No sleep for Rachel Auburn

Reported by SunnyAli / Submitted 30-03-10 07:12

Scene leader, producer of undisputed classics, the stuff of hard house legend, the name Rachel Auburn is covered with glory. Now restricting herself to a couple of dates every year each one is more special than the last as old clubbers join her to reminisce and new ravers experience her style for the first time. SunnyAli took a walk down memory lane.

How's things? We've missed you on club lineups in London of late – what have you been up to?

Hi, Im great thanks. I decided I really needed to go in another direction in my life. I had a lot of self reflection and a lot of sorting out to do. I became interested in helping people feel good in another way and learnt how to teach yoga! Believe it or not yoga teaching is similar to DJing in a way!

You've played bounce, hard house, NRG and more over the years – what sort of sounds are you really enjoying playing and listening to at the moment?

I didn’t play bounce or hard house because it was a genre of music I liked. It didn’t really exist that way, when I started first playing! I guess I was really amongst a group of people who originated those sounds! I’m into all types of music but I’m a big sucker for a grand melody and an emotional pure voice - anything that sends shivers down my spine!

We're all dying to see you play at Insomniacz at Magna – are you excited to be playing both bounce and hard house sets there?

I’m so excited to be playing at Magna - I haven't played out in ages (has the scene changed much in the last few years?!).

I like hard house and bounce and I couldn’t choose between the two, both are good for different reasons. I like the intensity of harder edge dance but then I think life's just too short and you just have to be silly! The I also like that uplifting 'smile on your face' euphoric feeling of a happy melody and a sexy bouncy bassline.

Your set in the girls' room is being touted as your return to the hard house circuit – what sort of tunes are you going to play?

For those lucky enough to be there I’m probably going to play a classic hard set, lots of my old stuff and tons of bounce classics.

You're playing alongside fellow former Tidy Girl Lisa Lashes – what was life as a TG like?

Gosh, I didn't really see myself as a Tidy Girl! It was really their fault they made me one! It was just that I was really into the tunes Ammo, Andy and the likes of people like Tony De Vit Paul King Paul Janes etc, were making back then - really cutting edge.dance stuff and I guess we were all on the same vibe.

I am so grateful to Andy and Ammo for putting me in the studio and letting me have my wicked way! So being a Tidy Girl was, is , blooming brilliant! Thanks guys!

Your tracks such as Bass Keeps Pumpin, Screwdriver and Breather – Come On are all stuff of legend in hard house. Have you continued producing lately? If so, what sort of music are you making?

Each track was a classic but lately I haven't felt inspired to make music. I’ve been so out of the loop and my head has been somewhere else!

You've remixed Madonna previously: what pop track would you most like to have a crack at or sample from if you could do today?

Hmm, that’s a difficult one... Something to do with yogic culture, maybe some chanting - Krishna Das. – I think I’d make something really spiritual!

You've played all over the world – which have been the best sets?

I loved playing in China, and Japan and South Africa always was a great place to play.

Which DJ / DJs would you most like to play back to back with and which would you most like to co-produce with, if you could work with any?

I would like to play back to back with Ann Savage and the two Lisas of course as I only ever did that once! On the production side it has to be none other than BK (what a lovely guy!).

What do you miss (or not!) from the clubbing scene now you don't get out every weekend?

I guess I miss the music, the moving energy, the most from not being out on the dance scene and dancing my arse off!

What are the plans for the rest of 2010? Will we be seeing lots more of you?

I’m not playing too many gigs, I want to keep it fresh. My yoga teaching takes up all my week and I really love teaching. As I said in away its similar to playing, you're taking care of the energy in a room and seeing lots of smiling faces at the end!

More: MAGNA - This 2001 Stirling prize-winning science adventure centre, housed in a converted steelworks, cost £45.6m becomes the centre stage in 2010 to showcase the very best in UK Hard House & Hard Dance scene.

Insomniacz, B2T, Neon Glam, Vicious Circle V Hi Oktane & Kiddfectious have teamed up to bring you 5 Arenas of upfront Dance Music..

With Insomniacz's return it would be fair to say the quality has now returned to fill a huge void in the clubbing scene. Insomniacz events are the talk of UK Clubland. We have upped the ante and raised the bar by returning in 2009. 2009 was probably one of the most successful years in our 10 year history although 2010 is set to be even bigger.

April 2009 seen the reunion which was a real sell out. 1600 clubbers attended the 1200 capacity of the Corporation in Sheffield, September seen Insomniacz celebrate our 10th birthday at the O2 Academy and 1200 clubbers attended this. The Insomniacz arena at the Atomik Weekender 2 was packed at 8am on a Sunday morning (when you all should have been asleep), New Years Eve at Fantasy Island saw 2500 clubbers in attendance and then there was the very special New Years Day event with B2T @ Gatecrasher that smashed everyone’s expectations and kicked off what is set to a very special partnership between Insomniacz & B2T. Last but certainly not least Insomniacz finally teams up with Kiddfectious who Present – ‘All Stars Got Talent’. The All Stars room at the recent Kiddfectious v Judgement Sundays event at the Warehouse Project was arguably even more electric than the main room, and was the perfect demonstration of why these lads are the ones to watch for 2010.

Our 2 year plan for UK domination starts at Magna. This first event takes Hard House back to its roots. We also bring Dance Music right up to date with the very successful Kiddfectious who will bring Hardstyle & Hard-Tech to the masses on April 3rd 2010.

The visual/production & planning that’s gone into this will boast the biggest live Laser shows ever witnessed in the UK as well as live Fire Eaters, Grinders, Circus type acts, Dancers & 4 banging sound systems.

This is not your normal run of the mill event at the same old club with the same DJ’s playing. Magna is spectacular and I’m sure you will agree this is the most up front and in your face line up ever seen up North...

Don’t miss out on this – this will be legendry.

It’s now Magna time – we will see this through, no cancelled events for Magna anymore.
