellow in the summer so it's gotta be that colour really.
Favourite day of the year?
Pay day!
Best supermarket?
Marks & Spencer’s, they make the best ploughman sandwiches around.
Thanks Kevsey, I’m looking forward to seeing you at HDS and Frantic’s 11th Birthday.

Friday 13th June saw Nightshift on hosting duties for the 2nd room at HDS, and what a night it was – who said Friday 13th was cursed? The Ibiza Warm Up was more sizzling than lukewarm, with Kevin Energy, Audio Hedz and Andy Rise all bringing their own brands of hard dance to Hidden. Each room was stomping all night, and the competition winners Wayne Smart and Jef did themselves proud.
Don’t forget if you want the chance to play at October’s HDS, simply add yourself to the guestlist, drop off a demo CD on the night at the front desk and who knows, it could be you!
Well now that we’ve just about recovered it’s time to start thinking about the next instalment in the uber-fun HDS.
Will “Mr Frantic Himself” Paterson, Chloe “Queen of Frantic” Leeks and Elvis “HDS” Presley, er sorry, Garland all celebrate birthdays in August. Also getting another year older will be b2b duo Pickup & Rise. With all these birthdays in mind we thought we’d do something a bit special – so look out for free CDs from Elvis & Jimbean to the first 50 clubbers, as well as free Champagne! This event is not to be confused with HDS’s own birthday, happening in October – keep an eye out for more details in due course!
As if that wasn’t enough, the birthday DJs will be having a 3 way in the main room (someone bring the baby oil!) – Pickup vs Rise vs Elvis is not to be missed! This theme is continued throughout the HDS room with a lovely birthday present in the form of a girly 3 way! Kinky!
The lovely guys from www.moreonthedoor.com will be taking over the Purple Room, bringing talent from Twist and Summit in the shape of Tom Basquil and Jason Blayde. Fresh from his success at June’s HDS Jimbean will be returning to play a b2b with Contagious’s Wain Johnstone.
And as if that wasn’t enough, HDS’s very own Kevsey D will be back from Ibiza & ready to rock the Nu Generation Room alongside special guest James Condon!
So bring us a birthday cake and don’t forget your party hats. Be prepared for wrestling in jelly & ice cream and a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday. We’ll supply the goody bags and the stomping music. And we’ll see you there!
Happy bloody Birthday indeed!
