becomeone with Shaun Rowland for Dom Pardey!

With his ‘Proper Trance’ and sharp mind, Dom Pardey has over the years been an inspiration to many. Since his stroke he has continued to show us his dedication and strength in conviction throughout his rehabilitation and continues to inspire. Following an amazingly successful party back in February, scene favourite becomeone have returned for another event to benefit the Dom Pardey Trust and aid his continued road to recovery. Ahead of the party HarderFaster talked with resident and promoter, Shaun Rowland to find out more about Dom, Egos and Down Under.
Shaun Rowland
becomeone is back again to show their support for Dom Pardey following his stroke. Why is it so important to you to help him in this way?
Well the main reason is because he is a very close friend to Simon and I. He's had a really tough time of it over the past few years and if we can help aid his (long) recovery process then we're keen to try! He's also played some legendary sets for us over the years and so putting on this party feels like the right way to go about raising this much needed money.
Having a stroke is a very serious and life changing moment. It must be a challenge every day for Dom. What has the trust helped with so far to aid his recovery?
The trust has been invaluable in raising money to provide some absolutely essential tools that enable Dom to live as independently as possible. His powered wheelchair has undoubtedly helped him the most out of anything bought thus far with other rehabilitation devices such as a saeboflex left arm splint which is designed to improve his movement and a van that can carry Dom and his wheelchair out and about.
How else in the future and especially after this party do you think you’ll be able to help his rehabilitation?
Well, the thing that Dom suffers from the most is boredom and lethargy so it's very important for us, and all his friends, to visit him as much as we can. Dom gets strength from friends and family visits and going there and having a laugh with him definitely makes his life easier.
Dom Pardey in 2004
What key things as friends have you taken away from Dom’s stoke and how has it changed your life?
Fundamentally, it makes you realise that life shouldn't be taken for granted! It makes those small day to day problems seem so insignificant.
How can people keep up with and find out more about Dom’s rehabilitation?
They can read his blog http://survivingastroke.blogspot.com. It's a brutal, acerbic, honest but very funny account of Dom's life. When you read this you realise that he's still exactly the same person with a cutting sense of humour and a very, very sharp mind.
Will we see B1 back now as a series of events connected or not with Dom?
It's unlikely it'll come back regularly. Most clubs have a natural lifespan and becomeone's finished a while back - however, who knows? If we get enough interest in this party then we might consider another party towards the end of the year. It's been a while now since the monthly events so these parties may attract a whole new crowd eager for a more regular b1 experience!
You’re one of the original promoters and resident from B1. Like many promotions it started off as a one off party back in 2001. How do you think the actual putting on of the party has changed for you since that first event?
To be honest, not too much. Back then we had dreams of going on to bigger and bigger venues but that ambition has now dimmed and we're very happy just to put on parties in venues we can fill - the most important thing for us is the music of the night. We've always been very certain about what music we want at the event and this is the most important consideration for us still.
Miss C
You’ve been out to Australia and back since then. How did you find things out there and what prompted the return?
I absolutely loved it out there - had everything really, sunshine, amazing food, good music, a great cultural scene in Melbourne and access to some of the best sporting events in the world. The main problem with it was the distance from Europe but sometimes with all the trouble that happens in the world the distance doesn't seem that bad a thing. However, I got a job offer in the UK I couldn't turn down so have been back here for a year - been enjoying it and will do so for another year or so but ultimately Australia is where I want to settle.
For this party you have another original resident in the form of Miss C. How has she been doing and what can we expect from her on the night?
She's been very busy working and buying a house! We're really pleased she's playing for us as it's been a long time since we've heard her. Hard to imagine that 5 years ago she was playing the final hard dance set at each becomeone!
Tell us a little about the other DJs you have on the night and what they will bring to the party?
Headlining we have Anil Chawla who we are really excited about seeing. Anil has had an amazing year with his residency at Together and gigs just about everywhere from Ibiza to Guatemala. He's now a bone fide house music star and we're really pleased he's found time out of his schedule to play for us.
We chose DJs And Their Egos based on their performance in Ibiza this year which I was lucky enough to be at. What they bring to the party is a raw, unrestrained party atmosphere. We've always been about fun music at becomeone (you won't see a minimal DJ ever play here!) and they fit this bill perfectly.
DJs & Their Egos
Markus Buhmann has always been a favourite of ours, both as a DJ and back in the day as a punter - one of our most loyal in fact. Markus has impeccable taste and always really thinks about what music suits the promotion he plays at. He'll be kicking off the party with a real dose of class.
And finally, there's me. I'm trying to make the final set into something of my own at the moment - as Inigo is a bar rather than a club it's really important to try and inspire people after 2:30am and I hope I can do that through my sets. I'm currently taking massive inspiration from the likes of SOS, Streetlife DJs, Soulwax, Dirty South and the Swedish House Mafia and merging all these elements into the one set is what I strive to do.
Why did you choose Indigo for this and the last event?
Because we have a good relationship with the promoter there and it just feels right for a becomeone space. We've never been about big anonymous rooms, becomeone is all about having fun in close proximity with your mates and Inigo allows for this. It also has a great soundsystem and DJ set up which helps!
What are you most looking forward to for this party?
Hearing Miss C and Markus play again for the first time in 3 years, seeing DJs And Their Egos create mayhem at 1am and watching a world class DJ, Anil Chawla, in action. Also seeing people who used to come down to becomeone strut their stuff again. And of course, making loads of money for Dom - that's the real point of this and if we do that then we've achieved the goal of the party!

The roaring success of our party back in February meant that you lot raised a whopping £2,000 for the Dom Pardey Trust. This money has been put to good use by the trust and Dom has more tools at his disposal than before to aid his recovery. However, more is still needed and so we're doing it all again in August!!
We're back at Inigo in Clapham for a night of sublime house, progressive and electro brought to you by a mixture of original becomeone residents and some guest appearances from London's finest.
We kick off at 8pm and go right through till 4am and all proceeds on the door will be donated to the Dom Pardey Trust. If you can't make it along but would like to contribute anyway then please visit http://www.dompardeytrust.org.uk/
Otherwise we'll see you there for the party of the summer!
