Meet Tobias and Nathalie, two of the freshest, brightest new talents to hit the hard-dance scene. They are a devoted couple in private and both passionate about hard-dance in public. They have individually been ripping up dance floors right across the UK and have firmly established themselves as names to watch.
Tobias and Nathalie have both been booked to play at the forth coming launch of We Love Bounce in London and ahead of their sets we managed to spend some time with them to ask a few questions.
Hi both, thanks for spending some time with us today. So how did you both get into the hard-dance scene?
Tobias: My story appeared in the cover of one of the early hard house euphoria albums! I was working as a police constable back when I was 20, in the year of 2000, when I went to Ibiza with a friend. It was there, at a small night called Sundissential at Eden, that I discovered the delights of hard house and Ms Lisa lashes (when she played bounce of course). On my return to the UK, I handed in my notice to the police force and never looked back.
Nathalie: It's all Toby's fault for me - he got me into hard dance, way back in 2001. Toby was seriously into his hard dance already when we met but I hadn’t even heard of a dance genre called “hard house” (as it was known back then!)
Until then I’d only listened to trance but only what came out on the commercial albums! I was more into my indie, rock and punk bands to be honest! Toby immediately bought me the Tidy Girls Annual (mixed by Lisa Lashes and Anne Savage) and the green Hard House Euphoria, which were his two favourite albums at the time. I listened to the CDs on repeat and fell in love with the music! Toby then took me to Sundissential’s 5th Birthday at the Sanctuary where I popped my hard house cherry and here I am, still absolutely loving it!
As clubbers what do you look for in a good night out?
Tobias: Mainly the style of music and the DJ line up. They have to be all of the style I like, which is bounce all the way, or something of an uplifting nature. Second would of course be which of my friends are be attending. The third thing that makes a good night is the venue. The bigger the better really, as there aren't that many nights that take place at big venues anymore; this will always create a sense of a big event, something special, that creates more anticipation and better memories.
Nathalie: I totally agree and of course any good night out is always followed by a fun crack-on back at a friend’s house afterwards!
Describe your interpretation of “bounce”.
Nathalie: Bounce, I would say, is a feel-good, fun, tongue-in-cheek genre of hard dance with lots of euphoric or cheeky vocals. It also has that signature bassline sound known as a “donk” and is best played fast.
Tobias: It's perfect party music that everyone can enjoy, music that should never been taken too seriously and it always creates big smiles on everyone’s faces. They should contain uplifting riffs, vocals, and gorgeous deep, bouncy basslines that are impossible to stand still to.
You’re playing at We Love Bounce in London - and have kindly done a mix that can be downloaded from www.welovebounce.com - what can we expect from the mix?
Nathalie: Well as Toby and I did a back to back mix, you’ll hear a good mix of mine and Toby’s preferred bounce styles! You’ll hear some old classic favourites from me as well as some recent bounce tracks that have been taking my fancy recently! I’ve also included some tongue-in-cheek tracks that I wouldn’t necessarily put on my personal demos but what I thought would be ideal for this fun, cheeky mix to represent the bouncy, uplifting, care-free We Love Bounce sound!
Tobias: It’s something a tiny bit different to what I have done before. It’s still got that classic Tobias sound of uplifting vocal bounce, but slightly cheekier this time around; tunes that I have not put on a CD or played out previously. A sound I think that encapsulates the ethos behind We Love Bounce perfectly: Fun, slightly silly, but most importantly, a good time had by all who listen.
What is the main difference between bounce and filth hard house?
Nathalie: The donk bassline and the fun factor! Bounce automatically makes me smile and doesn’t take itself too seriously, something which filthy hard house does. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that at all but I love bounce for what it is: feel-good, happy, fun music!
Tobias: For me bounce creates totally different emotions to filth. Bounce is uplifting, carefree and contains notes and riffs that are at the higher end of the keyboard / spectrum. Filth is usually faster, darker and harder. Now I am not a filth fan by any standards (which is pretty obvious to nearly everyone that knows me), but I do appreciate why people like it. It is very powerful and driving, and can be really good to have one hell of a stomp too. It is usually mixed slightly differently, which I also appreciate, giving way to smoother, rolling bass swaps, which flow really well.
What other genres of hard dance do you like?
Nathalie: I love most types of hard dance, hence why my usual peak-time sets tend to encapsulate most styles from euphoric, driving, vocal hard dance and bouncy basslines to tougher sounding tracks. I love my funky, groovy warm-up stuff and at the other end of the scale, love a bit of filthy hard house too hence why I decided to record my two mixes Phatt Phunker and Phatt Philth to put my favourite funky and filthy tracks onto two separate mixes, respectively.
