The Rave In The Caves: Reviewed

Despite the fact the rave scene was born in a field, today unique venues are few and far between. Club events seem to happen in the same venues week in and week out and people often find themselves hanging out in the same areas night after night. Of course there are some like promoters Titanium Events who are doing things differently. HarderFaster sent reporter Claire99 to find out how differently at The Rave In The Caves.
When I first saw the poster for The Rave In The Caves, I must say I was intrigued and very pleased as it was just on my doorstep in Sunny Kent. It was going to be unique as ghost tours are typically held at this scary venue, the idea of a rave being held there was kind of cool.
Fort Amherst was built in 1756 to protect the naval dockyard from attack, it consists of underground chambers and tunnels, one of the most complete Georgian/Napoleonic fortresses in England. These were extended between 1802 and 1811, when convicts were used to create barracks, gun batteries and guardrooms but on Sat the 2nd of August a new history was formed, the caves were transformed into a music arena with awesome sound and lighting and I was there to be part of it.
Arriving at 9pm we found there was already a crowd waiting to get in, with many of the queuing people having travelled from afar and to my surprise the event was a complete sell out! As we queued guys were asking if I could sneak them in as they were desperate for tickets, but no can do, as they say – “Your name’s not down, your not coming in!” Inside, the caves provided a stunning backdrop for this first time event in Chatham, Kent. Outside, another arena boasted a grassy area where all the clubbers could chill out whilst listening to nu rave and so we sat outside for a while and mingled. There was such a friendly buzzy atmosphere out there and that in itself will entice me to go again. After talking to a few clubbers I learnt some had even travelled from London for this unique event which was very cool.
We decided to check out the rest of the venue which consisted of two caves providing cutting edge sounds from house, techno and electro. To get to these caves you went through the winding tunnels which I have to admit was awesome and unique. As we walked up the slopes to find the rooms I could hear the buzz off the crowd and it was made me speed up my pace, anxious to see what was happening and be in it. What an amazing vibe, girls were dressed up as cave girls and there was even a scatter of UV cyberwear to catch your eye.
The Babyshake Cave was our first stop and it wasn’t busy right away but people started filtering in quite quickly, by the end of Paul Di Cassa’s set there was a good crowd gathered around him showing off their moves. Paul played a wicked set and seemed to be in his element behind the decks. Next stop was the Mode Cave, this area was pretty much rammed and we squeezed through to the front to watch the DJ spinning off some tunes. Even though it wasn’t my typical taste in music the atmosphere kept me glued to the dancefloor for a few hours. As I danced I looked all around, there was a real mixture of trendy and funky people sporting caps, sunglasses and funky attire. Everybody was more than happy to pose for a photos, this made my job so much easier.
One DJ I do have to mention as he really impressed me is Sam Ball. He upped the tempo and the crowd went crazy for him, his mixing was spot on and I thoroughly enjoyed watching him work the room. I really got into his set, everybody had their hands in the air and there were constant cheers of approval throughout. By the end of his set Sam had the entire room begging for the next tune, while all around us the lasers looked brilliant with its different colours bouncing off the caves interior walls and then onto the smiling dancefloor.
A great atmosphere infused the club all night, coming from the great crowd and friendly staff, even though there were a few teething problems as you might expect with any first time event! But in all fairness it was beyond the control of the promoter. Unfortunately due to the council not being happy the outdoor arena had to stop early and then the event closed earlier than advertised. But still everybody was still smiling and in good spirits when I left. I had a brilliant night, met some great people.
I can’t wait for the next one which will hopefully be in November, so watch this space!
