Bring out the Dread

The word pioneer is often overused in the music scene but when you’re talking about the legendary Dreadzone there doesn't really seem to be a more suitable word. In 1992 Tim Bran and Greg Roberts decided to start a new music project fusing the sounds of the emerging house and techno scene and creating something new and unique and as a result Dreadzone were born.
After creating demos they had a stroke of luck when a friend got Alan Mcgee the head of Creation records to listen to their demo. He wanted to sign them instantly and Dreadzone entered the studio to start work on their first album 360°. The live side of Dreadzone also kick started around the same time and Dreadzone have been lucky enough to play at pretty much every respectable music event going including Glastonbury, where they have played on almost every stage over the years, Reading and even supporting Oasis at their massive gig at Knebworth!
Over the years the band members have changed due to numerous reasons but the core sound has alway remained the same, now almost 20 years on and five albums later the Dreadz are still going strong with a new album just about to be released and the imminent launch of the live music bonanza We Are Live at the Scala on the 27th of March where they top the bill! No doubt you’ll want to know more about the headline act and legends of the music scene, so we dragged Greg away from the studio for five minutes to see just what is going on in the world of the Dreadz!
Hi and how are you?
Tired from studio sessions but happy as I am about to go DJ in Switzerland for two days with my best mate MC Spee.
What have you been up to lately?
I have been mostly recording programming and arranging our new album in deepest Victoria.
Trying to explain the Dreadzone sound to friends is one of the hardest things I have had to explain. If you had to sum up Dreadzone in one paragraph what would it be?
Dub bass, dance beats, electronic hooks ,rock attitude and sweet melody all mixed with live energy.
You come a long way since the early days of 360 Degrees. How do you think Dreadzone has changed and evolved as a band?
We have evolved from a linear instrumental dub based dance act to a more song based outfit with a thrilling edge.
After 17 years of making music it must be hard to single out one particular triumph so what would your top 5 achievements be?
Our albums, live performances on some of the biggest stages, Little Britain and the fact that we are still going! That’s only four...er ..being on Richard and Judy?
Which album have you been most proud of?
Second Light.
What can we expect from the forthcoming album?
A more cohesive set of songs with live energy and an abundance of melody across a wide range of styles.
A lot of bands hate playing their big songs as they get tired of playing them, do you ever get bored of playing or hearing Little Britain?
No not at all. We are very proud of the tune. *puts it on*
Who would you regard as your biggest influences?
Mick Jones, The Who, The Orb, Stanley Kubrick and marijuana.
Geeky stuff time! What is your studio setup?
Logic 8 on Mac , that’s it part from a desk and instruments.
Over the years how has technology changed the way you create music?
It has always been constant for capturing the idea, the only way its changed for me is it’s quicker although I tend to take too long on stuff anyway!
How do you see music evolving over the next 20 years?
Haven’t the slightest clue.
If your sound were an alcoholic beverage, what would it be?
Guinness or a nice glass of Rioja red wine.
What’s your favourite word?
Lesbian.. or maybe dread.
We Are Live is all about live music, what instrument would you love to be able to play that you can’t already?
Piano and the triangle.
What musician or artist would you most like to be sat next to on a long haul flight (dead or alive), and would you go for chicken or beef?
Pete Townshend and I’d have both.
If you had to choose an artist from the line up of We Are Live to collaborate with, who would it be?
Subsource.
Of course you’re headlining the launch of Tweak&Bleep Presents 'We are Live' at the Scala. What can we expect from you?
A blistering set full of new and older tunes.
Thanks for your time and see you on the 27th of March!

A Live Music Bonanza for Festival Lovers, Starring the finest Bands &
Electronica Heavyweights
Tweak&bleep are back in effect. After a short break to pick up the
pieces from the summers Craziness and Christmas stuffing's, we are
back in full force. After 3 years of smashing some of east London's
best venues, and featuring some of electronicas finest artists we have
a new project that is going to bring the Live element back to London
events!
We have secured The Scala as our new home. This gorgeous period
venue gives us 4 rooms to mix it up in, with some great themes and
features in each room and a multitude of musical genres to chose
from.
Our festival style programming plans to bring some of the greatest
live dance bands indoors and onto the stage at Scala with support from
electronicas heavyweight DJ's. Giving you the best of both worlds!
We have 3 awesome groups helping us out on the night, from the
south west trendy Farmfestival, Far Too Loud's new Record label:
Broken Robot, and the killer Leeds club night: Angel Breaks! They will
all be adding their vibe to the night with guest appearances, themed
rooms and their trademark sounds!
Wonder the corridors and various rooms sampling the smorgasbord of
aural and visual delights! Catch some of the bands you love, and catch
some new ones that we are sure you will love!

From: SleeplessAndy on 20th Mar 2009 09:45.17 Totally mediocre interview IMO but one of the best live bands I've ever seen. First saw em at Glastonbury in 90something and last saw them at Scala last year. Looks like a great event...
From: dave_irvine on 23rd Mar 2009 10:38.27 Looking forward to this!
From: Daf on 23rd Mar 2009 22:31.36 Bloody love Dreadzone - the epitome of summer festivals for me.