Tobias: My second passion is hardcore. It creates very similar feelings to bounce, it shouldn't be taken too seriously and is stuffed to bursting point with lovely riffs, harmonies, and has lush vocals. It is also very fast, brilliant to dance to, and hardcore nights have an atmosphere that no other form of hard dance can touch. Gammer, Dougal and Sy are absolute legends and their productions and style of music have also had a major impact on the hard house scene and the tunes we are listening to today.
Do you listen to any other type of dance music?
Nathalie:- Aside from hard dance I also love hardcore. We often go out to events such as Hardcore Til I Die and Hardcore Heaven. I love hardcore for its fast pace, heavy driving basslines and uplifting riffs and vocals, my favourite hardcore DJ being Gammer – a genius! Other dance genres I really like are trance, tech-trance and breaks. I absolutely love Eddie Halliwell, initially from when he used to mix hard house and now because he mixes the most amazing trance and tech-trance. I can’t wait to see him at Cream in Ibiza this summer!
For breaks, I like listening to Evil Nine and Alex Metric, I first saw these guys at Carl Cox and Friends at Space in Ibiza and they totally blew me away! The basslines are unreal and it’s very reminiscent of Daft Punk who I just adore! I also like a bit of techno as long as it’s tough and driving, not too keen on the plinky-plonky minimal sound just yet!
Tobias: I have been to Ibiza a fair few times now, and when out there, they play a unique mix of techno, funk and electro, especially at We Love Space and that stuff is amazing (its not the same in the UK). I also love trance. The old stuff makes me feel like no other music can and is very powerful when done right. A lot of the music I play is trance based / inspired, with trance riffs and breakdowns. I like 80's stuff too as that was the music I grew up listening too.
You both debuted on the DJ scene in the last couple of years and have already racked up an impressive list of sets. What would be the ultimate set to play?
Nathalie: Well a few years ago I would have included playing the main room of Koko. However, I’m glad to say that I’ve already accomplished that thanks to Frantic! So I would have to say playing main room of Brixton Academy, London or the Opera House, Bournemouth - two of my favourite clubs - or a festival like Global Gathering or Creamfields! That would be unreal! Abroad, I would love to play Amnesia or Space in Ibiza, two amazing clubs that I can’t wait to get back to this summer!
Tobias: In the UK, it would have to be main room at Koko or Brixton Academy or playing a hardcore set at Opera House. Internationally I would love to play at Space or Amnesia. Those two venues are definitely in the top ten venues ever and in a completely different league. I would also kill to play at a festival like Global Gathering. I can’t even imagine what the feeling must be like when you’re up there behind the decks looking out to 10,000 people.
Outside the hard-dance world, what can we find you doing in your spare time?
Nathalie: I love going to the cinema; Toby’s a bit of a film fanatic! I also love watching the soaps, Hollyoaks, Emmerdale, Corrie and Eastenders. I also go to my Jazzercise class twice a week to try to keep fit! I also love cooking and like to try out new recipes from time to time - my specialities being a Pathia Curry and also a Jambalaya. I also love going out for yummy meals. Oh dear, I’m making myself hungry thinking about it!
Tobias: I'm pretty boring really, as I hate all forms of exercise and sport, its films and video games all the way. I am a huge film buff, going to the cinema as often as possible, usually once a week. I have been playing video games before I could speak (approx 27 years now), so am usually glued to my PS3, often to Nat's huge annoyance! Oh, and I like eating out (surprise, surprise!)
Do you have any particular tunes for us to look out for this summer?
Nathalie: Well I may as well take this opportunity to plug my new E.P., which is coming out on Andy Whitby’s AWsum label on August 10th! It features my very first track Hardhouse Musik, my collaboration with Technikal – Hoovergasm and my collaboration with AWsum’s Matt Lee – Psycho. Hoovergasm was featured on Andy’s Hard Dance Awards Euphoria mix back in February and on my new Crash the Party 2 demo along with Psycho. While Hardhouse Musik can be heard on mine and Toby’s new We Love Bounce mix.
Tobias: Definitely Nathalie's EP! Other than that, not really, because the tunes I play you don't really hear anywhere else, or are not available to buy, so its unlikely to be heard elsewhere. All I can say is listen out for what I have planned over the coming months.
What is the one track guaranteed to get you on the dance floor?
Tobias: Far too many too many mention as my Best Tune Ever consists of about 124... I would probably say M13 Do It, by Signum feat Scott Mac
Nathalie:- Oooh, I’d have to say Over 4 Me by 4 Motion - I absolutely f**king love this tune!
For those that don’t know you both, you are a (very lovely) couple – how did you meet?
Nathalie: We originally met at a townie club in Peterborough called 5th Avenue where my best friend Lisa and I went out with her brother and his mates, one of which was Toby, who I thought was rather yummy! However he was seeing someone else at the time. Then the following year in 2001, when I was home from Uni for the summer, my Nokia phone started to play up so I took it to the local repair centre, where Toby was working on the front desk. I texted my best friend’s brother who worked with him and told him how gorgeous I thought Toby was and the next thing I knew he had texted me back with Toby’s number saying Toby wanted me to call him. Toby was single again by this point and as they say the rest is history!
I'm sure you've been asked this before, will you get married? Can we expect to see any Nathalie juniors or Tobias juniors running around?
Nathalie: I bloody hope so! A wedding and children are expensive things though and to be honest, right now, we’re both happy to be able to afford luxury items like great holidays, nice clothes, big nights out, things that we’d most certainly have to cut back on if we got married and had kids. One day though, I’m sure I’ll get broody and will want children.
My parents are very keen to become grandparents already, which is a lovely thought! I know who will be the babysitters now! Haha! Toby and I bought a house together over five years ago and have two adorable pussy cats, so for now a mortgage and our furry babies are definitely enough of a commitment for the time being!
Tobias: The day will definitely come, but our lives are pretty much perfect at the moment, both in our working lives and personal lives, so there is no need to rock the boat and change anything. And children? One step at a time! It has taken us eight years and we're not even married. I'll probably do a David Jason and become a Dad at 70!
Nathalie: You'd do David Jason?
Tobias: No no... yes... no... never mind.
What’s the best thing about living with each other?
Tobias: Being with Nathalie every day and having her there when I need her. She is also my best friend and we share absolutely everything. I love the fact that we experience everything together. I hate my own company, so would probably have gone mad if I had lived on my own, so she keeps me sane. Think Nat may say the opposite though!
Nathalie: The best thing about living with Toby is I get to see him everyday! I love going to bed and waking up with him by my side day in, day out and when he’s not there I miss him loads. Toby is amazingly caring and generous and makes me laugh so much! He never lets us go without and whilst I tend to do the majority of the cooking, washing and cleaning (though he is a dab-hand with a feather-duster!), Toby likes to buy the finishing technical touches such as our massive 50 inch Plasma TV and our CDJ 1000s etc so it works out quite nicely!
If Bounce were a type of fruit, what would it be?
Tobias: Pineapple. Sweet, fun, refreshing and you either love it or hate.
Nathalie:- Oooh that’s a tricky one! I’m going to go with the Australian fruit Conkerberry which I’ll now rename Donkerberry!
Any words of wisdom you’d like to share with us?
Tobias: Its better to have too many and not need them, than not have enough and need them.
Nathalie:- If you know what’s good for you, you’ll get your arses down to Hidden on the 24th July for We Love Bounce – Guaranteed to start your weekend with a whole lot of fun and smile!

House of Donk proudly presents “We Love Bounce” – Friday 24th July
2009 at Hidden, 100 Tinworth Street, London SE11 5EQ. Doors 9.30pm.
Even before the official press release was distributed the buzz and excitement surrounding this new event has been phenomenal. And for good reason; for the first time London gets its very own regular bounce night and for the launch party those lovely fellas at House of Donk have lined up some of the UKs most respected and best loved names on the bounce scene to perform at the award winning Hidden nightclub.
Headlining the launch is Strange Dave, the powerhouse behind the mighty Bounce 2 This (B2T) brand in the Midlands, Wsum’s very own Klubfiller and a special showcase set from 3Phase Records head honchos James Ellis and Tom Berry. House of Donk’s own Wain Johnstone (the man that brought us the infamous Donktagious CD), Nathalie (the stunning blond riding high in the download charts), and Tobias (who, frankly, was born to bounce) join the headliners and we are very pleased to have secured the bounce-meister talents of one-other than Pearce M, and the super-addictive Charlie Bosh will be making an appearance too. This is an incredible line-up for any launch party.
The Red Room at air-conditioned Hidden nightclub will be the setting for the launch; with an award winning sound system, centralised DJ deck (meaning a the crowd surround the DJ box), full on lights and dancing platforms, the scene is set for a bounce-tastic party atmosphere. For those that need a break during the night there is a big outdoor area (complete with Astroturf, seating and even a coffee bar).
We Love Bounce is the coming together of like minded consenting adults who like a bit of donk, love a good old bounce and know how to party. Expect a very up for it atmosphere, a dance-floor full of smiles and a club packed of attitude free clubbers. Earlybird tickets are an amazing £5, available on a first come first served basis exclusively at moreonthedoor.com from 9am Friday 29th May 2009. Once they are gone, advance tickets will be £7, more on the door.
